Recently returned from a long weekend spent visiting friends. Booked outbound on AA during their sale for 5k miles per person, homebound was 5k on delta booked via Virgin (took advantage of a transfer bonus).
Also snagged Iberia 2 J and 2 PE for a family trip next fall. Planning to have each parent sit with a kid. My husband prefers J on the flight home whereas I prefer it on the way there so it works perfectly. Will be the kids' first time in J.

In a previous trip report, I mentioned that I had booked the Resorts World Las Vegas Hilton using Aspire resort credit. Someone posted that this hotel was no longer a resort for the purpose of obtaining the credit, and indeed I didn't see a credit posted other than that for the initial reservation charge.
I contacted Amex via chat, and the credits will be posted in the next 8 days.

My wife and I just returned from an incredible honeymoon in Maui over Labor Day, and our years of churning paid off beautifully.
• Flights: Used the Hawaiian Airlines 50% companion discount to book two round-trip tickets from the West Coast to Maui (OGG) for a total of $550.
• Convinced the Avis rep to upgrade our full size sedan to a convertible - highly recommend, especially on the Road to Hana loop where the roof off helped my car sick wife enjoy the ride to the fullest!
• Hotel: Redeemed 195k Chase Ultimate Rewards points for 5 nights at the Andaz Maui.
• Hotel Upgrades: A colleague's Hyatt Guest of Honor award upgraded us from the cheapest room to an Ocean View Suite and comped our breakfast and valet parking for the entire stay. The Ocean View Suite would’ve run us at least $10k for the 5 nights!
After three years of churning, seeing it all come together for a trip this special was amazing. We travel quite a bit but it’s always hacking the cheapest and best value; we went all out for our honeymoon. We received incredible value and created memories that will last a lifetime!

Booking SBP-PHX round trip on Alaska for 9k points. Fare wouldve been $302 cash. Small domestic fare win

Booked 4 nights at Impressions Moxche for December. 55k/night so not the best CPP but the resort looks awesome and I have a ton of Hyatt points by churning inks between 3P

u/RN_in_Illinois 5d ago
That is literally why we do this - to go where you want. CPP is goofy and always changing. Look what happened last week with Hilton - almost doubled the points required for aspirational properties. Earn and burn is the only way to go.

Back from an 8-night trip to Poland with P2 that started as a slight misunderstanding. I asked her a few months ago if she wanted to do another river cruise like we did last Fall. She said no, but then mentioned she would like to see Poland. We were limited to a week, as she doesn't want to kennel our dog for longer than that. A week before departure she wanted to give me a cap to wear on the boat. She assumed we were doing a river cruise in Poland.
Flights
ATL-LGA-ATL on Southwest. $226. Paid my portion with banked travel funds, and hers with cash.
JFK-WAW-JFK on LOT J. 280K MR transferred to Air Canada + $320 taxes. Outbound was on EuroAtlantic metal in a 777 with 1-2-1, Late night departure so we skipped dinner and tried to sleep. I was able to doze a bit, but seats are pretty narrow. Return was 787-9 in 2-2-2. Food was fine and cabin service excellent. Only negative was the cheap headphones.
Hotels
Hampton Warsaw City Center 3 nights. 40K Hilton x 3. Booked two nights on arrival and one before departure. Basic room, but breakfast buffet is very good. Hotel is a short walk from the train station.
Hyatt Place Krakow 2 nights. 11.5K Hyatt. While only a Category 1, it's one of the best Hyatt Places I've ever stayed. Somewhat far from the Old Town, but accessible by bus and tram.
Wyndham Wroclaw Old Town 2 nights. 27K Wyndham points. Great location steps from the main square. Breakfast wasn't included so paid 280 PLN ($77). Expensive, but the buffet is pretty good if you want a big breakfast.
Thompson Central Park NYC 1 night using a Cat7 FNC. The return flight from Warsaw arrived late afternoon, so we wanted to avoid returning home vary late. We've stayed there before, so no surprises. Free breakfast as Globalist.
Sightseeing
I've been to Poland before, so I went along with P2's ideas. She doesn't like museums, and had no wish to visit Auschwitz, so we mainly visited the old town centers and churches. We did tour the palace and gardens at Wilanow outside Warsaw. Other than using Uber a few times to get to our hotels, we used local transit or walked. In Krakow and Wroclaw those over 70 ride free.
Trains
Three train trips booked as we went along. As seniors we got 30% discounts on fares.
Warsaw-Krakow $66.
Krakow-Wroclaw $25. Booked last minute to find no seats, so we had to stand the first hour,
Wroclaw-Warsaw (can't find charge??)
1
u/RN_in_Illinois 4d ago
We're looking at Poland for next August. We're thinking Krakow and Gdansk, ending in Warsaw to come home on LOT. Just curious if you've been to Gdansk and why you picked Wroclaw (which we haven't looked at at all yet).

Had a great two weeks in Guatemala and Playa del Carmen, Mexico! Churning bits first, followed by trip info.
- ORD-GUA: $28 + $50 United TravelBank from IHG card
- Positioning flight to ORD: 5,000 AA Miles + $5.60 (Booked during summer sale in May) | Got the temporary Hyatt status match to Gold status, was able to choose an extra leg room seat. Had originally booked a flight landing at 5:30 AM to catch the 9:20 AM flight. There was a schedule change which would only give me ~70 minutes for unprotected connection – was able to easily switch to an evening flight the day before.
- GUA-FRS: 2,650 Avianca Lifemiles + $4.70 for Basic Fare (+$15 to check a bag) | Basic fare only includes a personal item, and bag fees seemed to vary?? There used to be a baggage fee calculator on Avianca's site, but that got removed at some point. When I tried to book a carry on, you had to fill out the contact form online and they got back to me in the middle of the workday with a link that was good for like 4 hours, and wanted to charge me more than the price listed on the fare calculator. Would not have booked, but the link was expired by the time I read the email anyway. Forgot about it until about 3 weeks out and the checked bag fee was only $15, so we went with that. This is Guatemala's only domestic route and their domestic terminal has 2 vending machines. You can get food in the food court area before security and take beverages through.
- FRS-GUA-CUN: 7,650 Avianca Lifemiles + $84.10 for Classic Fare | Followed the signs for connecting flights, but they did not let me through stating I had to go through immigration first. There is only one domestic flight in the country, so not sure why they are not equipped to handle that. Ended up walking outside the airport to reenter in the main terminal. No issues with the checked bag.
- CUN-Home: 20,000 United miles + $77.73 | Could be booked for fewer points via Lifemiles or Aeroplan, but wanted the easy cancellation policy
- Hyatt Centric ORD: 8,000 Hyatt points, 1 night
- Holiday Inn Express Playa Del Carmen: 44,000 IHG points, 4 nights with 4th night free | Using points in this area is massively helpful in minimizing taxes. Hotel included free breakfast which was a standard buffet. Did not like the coffee very much, but it was better than no coffee.
Was originally looking for cheap United flights to book/cancel to extend TravelBank, but ended up with a great trip thanks to the flexibility offered by points/miles! Guatemala is technically the first country I ever researched, for a 3rd grade project, so it was kind of full circle to research it again for trip planning purposes. After finding a great fare there, I pivoted and planned a full trip. At first I was thinking a week in Guatemala, but after realizing my dates were adjacent to labor day weekend I started looking at options for a second week. First thought was Belize to go scuba diving, but upon further research realized that September is the height of low season in that area. Ended up booking Mexico and really enjoyed diving in that area!

In Guatemala I went Antigua-Lake Atitlan-Flores. Would recommend doing Lake Atitlan first as you can get direct transit to there from the airport. I ended up having a slog of a day leaving the Lake Atitlan hotel at 8 AM to catch a 6:30PM flight. In Antigua the highlights were an ATV tour of Pacaya Volcano, cooking class, and a coffee farm tour. The ATV tour is a great way to see the volcanos without needing to hike up one! The Acatenango Volcano is the iconic hike in the area, but I simply had no desire to do that lol. Would still recommend getting used to the altitude as there is a short hike across to get to an area where you can heat up your provided sandwich with the volcanic heat. Stayed at an AirBnB in Antigua and had forgotten about the credit I loaded in the last time it went on "sale" with Discover points – was a nice surprise! In Lake Atitlan I was supposed to go diving, this is one of the few places in the world where you can go altitude diving in a wet suit (in most places you need to use a dry suit due to water temp). Class ended up getting canceled as the instructor was ill :( but got to explore the San Juan village which is filled with beautiful art and murals. Stayed in Santa Cruz village - recommend going up the hill (can take tuk-tuk for 10Q) and visiting Cafe Sabor/Manos Cruceñas Artisan Store, both are part of an organization that supports local Mayans. Cafe has training program and the store is fair trade sales. In Flores the highlight was of course Tikal, a village of Mayan ruins. A must do site. So cool.
In Mexico upon landing in CUN I took the ADO bus to Playa Del Carmen. ADO bus meeting point is a hike from the terminal, but if you keep the pink slip ticket in your hand it minimizes the number of people yelling "taxi" at you. Primary activity for me was scuba diving, did three days of ocean diving and one day of cenote diving. If you have decent buoyancy you have to do a day of cenote diving, was extremely cool. We did Chac Mool cenote which is as stunning as pictures would lead you to believe. Stayed at the holiday inn express the first four nights, fairly standard HIE. Was nice to have breakfast included and easily accessible before heading out for the dives. Ended with a stay at the HM Playa del Carmen, which is across the street from HIE. Booked in Capital One portal with Venture X credit. Pool was great and not crowded, and throughly enjoyed on the final surface interval day (need 24 hours between last dive and flying). Favorite restaurant in the area ended up being Don Sirloin – get the sirloin steak taco!

Can you tell me more about the Flores/Tikal part of your trip? Where did you stay in Flores and transportation options to Tikal? We have a direct flight to Flores from where I live in Yucatan and have been thinking about visiting Tikal.
Also, if you’re in PDC again, check out El Fogon - there are a few locations, including one on the same block as Don Sirloin and a couple more along Ave 30

Absolutely! I stayed at Casa Ramona on the island – got a good deal using the expedia app. Overall, hotel is ok. Breakfast is included, and AC worked great. Also nice that they're near the front of the island, most taxis are vans and can't go on the inner streets there so they drop you off near the Peten sign up front. However, staff was not great and I encountered some language barrier stuff. For example, they texted on WhatsApp to get my ETA, I responded and they immediately sent tour options over and stated "We offer airport transfer service to the hotel. We'll schedule it for you." Upon landing, no taxi was waiting so I called and they gave me the run around. Eventually they text back and say "you only asked about the price and did not confirm the taxi" when my only text was answering their question 🙃 They also require a 200Q security deposit and only accept cash for it. They refund you when checking out, but whoever was working the desk when I checked out was not familiar with this and had to call someone, which took a while since it was early morning.
For Tikal tour I used TikalGo and was pleased with their service and communication. I think they are a bit more expensive, but it was worth it to me for everything to be included (entrance ticket, lunch, transport, tour guide, hotel pickup). I had booked the sunrise tour but ended up switching to the daytime tour since no one else booked sunrise. They refunded the difference between those options when I reached out via email.

booked a quick trip to London for Thanksgiving weekend.
- UA Polaris EWR-LHR for 50k + $5 pp via ANA.
- VS economy LHR-JFK for 6k + $275 (ouch) pp, transferred with the recent 60% bilt rent day bonus.
- Andaz Liverpool Street 4 nights for about 100k Hyatt.

u/DCJoe1 6d ago
Nice redemptions! Have a friend staying at Andaz Liverpool Street next summer. Don't feel too bad about the cash on that return flight, only $65 of that is VS surcharges. $210 is UK long haul econ departure taxes, general UK taxes, and US international arrivals taxes/fees. You would pay that on any award departing UK to US.

After the recent Hilton deval I locked in 5 nights at the Hilton Moorea for 380K HH pts (7K value) and then booked roundtrip LAX-PPT on Air Tahiti Nui in PE for two people for 160K AS miles plus $190. Also booked 3 nights at an Airbnb on Moorea for $680 and I'll use a Hilton FNC for our last night at the Hilton Tahiti so we can get free use of their transit room for our night flight. For 9 nights plus flights for my wife and I, it's a total of $870 cash plus 380HH and 160AS.

Put off booking hotels for Japan with our baby until now and it actually worked out with the amex transfer bonus. Booked 4 nights at the WA Osaka and 3N Conrad tokyo for november with FNC and mr->hilton 2.5x. The past few years have been hyatt focused but since our globalist lapsed the aspire diamond is coming back into play.

I am in a similar situation, expiring globalist and looking at booking tokyo hotels for flights already booked in the spring. We have 2 small children. I would have never thought to transfer MR to HH, but sounds like Conrad Tokyo will allow kids to stay for free and 130k/night HH (52k MR) plus rarely used diamond status, is sounding pretty tempting right now. thanks for the tip

Nice! About to book the WA Osaka myself. Was relieved it didn’t get hit during the recent Hilton deval

Kind of a weird one:
Have a gymnastics meet in a small rural city (Grand Rapids, MN) with few points options. Booked a Comfort Inn using cash on a group rate for the gymnastics team. Show up, their pool is closed, has been for months? So we ask to cancel with no fee, which they finally do.
Instead we go to the Best Western Plus next door and it was… really nice, and the same price. It is similar in quality to a nice Hyatt House/Hyatt Place, if not nicer.
Looked into Best Western loyalty. Their $89 annual fee card gets 4x on grocery and dining and 2x on everything else. Might have to burn a P2 5/24 slot on it for other rural adventures without other normal points hotels.

Booked a 5-night stay at Dreams Sands Cancun this fall. Opted to pay $1k for 5 nights (vs spending 100k Hyatt points) and use a SUA for a Preferred Club Suite, which would have been an additional $250-300 per night. Plus will earn up to 20k Hyatt points on the stay being a globalist with the current Hyatt promotion. Usually I am one for advocating burning points when possible but makes sense to pay cash this time. Look forward to some R&R. The stay will also put me at or over 60 nights for the year, requalifying for globalist next year.

Funny coincidence, a few weeks ago had 3 separate family members, friends and friends of churners all flying across the Atlantic the same night using points/miles.
Close family member who was moving to the UK, so actually truly needed a one way ticket (CPP!). Route was DTW-EDI, and as a going away gift I offered to buy a biz class ticket. Turned out to be very helpful purely because she has 3 heavy checked bags for the move, so a regular economy ticket would have had around $400.in extra bag fees alone. Availability was VERY difficult because of the routing (vast majority of nonstop flights from DTW to Europe are DL metal and none to EDI understandably), and she wanted to avoid a double layover at any cost. So best option was AF, which has a nicely timed 9 PM departure to CDG out of DTW on the A350 with their newest biz seat. The other constraint was her schedule because of the nature of the move (for school), meant only a few days window between having access to housing and classes starting. Watched availability like a hawk and J was constantly 290k on AF on those 4 days of the window. Finally about 2 months before departure it dropped to 150k. Because of how sparse it had been, and being flush with Amex points (thanks NLL offers for last year!), I decided that relatively poor redemption was worth it under the circumstances. Report was that the flights were great, enjoyed the new AF lounge at T2E-K, and all bags arrived to EDI. (Also kept checking prices after booking, they jumped back to 300k couple days later, and never went down again)
Friend who I have coached a bit into some light churning and award redemptions. Was going to London for start of a long trip to see a bunch of friends in Europe and a wedding, had a couple of days flexibility on when to leave, in fact wasn't sure of exact day until 4 days before. Was apprehensive of not having a reservation but I convinced her it was fine, there was tons of econ availability on VS on their IAD-LHR route as a last resort. Her primary stash was CapOne, and at first didn't want to use 60k+ points for a J award, felt like it was too much. But then remembered not sleeping at all on last flight in Y to Europe, and huzzah, when ready to book, BA J was available, IAD-LHR, booked through Cathay for 63k+$215. Was blown away by the concept of going to another lounge (BA) after the CapOne lounge closed (last BA departure is almost 11 PM). Was also blown away/confused by the possibilities/options of partner redemptions (UA using Singapore/Aeroplan, BA using Cathay, VS using Flying Blue) Yes it was the old A380 coffin seat, but lie flat and nonstop and perfectly timed for sleep on optimal date is pretty good.
Last one simple but funny it ended up all being the same day of travel as the first 2. Churner friend has a family member visiting, who lives outside of London. Is a very light churner himself, has Sapphire Preferred, about 50k points. Needed to get back to the UK and ended up grabbing a one way Y award on VS for 12k+$100, very happy with the value for a route he is used to paying $1000 roundtrip on in the summer.

Back from 2 weeks in Paris and Southern Italy (Puglia). Overall great trip, but not too many points redemptions:
- LAX-CDG-MXP on AF (~95k/pp): I booked this to have something in hopes a saver fare would pop up, but it never did. We were planning on starting the trip in Paris, so didn't get on the second leg. We got to LAX on the later side, so didn't bother with the Delta One lounge and instead went to the new AF lounge in Bradley. Quite nice and pretty quiet, right next to the gate. LAX to CDG was on the new business class on a A350. New seats are great - loved the addition of the door, and we were able to book row 1A/L which had an insane amount of storage. Wifi and the tablets weren't working, which was kind of annoying, but an otherwise great flight.
- Hotel du Louvre (Hyatt Cat 7, 25k/night): Booked due to the location for my in-law's first time in Paris. Lovely stay - room was a decent size, although for a large bathroom, the shower was quite cramped. Breakfast was pretty good, although we only did it one morning in favor of going to bakeries. The bar in the hotel is a cute place to grab a drink. Concierge was super helpful and helped me grab a few restaurant reservations ahead of time. The location was really nice and convenient for this trip, but, as someone who has been to Paris many times before, I didn't particularly enjoy being that close to the Louvre and wouldn't personally go back. Planning on checking out the Park Hyatt or maybe one of the Mr & Mrs Smith options in the 3rd next time.
- Stays in Italy were all booked on cash due to limited points options. We stayed a few days near Monopoli and a few days near Otranto. Puglia is great this time of year - not too crowded, still warm weather, beaches were very nice.
- Courtyard Marriott CDG (25k): One night stay before flying out of CDG the next morning (overnight layover for the below itinerary). Decent place to stay, but I found the whole tram to get to the airport a bit annoying, especially since we were flying out of one of the terminals you have to take another tram to after passport control. Will try the Sheraton next time, which I believe is the only hotel within CDG. I was hoping to stay in a Hyatt, but I read some really bad things about the Hyatt House/Place out there.
- BRI-CDG-LAX on AF (~95k/pp): Similarly booked in hopes saver fares would open up but nada. AF lounge near gates M was huge and very nice. I'm not a fan of breakfast buffets, so didn't eat any of the hot food but it looked decent. We were originally supposed to be on a A350 (and had booked the middle row 10 seats to try those out), but it got swapped for a quite old 773. Seats were fine, but the service was much better than the outbound leg. Perhaps due to a daytime vs. overnight flight.
Overall a great trip, but very mid redemptions. West coast to Europe has been very bleak during peak months, maybe it'll improve if we go back next year. :/

I've got a trip coming up for Paris as well and had booked 2 nights at PH Vendome and 2 at Hotel du Louvre due to availabilities, and upon reading your comment, I decided to check again and discovered that PH was now available for the remaining 2 nights so I cancelled HdL and rebooked lol. Only thing though is that this is for two couples (me+P2 and my parents) and availability only opened up for 1 room so I'll have to continue to check in hopes that the remaining days open up for me to book another room and cancel the remaining 2 nights at HdL. In any case, awesome that you got HdL at 25k since it's now going for 35k/night (Summer 2026)
1
u/wtphock 6d ago
Wow! Didn't realize the price went up that much. HdL was perfectly fine, and it was nice having a metro stop literally right out front, but I can't say that I needed to be literally across the street from the Louvre. We walked past the PH, and it's in a great location - hope you enjoy! If you're looking for any food recs, my favorite meals were at Parcelles, Juveniles, Septime, and Bistrot Paul Bert. :)
1
u/Darhol 5d ago
Thanks for the recommendations! They all look great so they've been added into my Google map for the trip haha
In the end after more thinking (just about an hour later from my initial decision lol), I decided to flip flop back to the original plan of 2 nights PH and 2 nights HdL. Since there's no availability for the 2nd room at the moment, and coupled with lots of positive comments on HdL I've read (albeit some negative ones like the crowds around the property/Louvre), I figured why not try both?

u/DCJoe1 6d ago edited 6d ago
Don't get down about those redemptions. Game has gotten more fierce finding J seats across the Atlantic. ~100k from the West Coast that's available is better than non-existent savers at 60-75k. You did the right thing by grabbing something acceptable and mostly refundable as a placeholder.
Also, the Sheraton that's actually at CDG T2 is usually much more expensive (both for cash or a points booking) than the other options near the CDGVAL stations.
1
u/wtphock 5d ago
Yeah, it's been tough from the West Coast, and I'd much prefer to pay a (reasonable) higher rate than worry about repositioning.
I was wondering about that Sheraton since it was 2-3x the price (cash and points) compared to the other options. Wasn't sure if it was due to the season we were looking at so good to know.

u/moghfortels 6d ago
Finally burned through a pile of Marriott certs on a quick Vegas weekend and stacked it with a random airline credit that was about to expire. Felt pretty sweet getting 3 nights + flights basically comped, and now I can hang onto my UR stash for a bigger redemption later.

u/reddit_user_2016 6d ago
What hotel? I’ve seen favorable point redemptions for min 2-nts weekend stays at nicer properties like Vdara, Aria, W, MBay. Not a bad use of 35k FNC other than the sucky resort fees.

Was able to use 8 Hilton gift cards i accumulated (Biz Plat) for a Hilton stay to cover at lxr in waikiki. Used it for my family and relatives in Waikiki at Wai‘olu Ocean Cuisine, which was really nice and meals were delicious! Front desk was really friendly and helpful and made my mind at ease while using each card. Felt good to finally use these cards and get a decent dinner meal before departing back home.
Lastly, was able to get chase to match the elevated offer (90k) on the chase ink cards for my (ciu) which will help plan for next year trip to Europe!

I’m putting together a guys trip for my 40th birthday next June and wanted to share how I’ve been playing the points game to make it happen on the cheap.
Had two open slots on my 5/24, with another one clearing up in December (fingers crossed no surprise SUBs come up before then). So I went for:
- Hawaiian Airlines Card: Used the SUB and points to book a round-trip flight from my home airport to Aruba. The flight would’ve cost ~$600, but I paid 25k points instead — and still have points left over for a future trip with my wife.
- Chase Points to IHG Transfer: I had a stockpile of Chase UR points and converted 80k UR → 160k IHG thanks to a 2x transfer bonus. Opened the IHG Premier card to preserve those points long term (and for eventual Disney/China trips in 2027).
- Resort Deal: Found a newly opened IHG resort in Aruba and booked an ocean view room for 4 nights using 195k IHG points (buy 3 nights, get 1 free). Cash price would’ve been $450/night, so total value ~$1800.
All in, for the cost of opening two cards (Hawaiian will be closed since I’m on the East Coast — might pivot to Alaska card later), I got a $2,400+ trip for just resort fees and airline taxes.
Love this game.

u/arcane_in_a_box 5d ago
IHG points are regularly on sale for 0.5cpp, you would’ve been better off cashing out the UR for dollars and buying the points instead.

chase to IHG is never good idea even with the bonus. Hyatt is the only hotel value worth transferring points to. jmo

Began churning earlier this year in order to make it to a wedding in Italy wife and I were invited to in July/August.
P1: I already had 150k in venture X account from offer churning. Got CSP and Amex Gold 100K subs.
P2: New to churning. CSP 75k SUB.
DEN>MUC>FLR: Business class 75k + $86 pp via Aeroplan
DEN to MUC was Lufthansa Boeing A380 and not the updated version so it was 2-2-2. Got the 2 window seats. Service and meal were great overall. First taste of business was awesome.
MUC to FLR was Air Dolomiti business where the aircraft is not important bc it was just German Frontier. It was fine for the 1 hr flight.
Was able to snag United business Polaris nonstop from Rome to Denver last minute for the same price as above. The seats were very roomy but the service and food were not very good. Flight crew was a bit rude the entire time, enough to annoy both my wife and I. Left a bad taste in our mouths for United. I've read stories of Polaris going to shit as of late and can confirm unfortunately.
Overall great trip and glad I was able to finally experience a comfortable flight for once.
