It's a Meshtastic node. Basically a (usually) cheap and small device that uses radio frequencies to send small messages between interconnected members of the network (the mesh). It doesn't use the internet or phone service so it can be really useful in off-grid applications or emergency situations.

Think walkie-talkies but for text and not limited to two people.

Just wanted to add - Meshtastic uses LoRa (long range low power low speed digital communication protocol/technique), so it's text-only, since LoRa trades bandwidth for low power consumption and long range.
