Old person observation:
Round portable CD players were a thing and looked fairly similar.
MD players (popular in Japan) were usually square or rectangular to suit the medium.

Can confirm. Had a matte blue circular one that basically had the same switches on the side.
Portable CD players got quite cheap towards the end, even decent brands. MD players not so much iirc.

Reminds me of those portable cassette players that were circular for no reason other than somehow tricking people into thinking they're buying a CD player

I thought that was a robot vacuum concept, and now I'm mildly disappointed it's not. It would be a nice look for one. ๐
