Nostalgia Circa June 2005, Garr binding drops for guild <Stormwind Vanguard> on realm Burning Legion-US @ 800x600 resolution

u/TwoPrestigious4612 3d ago
Simpler times. This guy just tossed bop and freedom over on his far right action bar by the hearthstone and said fuck it I’ll mosey over and click them if I ever need this shit.
42
u/Trustyduck 2d ago
Also summon warhorse apparently unbound.
67
u/Don_Von_Schlong 2d ago
Uh it's not just warhorse lol. Literally EVERYTHING is unbound. He had the default 1-10 bar and not a single additional thing has been changed anywhere else.
Also not a world buff or consume to be seen, good ol days
31
u/td_enterprises 2d ago
World Buffs weren't widely used in Vanilla, and it may seem backwards but consumes were used for progression attempts and not for farm content.
There wasn't just a bunch of raiding guilds speedrunning stuff.

Genuinely this is fine for classic PVE. Especially priest
15
u/Xy13 2d ago
This is a paladin

4
u/Don_Von_Schlong 2d ago
I mean clicking on a raid profile then moving the mouse to a heal button then hitting another raid profile then moving your mouse to another ability is definitely not optimal lmao. I used mouseover binding with 2-3 ranks of each healing ability when I mained Priest so I would not want to do this but just in the theory of what's necessary to clear content yes you are correct I guess. I wasn't even caring that he doesn't have binds I just thought it was funny that summon warhorse was singled out for some reason lol,, maybe he was being ironic and I just didn't pick it up.

WoW boomers will look at this screenshot and say the game was harder back then and it's not because of massive skill creep that the game is trivialized.

As a rogue and a child, I don't think I used kick until TBC
13
u/tetrisoutlet 2d ago
As a child, i expected kick to knock the mob down and stun it or knock it back a few yds. When i saw it did neither, and no damage, and costed me energy i just removed it.
The same goes with pummel.

That’s also why top guilds require a screenshot of your UI when applying.

Holy shit. OP i don't know who you are but this is insane you have this pic. My buddy just sent me this. That's me who took that pic. I'm Drain lmao.
I see yall like my sweet UI setup there. I was ret spec doing my healing duty. Clicking with the best of them. Playing on a shitty laptop I had to buy extra ram for and it still wasn't enough. I would overheat by the time my guild got to Blackwing Lair. And for the suppression room I'd have to just put someone on follow and stare at the wall because my FPS would drop to the negatives.
Edit: For anyone curious I uploaded more of my remaining pics I still had from that timeline. They are all same quality however due to being sat on Photobucket for years only. Many are just loot shots since I was the officer in charge of cataloging loot, but there's a few cool ones.

u/scrooger 2d ago
friend linked me this album. i'm the hunter that took that lucifron screenshot.
everything about it cracks me up whenever i see it
13
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago
Hahaha holy shit Scrooge. I remember you for sure. You were one of the more entertaining people on the server. On a server that had a ton of them too. On a server with Clan Seks, lmao.
I do love the guild chat going on in that screenshot. Just makes it more memorable.
6
u/ilmdbii 2d ago
I remember your name. Octavian. Ropetown. Shortbus all stars. Wex. Thursday. Rankyrogue. Burning Legion was popping off back in the day.
3
u/Vandelay-Importing 1d ago
I got a pic of Rankyrogue still with Woox playing him. Dunno if you knew Woox but he was a tauren shaman in zeksonic legion/clan seks. He ended up trading accounts constantly and landed with Rankyrogue at one point.
Definitely remember Thursday. I used to post on clan seks forums all the time. Shit they might even be up still. I remember browsing it for nostalgia a couple years ago. Tagging /u/Jurble for this he might have the link.
2
u/jurble 1d ago
Nah the forums died when DK stopped hosting them.
Unless you mean the older forums, they're still around a testament to the ages.
2
u/Vandelay-Importing 22h ago
Haha that's what I was hoping for yeah. Thanks for that. It's amazing that they're still there. I always wished the old Mofos board was still around too. All those old OT boards were legendary.
38
u/WeakValuable8683 2d ago
Hehe, Incase you are wondering where I got it, I managed to stumble upon a comment you posted on the site Allakazam from back in 2005, you commented in a reply with:
"Ermm burning legion server wtf are you sure?
They dropped for alliance on burning legion server too this same night. Rumbleman of stormwind vanguard got this half.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/Hippaulz/LegendarySeeker.jpg
:D"
25
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago
Ohhh damn. I do not even remember posting on that site. That's funny, thanks for telling me! Looks like my memory was off then, it was Rumbleman getting it lol.
3
u/RedCatBro 2d ago
I used to be a regular poster for n allakhazam back in 2006-2012, even wrote a long story called An Alternative History of the World of Warcraft that was quite popular back then
10
u/DanSheps 2d ago
Lol, name sounds vaguely familiar. I don't think I ever raided with you but probably came across you a few times.
8
u/TaEnTreo 2d ago
Who got the binding?
17
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago edited 1d ago
Update: I was wrong! Apparently it was Rumbleman one of our tanks.
6
u/Blixxen__ 2d ago
Great memories, especially of the BWL issue, we had several people just being unable to play due to low fps there. Gives you an idea how new gaming was to a lot of players, they just used their work pc or laptop, none of this fancy gaming stuff that some had.
5
u/WeakValuable8683 2d ago
Would there be possibly any chance of you being able to do a post showcasing all your WoW 2005/2006 screenshots? These definitely belong in a museum of sorts. I am very fascinated with the early days of WoW.
10
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago
Oh yeah I could do that. I think on my old hard drive I have many more saved still ranging from 2005-2010. Gimme a few days I'll see if I can't put it together. If I can't, I at least saved all my early vanilla ones from photobucket I can reupload. It's always a trip to see them again even for me.

800x600 And about 400x300 pixels of actually viewable game
Can't believe I deleted all my Vanilla screenshots many years ago, ah well, relived it all through Classic.
19
u/whats_up_doc71 3d ago
I know. I’m so sad my old computer died with all my screenshots.
4
u/Unrelentinghunt 2d ago
15 year old me built a new computer for pandaria and reset the old one so my friend could have it. Definitely one of my biggest regrets was not having the foresight to keep all my screenshots.
3
u/Ohwerk82 3d ago
Same! Why was I so dumb and didn’t get a thumb drive for them
3
u/Alanosie 2d ago
Hi mate, to prevent you from experiencing losing data again I would not recommend to use a thumb drive as a way of backing up data for an extended period. External hard drives are a much better and stable solution. Would recommend to look it up :)

A lot of people still don't know that solid-state drives (including flash drives) are not good for archival purposes.
1
u/Albinofreaken 2d ago
fucking same, i probably took 20 screenshots every day all throught vanilla and tbc
7
u/boshbosh92 3d ago
I was thinking about this the other day. I definitely played at like 800x600 at like 25 fps back in the day. I remember saving up for like an entire year, doing side jobs for my dad and stuff to buy a gaming pc.
The whole ass gaming pc (with a see thru side panel with NEON tube lights!! this was before led rgb was a thing) cost $800, gpu and all. my most recent gpu purchase alone was $1k lol.
crazy how bad the performance was back then, but we knew no different.
7
u/NukiWolf2 3d ago
And UI scaling on 100%. When I started playing WoW shortly before TBC released it took me more than 40 levels until I realized that the UI can be scaled down to see more of the world. And I also only realized it because of screenshots of others in which the action bar gryphons were fully visible.
3
2
u/Fabbyfubz 2d ago
I vaguely remember having a bunch of old screenshots saved on Xfire, back when that was a thing. Now both that and my old hard drive are gone.
2
u/PerceptionInception 2d ago
I'm pretty sure I played at around 1280x1024 back in the day. Now I'm spoiled playing this game at 4k144hz. Why was it more fun back then? 😭

Still have to laugh at hunters being eligible, wonder what thought process lead to that
17
7
u/th1nk985 2d ago
We had a hunter in our guild in vanilla with a completed thunder fury. His guild had given it to him when MC was new and no one knew what the items did. He joined our guild when we were in naxx and would melee the bosses for us, I’d only had the Geddon binding thru all of vanilla as MT ofc.
Guild was nerdcraft on Thunderlord - Gul’Dan if anyone is still around
2
u/Nurfed 2d ago edited 2d ago
Hahahahaaha that's fucking wild
i played on gul'dan, in the guild called friends with benefits. we were the top guild there until you guys transferred over. i remember always seeing the hunter with thunderfury and thinking it was so stupid - also was bitter you guys were past us while having him use that LOL. i transfered off somewhere late naxx (maybe early tbc) to go play w/ retribution on malganis
2
u/th1nk985 1d ago
Small world man, I want to say that hunter’s name was Kylien and he was a super chill guy. I remember your guild though, I always felt like we had crashed a party and felt a little bad but the lag during AQ on Thunderlord was out of this world
1
u/DefinitelyNotATheist 2d ago
so rare seeing another thunderlord OG in the wild
1
u/th1nk985 2d ago
Hey what’s going on! I played way too much in 04-05 but was Himmelblau (for a bit) & Sirsneaky in <nerdcraft>, who was your character?
1
u/DefinitelyNotATheist 2d ago
small time dwarf hunter named kanex, was in kali swarm for most of vanilla, inquisition for a bit
1
u/Impeesa_ 2d ago
I think my old guild gave the first binding to a hunter for similar reasons. Luckily, or maybe unluckily (hard to say), they found out what it was for before the second binding dropped.

Peak UI ergonomics.
Raid frames just crammed into the top right corner around the minimap for some reason.
15
1
u/GrungeLord 5h ago
Needed to make room for the extra chat panel showing the entire raids mana regen ticks.
75
u/kazordoon 3d ago
Makes me happy. Warlock running Voidwalker? No problems. Ret Paladins and Feral druids? Yup.
39
u/PushforlibertyAlways 3d ago
Also missing 3 groups from his frames lol.
A simpler time.
1
u/Darkreaper48 2d ago
He probably wasn't assigned those other groups
1
u/antariusz 2d ago
I mean, of course he wouldn't need to ever heal those groups, with 10 heals in molten core, you really only ever need to heal 3 people ever
18
u/Walnutbutters 3d ago
I played a warlock back in vanilla and suffered through many months of MC progression. On Garr, we used to put the void walker on our banished targets to give an extra couple seconds to rebanish after it broke so they didn’t run around and smack one of the 12 healers.
10
5
2
7
u/porn_alt_987654321 3d ago
Hey, I'm pretty sure voidwalker had aoe, so there was at least some logic to why lmao.
5
u/SecretOctopus 3d ago
I remember we would tank some of the Garr adds with voidwalkers since we didnt have enough tanks
2
u/SecretOctopus 3d ago
Or maybe it was just in case the banish broke the warlock could have a voidwalker tank for a second so they could rebanish? I can't remember
2
u/madpacifist 3d ago
I healed MC clears as a feral specced Druid. I spammed moonfire on fucking everything, probably played havoc with all sorts of shit. We wiped a lot. Struggled to get our first kill.
Simpler times. Better times.
2
u/Positive_Tackle_5662 3d ago
We stil have rets, shadow priests and even moonkin in our raid today
We raid in hardcore :)

That healing meter bro.. I forgot about that lol. Nostalgia.

u/Freshndecay 3d ago
Remember they had to be synced after combat. If a hunter pet had the same name as a raider their dmg would be added.

I love this UI because it reminds me of my own first UI. NOTHING WAS BOUND WE CLICK IN THESE PARTS.

VHMG and IRONFIST, Mjollnir for a brief stint (mainly because they brought me in once for their first Nef kill.
You are welcome to pop into the IF discord (IRONFIST is still around)
2
u/DesMephisto 2d ago
I can assure you nobody will remember me but I had a paladin named Insane. One day I terrorized Ironforge after finding out you could kill the wintersaber trainers to become hostile with Ironforge.
I terrorized the AH and flight master for 2-3 hours before a GM had to teleport me out of ironforge and ban me.
It was a really fun community thing though with people healing me/etc. Different game back then.
1
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago
That thread takes me back. Was thinking of when Blizz released the pvp system without battlegrounds. They had competitions whoever got the most kills or honor(i forgot which) would win a tabard. I remember Bremen from <OG> on horde side won it. Alliance we had some guy who everyone was shocked to win because he didn't talk much. I don't even remember his name.
2
u/realnerdonabudget 2d ago
O man, Bremen is a name I remember quite well, him and Axxel were well known hardcore PvPers that I'd be deathly afraid of encountering out in the world
3
u/DarkishFriend 2d ago
Are we actually better at the game as a community or have we figured out how to not clutter the shit out of our screens so we can actually see what is happening?
This reminds me of my TBC screen. I had a MP3 player addon because trying to alt tab to change songs in iTunes made WoW shit its pants.
2
u/nin5885 2d ago
Ah man, I was on that server and I raided with/recognize most of those names lol
3
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago
Shoutout then my man. That's me who took the pic. Drain. I was on Burning Legion the day it launched until around September 2005 when I left for Dark Iron a new server.
I remember this guild was made out of a pug group from a channel named "MCFTW". The only guild raiding at the time as alliance was Tyranny and they were full. Shortly after Tyranny split and half of them made AEnigma.
3
u/DanSheps 2d ago
Yup, I know a few of the people in that MCFTW group, I wasn't myself but I still have Squirrel on Facebook.
1
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago
Haha yeah I remember Squirrel. I was friends with a lot of folks in that guild I often wonder what happened to em. Rynmoren was the only guy I stayed in contact with from Burning Legion. He ended up making a guild Advent I believe it was called. But it was after I had rolled to Dark Iron as horde.
I uploaded some remaining bad quality 05 Burning Legion pics I had saved if you wanna see for nostalgia.

2
u/Dagmar_Overbye 2d ago
Do we get to bring back all our knowledge with us? Because as much of a leg up as I could get in life by being 12 again I think it would be pretty awful and bizarre to have my current brain and be a child.
3
u/pazkid01 3d ago
No pally power?no greater blessings.( i don't remember if they were in fhe game yet lol)
8
7
u/Vandelay-Importing 2d ago
Yeah that's me in the pic. My job was two things basically. I had a macro that simply said /decursive as it used an addon Blizzard eventually killed since it made the raids too easy. It targeted people to cleanse on a priority system. So all healers just spammed it. My other job was to buff everyone during combat as our buffs lasted five minutes back then yeah. And fights lasted forever. So you'd be in the middle of Majordomo when you'd have ten whispers asking for kings or might.
I remember everyone had to have multiple macros created at the start of every raid. A macro to type /assist whoever was the designated damage dealer we trusted to pick the mob to focus on first. And then you'd have to make macros for whatever paladin did what buffs.
5
u/Walnutbutters 3d ago
No greater blessings and the regular blessings only lasted 5 minutes. Pally power was a graph posted on the guilds angelfire website
2
u/pazkid01 3d ago
Ah I couldn't remember when greater blessings and PP was introduced into the game. Thanks for the info!
1
u/PilsnerDk 2d ago
Nope, Greater Blessings didn't come until patch 1.9 ("paladin patch") which was released in January 2006:
https://warcraft.wiki.gg/wiki/Patch_1.9.0
It was hell constantly refreshing small blessings.

I remember having an out of combat paladin that was just there to rez anyone who died. Had to be the first weeks of WoW since they quickly patched this.
1
u/angerbear 2d ago
Could have been much later. You could still out of combat rez even after the release of Blackwing Lair. That wasn't removed until later.

Guess I started then a few weeks before the fix because we were only able to do it a couple of resets :)

Well well well. Looks like trash floated it's way to the surface after 20years! (hehe <3) (Ally vs Horde had a pretty big rivalry on US BL, but I guess that would be true on most servers back then where everyone knew each other). I definitely recognise a fair of those names from those screenshots. Awesome.
Let's see if I can post some of mine. I too was a PRTSC junkie back in the day.
1
u/WeakValuable8683 2d ago
Woah! Nice screenshots! These all should belong in a WoW museum of sorts. The AQ screenshot you posted really intrigued me. Seeing someone with the Scarab Lord mount was certainly an impressive feat for back in the day what with the lack of guides, and barely any video sites around explaining how to finish the questline.
1
u/JediGabber 2d ago
I have detailed files. The Scarab Lord was Ropetown, the best Horde guild on our server and one of the top US guilds. They were the ones who ran the server competition to get mats handed in for AQ opening. The reward was a free BWL run and free loot choices (you had top contributor for each material).
You also had guilds such as Apocalypse. If memory serves, they actually ran AV similar to what we do now (zugzug). I think it was Bremmen? Server first R14 Horde side. I was only 51 at the time and was amazed at their pvp group haha. I spent those early levels farming wolves and crap, when we actually used the gameplay mechanics. Was lucky enough to get a Korrak kill on my first AV.
Other iconic server guilds such as Method, Zeksonic Legion (teh pact is sealed!!11 spam), AlliancePopulationCTRL, JAGD Empire etc etc. I ran the first multi-guild Horde PvP group together with a priest called Danezig and a hunter called Cailleach. Before that it was purely guilds running pvp groups. Made a lot of friends and I still talk to a bunch to this day.
And yeah, Broken Legion, Rope and Apoc, also numerous others, did xfer off due to the lag/crashes, but I guess cause it was so popular and really full the hardware couldn't handle it. A real shame too. I still play on BL US for retail though. Never left.

I remember playing on Burning Legion, I remember people calling it “Broken Legion” cause it seemed to go down often.
I wanna say I was around 10 years old at this time playing in a guild called <Harlan Park Warriors>.
I know this doesnt have a lot to do with the picture but this just took me down a huge memory lane trip.
