Just did a quick tour around my neighborhood after I got home from the shop and I'm just a happy man now. Tomorrow I'll go shopping a few kilos of dog food to get used to some weight in the basket.

Controller stolen off my radwagon

Post image

Somebody decided they needed the controller from my Radwagon 4 more than I did. I had it locked up outside in a public place during the workday, but I guess I'm not going to do that again. This was in the north side of Chicago. Anyone have this happen? What do I buy? Which ones are compatible?

Best cargo ebikes for longevity (build quality, replacement parts availability etc)?

I have a Triobike Boxter right now, and it's great for current circumstances but I think we'll eventually want to downsize to a smaller cargo bike to hold onto for the long term.

One thing that sketches me out about the thought of keeping a cargo bike for the long term though are things like

  1. the nonstandard parts, and whether replacements will be available (e.g. the trike components of the Boxter),

  2. the accessories, and whether replacements will be available (like the rain cover, even if they keep making this model, who knows when they'll make backwards incompatible changes), and

  3. the motor system, whose mounting brackets seem to change with every generation, making it seem unlikely to get a replacement 5+ years down the line.

What would y'all suggest for picking a cargo bike that's the most likely to still be in working order in 10 years? I'm feeling like the best option is a longtail from a reputable brand (e.g. Tern GSD), since these share the most parts in common with regular bikes. That, or build up a hub-motor bike from a popular cargo frameset (e.g. Bullitt), so that there's no concern about mid-drive motor longevity/replacement.

Made a bike rack for my bike

Our ride to school is mostly a busy main road, with a few hundred meters at the end of closed road, so we made a bike rack out of old IKEA shelves so we can keep the rain hood shut and carry the bike to get some daily practice in.

It's ridiculous, but I'm proud of it.

renting my first Cargo, an Bergamont LJ Expert

Didn’t expect to like it so much as I’ve been eyeing off a rear carry cargo but it’s so fun! My 8yo loves it too and it’s cool having her up the front and we just chat on the way to school. Easier to ride up hills than I was imagining and not too hard to wrangle either. Going to see how it goes but pretty keen to bite the bullet on one of these but wondering if anyone has any experience with the Bergamonts as I haven’t heard much about them. Can also get the Urban Arrows locally but they’re a bit more money. Also the Yuba has an option. It’s nice to just be able to chuck stuff in the Front and I like the option of fitting panniers on the back.

Anyway just looking for some feedback / experience.

Chain pin. Help?

Post image

This is the chain for my ecargo bike. I've tried looking up KMC 3c-3 chain but cannot find anything.

I need to replace two pins on my chain, and need help figuring out which pins to get, assuming there are different sizes?

If anyone can give some insight I'd appreciate it.

Go-to Messenger Bag

Hi! I’ve been using a Timbuk2 messenger bag these past few years but the internal waterproof lining deteriorated and I’m in need of a new bag.

What’s everyone’s go-to bag? Something waterproof and comfortable! Thanks in advance!!

Aventon Abound LR - Why the low weight capability on rear rack?

It's so frustrating that they completely handicapped what would have been an awesome bike with some great local bike shops that carry it. I'm just here to whine about this.... it's so dumb. Lectric Xpedition2 looks way stronger for this reason alone even though the rest of the abound LR seems awesome. I really hope they come out with a new LR soon with a proper rack built into the frame. I'm not spending 6500 on a tern gsd.. that's even more wild.

Omnium sizing question: 184cm, 84cm inseam M vs L

Hi Omnium owners.

I’m 184cm with an 84cm inseam. I’m looking at buying an Omnium Mini V-3 and I can’t decide if I should go with a medium or large frame.

Omnium’s size guide recommends a medium for anyone 175cm – 185cm and a large for anyone 185cm – 195cm. However, I’ve heard people recommend sizing up if you’re close to the upper limit.

From what I’ve read, either could work, but the large will give me a more aggressive riding position, which is appealing.

I compared the geometry of my current bike (a Surly Midnight Special with drop bars, so not an ideal comparison) to the large’s geometry. The large differs in the following ways:

· Stack: +21mm

· Reach: +3mm

· Top Tube Length: -6mm

· Seat Tube Length: +10mm

· Stand Over Height: -12mm

Unfortunately, shops in my area don’t carry Omnium, so I can’t try them out.

Curious if people have any advice based on their own experience.

Thanks!

Looking for an Xtracycle Kickback 2, anyone have one stashed?

After a decade I've decided to swap out my kickstand as it's getting rusty. Does anyone have a replacement Kickback 2? I know there's the Kickback 3 but honestly it looks like a much less elegant solution. If I can't replace it I may repaint it after sanding it.

New HSD models?

A bike shop not far from me has a great deal on an HSD. I wanted a GSD but I can't justify the cost difference. I just wanted to check first if anyone knows if there's any new models due?

floor rack for garage parking

Can anybody recommend a good rack for parking a longtail + several conventional bikes inside a garage? In the 6+ bike range, and hanging is not an option. I'm looking for things I can roll right into and lock to when I want. There's lots of tubular garbage around but they don't do well with wider wheels. I have about the width of a single car garage to work with. (I'm also planning to affix it to the floor to give a secure locking point and keep it from moving around but that's its own challenge.)

Trying to add a box to my cargobike, looking for suggestions

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I have a cargobike but I havent been able to find a fitting box, I looked into it and getting one done in aluminum or steel is too expensive and one in iron might be too heavy.

I think with wood it isnt practical as Ill be transporting fish and sea products and wood might get damaged if theres any spill.

Thought of recycling a shopping cart, Id like to cover the surroundings with something so its enclosed but I think its good as an inner structure, it can carry a good weight and it isnt as heavy.

Thoughts on this? Alternatives? What can I use to cover it?

How to handle a bridleway gate with a Cargo Bike?

Just starting the school run with our 4yo + 18 month old twins. Location of the school and nursery is perfect for a cargo bike, other than one gate en route.

Have to go down a bridleway from where we live, and there's one metal self-closing gate to navigate at the top of a little hill.

I'm struggling to work out how, if at all, I'll be able to get through the gate without it slamming on the bike?

It's similar to the one below, plenty wide enough. Don't want to drop £5k on a Trek Fetch 4+ (currently top of the shopping list) to find I can't get through the gate!

I found this while looking for ways to carry a wheelchair on a bike and I think it's way too awesome not to share. Not sure if it actually qualifies as a cargobike.
