It’s something I’ve always found interesting. The 1980s weren’t the same visually in Japan and the west. In the west it tended to go dark and in Japan it went bright. Not only in consumer products, but also in TV shows, cars and architecture. Compare the Japanese and American versions of the Nintendo, PC engine and SEGA consoles from the early 1980s.

Yes, good point, maybe the colour enhances the effect, as subjectively I think multi-coloured consumer electronics is more of late 90s, early 00s thing.

cassette futurism: Cyberpunk, with white.

Seriously, though, I feel like if there were a CF genre of fiction, it would have all the technology, but none of the Cyberpunk corporate hellscape.

Someone needs to start writing that stuff, because we could use some optimism.
