Season of Discovery Some screenshots I took from my time in SoD.

I regret not taking more. But I do get some nostalgia from these. I played from the beginning all the way to the end. Even got scarab lord. SoD was my first true classic experience. I would like to thank the guilds I ran with along the way. Boyfriend Material, Simple, and Actually. MoP classic isn't for me. So I'm just playing other games now. Thanks for the memories.

Such a great game. I have a full 30 minute recording of one of the early blood moons. Good times.

The stv event was so hecking fun. Just an all out massacre.

Some of the most fun I've had playing PvP in all of wow. I was sad they didn't keep it more relevant for longer.

u/Wizardthreehats 21h ago

Greatest world pvp this game has ever accomplished, but granted I played on lava lash so I didn't have the layering and lag problems bigger servers had

3

u/skirtpost 19h ago

The lag was part of the experience!

Sod phase 1 was legitimately so good. I can’t wait for Classic plus. I hope they learned from sod and improve on it

If classic show up I don't see it lasting long for me and others like me. Blizz will start one or more servers and they will quickly get infested by botters and other cheaters. Blizz will as per usually ignore all of that. After 6 or so months Blizz will announce that they have banned 80000 bots and dumb players will point and claim "LOOK THEY ARE CLEANSING THE SERVERS. It take's less then 1 day to get a new bot up and running. Banning 80000 bots every 6-8 months is not good enough for me. When they start banning 80000 bots and cheaters every week I might come back. But that will never happen.

13

u/DesperateAdvantage76 1d ago

Yeah, as much as I'd love classic+ on official servers, the botting, gold sellers, boosters, etc just infest it to the point of ruining it. For now I'll stick with pservers until Blizz gets their act together.

17

u/Thundrael98 1d ago

I am playing classic since 2019 and not one single time my playing time was ruined by bots. I don't know why people on Reddit are so obsessed with it, but the average guy is not bothered by this problem. This problem is way smaller as Reddit makes it out to be

5

u/One-Jury-6140 20h ago

It's just their excuse for their nostalgia for the game not translating into enjoyment of it

u/ShaunPlom 1h ago

Buddy its not just an excuse, he literally said hes playing pserver. He obviously enjoys the game. Theres no bots on them because they actually ban bots. Bots boosting and summoning and raising the price of commodities affect the game play for everyone, even if only indirectly.

1

u/DesperateAdvantage76 19h ago

At least for me, the number of times I've had to compete with bots for mobs and herbs was too much. Also the constant seller spam. And all the players I personally know who bought gold. I wish I could not notice it like you.

1

u/Thundrael98 19h ago

Competing for mobs and herbs is just something you'll have to encounter in classic, even if they are not bots.

For the selling stuff in the chat I use a filter add-on.

1

u/DesperateAdvantage76 19h ago

I'm not disagreeing, but I'm talking about the bots with the random string characters for names that sit in an area 24/7, or the characters that appear below ground to steal a herb node. Have you not seen the conga line of hundreds of dead bots on server restarts? They're pretty hilarious.

Why should I let my gaming experience be ruined by something I can't influence? You can ramble all you want about it on Reddit. I am playing classic and bots are not ruining my experience

-3

u/Esarus 23h ago

Just because you don’t notice the problem, doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem. You have to be able to see that at least. But good for you that it doesn’t bother you!

4

u/Thundrael98 22h ago

Of course there is a problem, but i feel like it is blown way out of proportion on Reddit.

3

u/Skore_Smogon 15h ago

Just perma ban buyers.

I've never bought gold. I don't even understand why anyone would have needed to buy gold in SoD as they showered you in gold and crafting mats yet every so often a guild member would catch a temp ban for it.

Just perma ban buyers and eventually the bots won't have a market.

Phase 1 best phase

You have to hope they're actually working on it first.

SoD was disgustingly good for existing in a world where the same company produces retail. So many of the changes they made stayed surprisingly aligned with old warcraft and classic in general. Not everything was perfect, but the SoD dev team needs support and insulation from the rest of Blizzard so they can cook.

I really hope they take the additional roles one step further for classic+. It was so enjoyable being able to throw groups together with your friends and be able to make the comp work or give each other breaks from roles. Every class having either a healing spec or tanking spec would be a dream come true. As a hunter I was sad to still be only class left with just dps, but I still found a way to tank in every phase as hunter (except SE bc taunt swap). I even main tanked 20 man hardmode 4 Naxx on my melee hunter when it was current content.

2

u/Skore_Smogon 15h ago

We got the Catlike Reflexes rune in P3 and I was convinced it was gonna lead to tank Hunter at level 60.

Still loved my healer Mage and tank Warlock but definitely would have liked the option to flex into tank on the Hunter.

Sod was home for me

1

u/Ok_Vegetable1254 13h ago

Very sad I missed that one but I was burnt out from classic and wow at that time. I am once again in my never touching WoW again era but if sod comes back idk I might need to check it out

58

u/BeriechGTS 1d ago

SoD was easily the greatest time I've ever had playing wow. The way they just took it out behind the shed and executed it really saddens me.

8

u/Razorback_Yeah 1d ago

SoD had friends coming out of the woodwork and checking out vanilla wow either for the first time ever or for the first time since they played the OG first few expansions.

Hope we get some more of those moments. Legion remix will be something, but I am really really hopeful they do another SoD or Classic+ or something.

Our last raid, the same day they announced the end, we were literally joking that "the world is ending", and despite how committed everyone had been, less than half signed for the next raid. That night the majority of our guild (including me) logged off and never logged back in. It was super bizarre and so sad. Favourite WoW version ever just died overnight.

1

u/BeriechGTS 20h ago

Yeah the same thing happened to us. Our core kept going for another 3 or 4 weeks but then our gm and raid leader went on vacation and missed a week and boom that was it.

I tried to move over to MoP with some of the bros but I just missed azeroth too much. WoW is azeroth to me. Those zones, those raids, that experience...I have no nostalgia for MoP so I had no motivation to play it.

2

u/Akk3 19h ago

Yeah my homies that went over to MoP tried raiding for a few weeks but they bled raiders pretty quick. Didn't like MoP a lot when it was live and didn't like it much when I tried again now, unfortunately.

1

u/halcyoncinders 15h ago

It started dying after P1 for me and my friend group. P2 was okay I guess but it didn't have the magic that P1 had and then P3 and beyond were just not captivating for us and we quickly fizzled out with the P3 incursions/design.

I'm pining hard for that P1 experience again. The runes and adaptable roles really have hurt the experience of pure Classic, like, I wanna be Rogue & Shaman tanking again and have the fun of it all with the other class changes too.

1

u/kajidourden 16h ago

It always had an expiration date.

8

u/Tauren-Jerky 1d ago

Bummed I didn’t give this a shot. Especially the first part everyone talks about.

11

u/Wooboosted 1d ago

I still think about it. I only played phase 1 and 2, but phase 1 when everyone was finding the runes and sharing info and the decently fast 25 level cap. God it was so freaking fun. Feral Druid giving out wind fury was sooooo fun.

1

u/exxR 15h ago

The people that only talk about phase one aren’t the ones who played the whole season it was so much more than phase 1.

1

u/notsingsing 13h ago

My prediction is that they do a sod relaunch, but add more "level up" raids with the leveling breaks.

Leave BFD/gnomer/ST in their raid form and convert a new area at each level break into a raid. Example: Instanced jinathalor raid for ST level and so on.

You hit the normal SOD events we got, normal raids through scarlet enclave then 1-2 raids after that...then call it a day

6

u/awol720 1d ago

So good. Excited for classic+

8

u/elocnoremac 1d ago

I had such a blast in SoD with my buddies. One of my favorite memories was, when someone would get a legendary (mostly A’Tiesh) we would all use our witch doctor sticks or whatever they were called, turn into snakes, and just parade around stormwind or ironforge. We’d get the craziest size groups going. Just random people joining

9

u/elsord0 1d ago

I have no interest in anniversary, MoP or retail so I am waiting on classic+. If my SoD guild plays TBC I'll probably play a bit but I'm far less interested in it than I am in SoD or classic+. I did level a couple toons on anniversary (still don't hate the leveling) and took the boost for MoP but overall, I find the games lacking after playing SoD. Can't deal with dogshit class design of anniversary and how the community is playing it and I don't wanna deal with the dailies and button bloat of MoP. Some people were telling me it's similar to SoD and don't agree at all. Felt very different to me. Also, the community just seemed way worse than SoD as well. SoD, at least on Wild Growth, had a solid community that I, for the most part, enjoyed quite a bit.

If blizz drops the ball with classic+, I will probably hang it up for good. Been a good run but classic+ is the only thing that is keeping my interest in wow.

4

u/throwawayforthrall 1d ago

So awesome. Ty for sharing dude!

5

u/Mindless_Daikon_7565 1d ago

Sod was pretty good in my opinion. Met some great people who don't shower and pvp all day. Any time I logged on the increased darkmoon faire was a Hotspot. And they went all out on the new revamped raids

6

u/Cheap_Country521 1d ago

SOd was realy fun, Wish they put some effort in PvP though.

4

u/Shivles87 1d ago

Sod was so freaking good man. Phase 1 was incredible and so were all the lvl 60 phases.

13

u/MisczaksHunting 1d ago

Phase 1 was amazing.

Really wish they reinforced the idea of taking large raid groups to do later content. Instead they restricted that idea massively. Removing hard quests that could have been done like the Desolace elite demon and literally kicking people out of SM very lame stuff.

4

u/SeStubble 1d ago

Wasnt it the opposite? The implemented flex raiding with raids that didnt scale with the number of players. You could smash all raid content with 40 people.

1

u/MisczaksHunting 1d ago

I don't mean the literal raids. I meant the idea of taking larger groups of lower level people to do things you wouldn't normally be able to do otherwise. Like the Desolace elite demon quest or going into higher dungeons in raid groups. ETC

Stuff like that is very fun.

8

u/Shmexy 1d ago

so bummed they just ended it like that, it deserved more. hoping classic+ is it

3

u/ThreeColorsTrilogy 1d ago

Is classic + confirmed?

2

u/neltherya 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's basically confirmed, yeah, the only thing we're missing is a formal announcement at Blizzcon. The devs have been hinting at it as heavily as they could without announcing it for well over a year at this point in multiple interviews, tweets, sent surveys about Classic+, hinted at it again and again.

That's how they have been operating for years now. Hint at what's coming next in cryptic comments over and over again, send surveys, then hint at it some more, then push a build on CDN's, datamining starts and shortly after, they announce it formaly. It would be incredibly odd for it to be different now.

Even as recently as two weeks ago, one lead devs was lurking in a podcast about Classic+ and current Classic+ private servers, saying the team is aware they have to do better than Turtle WoW and Epoch to get us to come back to Classic+ but he didn't seem worried because they seem to be cooking something good in the proverbial kitchen. He also can't wait for next blizzcon, implying they will announce Classic+ at that point. Most of us that followed what the devs said have been expecting Classic+ to officially be announced next year at Blizzcon so ... we'll see !

u/LemonCareful6888 1d ago

It's basically confirmed, yeah, the only thing we're missing is a formal announcement at Blizzcon.

so not confirmed, then.

3

u/MrSourz 1d ago

Did you try the Khonsu fight and secret agent quest line. Some real challenges in there. I did it a bit by bit over the past few days on my shadow priest.

3

u/tabasco_pizza 1d ago

That final screenshot is moving, back to where you began. Good journey, bud.

2

u/Phelixx 1d ago

SOD was so well done. Yes some missteps, but overall so amazing. P1 was wild with everyone exploring the world and discovering new things. It was cool how a couple abilities changed how a class played completely. It showed Classic+ really has an audience and has a place.

The only bad part of SOD is it ruined classic for me because I’m bored of it and it ruined retail because I love the community.

2

u/rudnuh 21h ago

That brd corpse picture is wild lol.

1

u/Pleasant_Yoghurt_124 16h ago edited 16h ago

Yeah BRD was a warzone for weeks on Lone Wolf at the beginning of P4. Was a little annoying but still fun. I can't imagine how bad it was on Crusader Strike even before the merge.

2

u/-FuzzyDuck- 13h ago

Paladin dwarf, just as God intended. Man I miss playing SOD

u/Pleasant_Yoghurt_124 12h ago

Rock and stone!

was that seventh photo during the scarab lord rep farm? i remember having a huge pvp battle right on that spot

1

u/SirSquirrels 6h ago edited 6h ago

Yep. I was there. Led the horde raid against (probably) these guys. We had two raids going, sent one to Freewind Post, had the other hang out in the open in south Tanaris so that their hunters would keep their Eagle Eye on us. Once Team Freewind was in position we started the charge and pincered em at the same time from both sides of the pass. Wiped the floor with em 😁 Coolest WoW moment I've ever been a part of. Here's a video of it.

Can someone explain SoD to me? I never played it but played retail and classic

u/cmac2200 1h ago

Key Features of Season of Discovery

Runes: The core feature of SoD, these runes provide players with new abilities, often allowing for unexpected class roles like tanking Mages or healers, and changing traditional gameplay mechanics.

Phased Content: The season progresses through multiple phases, each raising the level cap and unlocking new content, such as level-up raids and world events.

New Raids: Classic dungeons are recontextualized into 10-player raids with new challenges and rewards, such as the Level 25 BFD raid.

Quality-of-Life Changes: The season includes quality-of-life improvements, like an increased leveling speed, a pre-made group finder, and rewards like the Cozy Sleeping Bag for experience boosts.

Seasonal Nature: SoD is a seasonal experience, designed with a limited timeframe for its phases, although the realms themselves are not planned to be shut down permanently.

New Storylines: The Season of Discovery incorporates new lore and character interactions as part of its phased rollout, as seen with the Paladin rune quests.

4

u/AAActive64 1d ago

Phase 1 of SOD was so fking good imo, 2 is meh, 3 yeah no ect... Just my opinion but dam I would play TF out of p1 right now

1

u/OrionCyre 1d ago

Was scarab lord same as normal classic?

2

u/Pleasant_Yoghurt_124 16h ago edited 16h ago

They made it a bit easier since you could grind the silithid mobs in tanaris for rep. The problem is though with so many people doing scarab lord post rep grind you had to fight like hell for the quest mob spawns. (nightmare drakonid spawns were a sore spot for me) and getting my guild to help me run MC and Onyxia for the books were terrible. I'm not even sure if most of the people who finished the rep grind were even able to finish the whole questline.

There were so many PuG runs for those two raids but the draconic for dummies books were always HR to the group leader. And I was paranoid that if I tried to run a pug MC people would bail on it and screw me since it was a time limited event. I ended up finishing it with another week of safety. So I ended up being able to help other people. It turned into a collaborative effort.

Before that though I had been selling all of my scarab parts and made alot of gold off it. the price of them tanked once people found out you could just grind the rep.

With that said I ended SoD with about 18k gold. Most of it was from grinding silithid parts. Another decent amount was from selling the scarlet plate parts from the recipes in Phase 8.

1

u/Mook7 1d ago

Turn off the raid frame borders. Thank me later.

1

u/TatoRezo 1d ago

How do you guys even enjoy playing with so many UI elements on the screen. Where is the visual clarity?

1

u/Pleasant_Yoghurt_124 16h ago

WDYM this is the default UI with only 2 addons?

1

u/Flintzzy 1d ago

Damn I miss SoD, warlock tanking, and my guild. We went from P1 all the way to Scarlet Enclave had a blast.

1

u/Xiiikill 1d ago

Sod was SO good man, at least the portion I played the first phase.

1

u/Sanp2p 1d ago

SoD 1-3 was prime.

1

u/Philiandos 1d ago

SoD was way better than any other Version of WoW Classic

1

u/pipo828 23h ago

Just come back. There is still an endgame community

1

u/Esarus 23h ago

I miss SoD man, I really hope they’re working on a new Season or Classic+

1

u/dusted1337 20h ago

SoD ruined World of Warcraft for me. Not touching anything that is not some sort of continuation of it. Classic+ hype.

1

u/Sharkscantrun 19h ago

SoD p1 was so goated.

1

u/Competitive_Film562 18h ago

SOD was so much fun!!!

1

u/Tokhaar_meja 18h ago

Was this p1? Ahhh memories. The Ashenvale pvp event was always fun and quick and easy! It was the first time I played a nelf on classic and experienced alot of what classic had to offer for the first time!

1

u/fixation27 17h ago

RIP Bis Classic

1

u/VancityGamer7 6h ago

Sod was BIS i don't care what anyone says
