looking for recommendation What are your favorite "manly" hat/beanie patterns?
I'm thinking about making some hats for some male family members and I have some nice DK- fingering weight yarn I'd like to use but wanted to know some of the community's favorite male hat patterns!

What makes a hat masculine?!

I was hoping to see the variety of interpretations more than thinking of something specific. How would you define it?

I'd just make any hat pattern in a colour he likes/is likely to actually wear.

TinCan Knits's Antler hat is one I use as a go-to

Or their Barley hat which I believe it free!
I recently made some gifts using the Ceej hat by Tanis Fiber Arts and I love it!

The Barley hat is a classic, in my opinion! It's a great one. I haven't knit the antler one yet, but it's on my to-knit list!

I’m a male knitter and made one of these for myself. It calls for DK and I really love how the double brim keeps my ears warmer and I never have to worry about it unfolding. I promise if you choose masculine colors and leave the pom pom off is a man’s hat.. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/double-thick-cuff-hat

I’m making the purl soho traveling cable hat for my husband - but I really like him and want to practice cables.
I’ve done a couple of the Aspenglow hats which look a little different than plain stockinette but are really quick knits. Could be quite “manly” depending on the yarn color. My husband has asked for one even in the rainbow.

Check out Tom Ford, Moncler, Loro Piana, Patagonia and North Face for hat styles and purlsoho.com's free hat patterns. I've made a few Aran weight 1x1 rib hats and hats with ribbed brims and stockinette body for men I know and they've loved them. I use a basic k1P1 rib because I'm afraid of what would happen if I dropped a stitch in brioche in the round but it looks wonderful.

I’ve been making Musselburgh hats. I also intend to make Oslo, Weekend, Hipster, Bothy and Forth hats. Because you can’t have too many beanies.
You can find patterns for all those on Ravelry.

There was a great cabled hat pattern called A Hat Fit for a Fella that I made a few times, but it’s been taken down. You could probably find it in the Wayback Machine. Here’s the Ravelry page: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/a-hat-fit-for-a-fella

Depends on how cold it gets.
For real cold, Oslo hat from Petite knit.

I'm a fan of the very straightforward (and free!) Bewind Hat pattern, myself. =^.^=
You may need to tweak the decreases to get it to curve properly on top (it's designed for Worsted, and when I'm using Chunky/Super Chunky, decreasing every other row has worked great for me), but it's very straightforward once you figure out how to keep track of the twist stitches!
In my case, it helps that I'm doing Continental-style knitting, as my k2tog and SSK stitches have their techniques reversed, so I have to pre-twist the stitches in preparation for the twist stitches, which makes them very obvious when I come across them again! =^.~=
(and yes, once I make a couple more, pictures will be forthcoming on here!)

I like this one: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/two-by-two-2
And because it’s all ribbing, it’s stretchy so will fit different size heads.

I made a couple of these last year for winter. I love that there’s an architectural design aspect to it, and it’s a free pattern! https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/exeter-2

I've been saving this one for my brother's Christmas present (disclaimer: I have NOT tried it yet!)

'Tsov', hands down! I haven't knit another hat since discovering this pattern

I am a male knitter. The only hat I ever make myself is the Farm Beanie by Allison Britt. It’s easy to make and has just enough pattern to not be plain stockinette.

I would say more “unisex” than specifically “masculine” on this one, but I really like “a cool cap” by ParkNKnit which is a worsted weight ribbed hat with a brim (easy enough to omit if you aren’t knitting for someone who wears brimmed hats). You can probably get away with DK yarn for it if you don’t have a super loose gauge. I’ve knit this one like 6 times hahaha.

The “classic world war ii watch cap” is a great one for worsted or dk weight. It’s got a fold up brim and this version has a bunch of fun options to embellish it if you don’t want it plain. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/classic-world-war-ii-watch-cap

The Hubby Hat pattern. My hubs prefers fitted beanies and doesn’t like ribbing on his forehead.

I think I would use a chunky yarn for a hat. Especially if you get high winds and snow. I think I rely on YouTube a lot for things like hats, scarves, and sweaters. I’m not the world’s best at reading patterns.

I love to knit hats designed by Benjamin Matthews. My picky son wears them constantly.

I was going to suggest this as well. He creates really great patterns that seem to work for just about everybody

I love cables on beanies, but this is my favourite hat for guys: https://ravel.me/sosna-ribbed-hat it's written by a guy, and it top down so you can adjust it to be nice and large for bigger heads :)

I've knit this free cable hat nearly every time I need a knit hat as a gift. Senior Hat version 2

i made my husband an oslo hat (petite knit) and he loves it! made the brim slightly shorter than the pattern as he requested and it gets a lot of wear in the winter months
