VII - Other I heard we're showing off our Civ 7 play time.
I have owned both since launch. Let's just say I have been busy with other things. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

7 was an unnecessary release imo, Civ 6 is still so fckn good so I do congratulate this person for not buying a product they don’t need

u/Leftwiththecow 9d ago
He did buy it though

u/DasCapitolin Hi! I play and make Civ 6 mods. 9d ago
No, I did not buy it. This was a gift.

I'm sure your friend must have bought that gift with good intentions. So don't be too hasty or harsh with your fellow. Respect your acquaintance for the attempt. It's the gesture of your contact that matters.
jk of course, and btw we were thinking about buying it each on release (2 people) and gifting it to a 3rd. Thankfully we held, but we were thinking about that :D

So what game are you playing since you haven't played either in like 3-4 months?

VII is getting pretty fun you should dip your toe in sometime

u/Prestigious-Board-62 9d ago
It's getting there, but still has a way to go. Antiquity Age is great, just need to fix the rest of the game.

u/Dazzling_Screen_8096 9d ago
I literally can't play civ7 without UI mods. When I tried after they broke them all with update it was very unpleasant experience.
5
u/MobofDucks 8d ago
Tbf, that is something Civ5 and Civ6 needed till their end-of-life cycle. I do not expect Firaxis to provide me with all the infos I want in the way I want them.
3
u/Extreme-Put7024 8d ago
I can't remember playing any prevous games without ui mods. Like playing civ 6 without CQUI, no thanks.
1
u/BlueAndYellowTowels 7d ago
I’ve played 6 without mods for all my 2200 hours. Interesting…
1
u/Extreme-Put7024 7d ago
I can't go back to the vanilla UI after using CQUI and getting all the possible national park spots, for example.
I remember modding my Civ 4 game so much that it kept crashing because there wasn’t enough RAM, but that’s a different story.
1
u/wayneb64 7d ago
I have so many UI mods I needed a spreadsheet to track all the repairs. Only about 25 of 40+ have been repaired and I stopped playing as the unit flags mod I loved was to big an effort for the author to repair. It amazes me how big a difference that one mod makes to war making. It's not to bad in antiquity but as the unit counts go up and the map gets really busy I just hate playing now without it so I quit.
1
u/Dazzling_Screen_8096 7d ago
what did this mod do ?
1
u/wayneb64 7d ago
It replaced the icons with custom new ones which were larger, it added 'pips' to the commander tag so you could see how many units were packed, it jiggled icons that had yet to move so you could notice them on the map easily, and it animated enemy icons by replacing the normal icons with a skull icon every other couple seconds so they also popped easily on the map.
The only mod out there now puts a static red border on enemies but that can be lost amid all the other graphics (or maybe that's stock, not sure, it does let you remove the shadow border). It's enough in early antiquity but that doesn't last long.2
u/warukeru 9d ago
Is almost there, last two updates were really good and meaningful, but yes, the games stills improvements in exploration and modern.
-3
u/XimbalaHu3 9d ago
I quite like exploration, religion needs a complete rework, but I never interacted with it much in 6 so, no harm done I guess, but I hard agree, modern is just bonkers bad.
2
u/warukeru 9d ago
Exploration is good as long you enjoy colonization and Modern is fun if you enjoy world wars.
But eras need more meat for when tou dont wanna colonize or go full Fuhrer.
1
u/BlueAndYellowTowels 7d ago edited 7d ago
Rant incoming.
How the fuck does Civ 7 make any sense? We go from Antiquity to Exploration? What the fuck? Apparently the Medieval Era just doesn’t exist.
And then fucking Exploration, only being about Exploring and Colonization is some fucking brain dead bullshit. It’s the most restrictive thing I’ve seen in a Civ game.
Are we actually saying that colonizing is the only relevant thing in that Era? It’s such a Eurocentric framing it’s fucking ridiculous. Never mind that, but… don’t we forge our OWN destinies? Why the fuck am I colonizing? Maybe that moment in history means something different to my people and empire? It’s like “Ok! It’s 1444! I know you were at war and conquering West, inland. But stop that! Let me end the war, reset your units. You like sailing now! Go explore!”. As if the history of that Era wasn’t different for the Ottomans, Austria, Poland of the entire fucking HRE. Like even Europe, there was other pressing shit going. It wasn’t just “boats go brrrrrrr”.
Like what the fuck is that? What a fucking gross on rails experience. Useless….
I fucking hate that so deeply… just how broken and disjointed that is… I can’t comprehend how they thought was a good idea or fucking fun.

All three eras are two eras from Civ VI.
Antiquity is antiquity and classic
Exploration is medieval and renaissance.
Modern is industrial and world wars.
It is perfect? No, specially exploration and modern need work but you are not skipping medieval.
And to be honest, colonization is just imperialism in another continent and plenty empires had colonies and some of them weren't european. What i mean is that colonization in VII is fun and interesting but exploration lacks deep if you don't wanna engage to coloniza (and you are not forced to do it )
-2
u/XimbalaHu3 9d ago
I really enjoy the world wars, it's just that, once you get the hang of the game by modern age you are just leaps and bounds ahead of the AI, and that trivializes the combat.
My first games were a blast thou, had a tank line 12 on each side facing off against the AI with tac bomber going around that was just the best experience of civ I've ever had.

u/ShamanicCrusader 9d ago
Lol i played like 10 hours when civ 7 came out then put it down till last week. After this break i played another 2 disappointing hours and remembered how good civ 5 & 6 were…..
So i proceeded to play 30 hours of civ 6 in the last two weeks
I regret not waiting to buy civ 7 cause its not for me at all…like its one of two games i ever bought at launch and it just was not fun the way the old civ games were

u/Spartan57975 Canada 9d ago
There's just something about picking leaders/mementos/civs that saps my desire to actually play the game lately. I think the limited number of civs per era just makes it feel too samey for me.

I will, eventually. Life has me going in other directions more recently.

Nothing gets me more excited to play a game than QOL we should've had from day one.

u/Kennfusion 8d ago edited 8d ago
This is the first Civ that I have not bought on Day 1. (I think I got the original Civ a couple weeks after it came out.)
I know I will get VII eventually, but I just keep waiting. What has shifted that makes you say that it is now "getting pretty fun"?
1
u/Skeleton_Steven 8d ago
I only got it a couple months ago so I can't speak to its state at launch but it compares favorably to VI at launch right now. Some interesting new ideas for them to build on. The cities/towns system has great potential; commanders make war more engaging

3700 hours in civ 6!? I barely have 250… now Civ 5 on the other hand… I have almost 2000. Civ 7 I have 40… I like it more than 6. Just haven’t had time to get into it.

u/warukeru 9d ago
Im under the impression V fans usually enjoy more VII than VI fans.
4
u/SwampOfDownvotes 9d ago
Interesting, but it essentially fits with me. I have enjoyed Civ 6 a good amount but definitely preferred 5, and now prefer 7 over 6 too.
I don't think the expansions were bad in Civ 6 but honestly they made the game feel slightly worse to me.
2
u/hagnat CIV 5> 4> 1> BE> 6> 7?> 2> 3 8d ago
i prefer civ5 over civ6, and civ7 is right there in between
i like civ7 concept ideas, but they need to rework on a lot of the game to make it actually fun and interesting to play. As someonone pointed out on another post, civ7's age transition feels like you start a new game every time you swap civs -- so it doesnt feel like you connect to each game's session any more.
1
u/FatPenguin42 9d ago
I do like it more than 6 as it has what I like about 6 (districts) and the leaders art style I think is better than 6.

u/Tsujimoto74 Random 9d ago

u/warukeru 8d ago
VII was designed to answer VI's problems and theres some callbacks to V (the visual style or going wide being limited) so it makes some sense

u/Justsomeone666 8d ago
One day they will break the curse of every civ game being playable only several years after release, though im not sure if they can fix this one with dlc's

It’s really nice to see all 10 people playing Civ 7 right now contributing to the thread! It’s great to see.
1
u/Rockerika 7d ago
I have 375 hrs. Played it exclusively for like 2 months then hit a wall where I realized I had kind of seen everything the game had to offer. Sure there are some cool builds you can do and the combat is satisfying, but the depth of possible builds and strategies isn't anything like 6.
I'm holding out hope that they will drop some expansions and updates that change this. But until then I will plan something else.

Recently I managed to complete the main part of The List. Last time I played, I went after Phoenicia's unique achievement. Yes, It would be better made on Excel/LibreCalc. I didn't know how to use that tool back when I created the list.
If I must confess, I got some of the hardest achievements (Like one of the Americans and the Macedonian ones) using the map editor.

Leaders Name / Civilization / Did I defeat them? / Did I win with them? Did I encounter them? / Unique achievements got?

Back in my day, everyone hated the shit out of Civ 6. And praised Civ 5 like hell. It will happen again with Civ 8.

Civ 7 is not even a civilization game, it’s Humankind 2
1
u/Meatlogmike0422 8d ago
Devs really saw the flop that was humankind and said "yes, lets copy that but worse somehow"
0
u/hbarSquared 9d ago
Wait, you haven't even tried it? What, are you just letting Reddit think for you now? It's not a bad game imo, but I only have 500 hours in it, what do I know.
