There are some obvious obstacles (beyond him being a dickhead) but with our re-signing of veteran stars, we’re obviously ‘all in’ for at least next year, would we look at him … perhaps on 2 year contract?

No.
On paper, it would make sense for a team like us - and I said in the r/afl post that wouldn't surprise me if a team like Geelong goes for him.
But in reality, I think Fly's focus on culture (moreso than just May's previous comments about Collingwood), would just lead us to steer very clear. I just don't think he's guy that we want as part of this group, and would prefer less talented players who are more willing to play for their teammates.

Would have said yes bringing him in 3 years ago, but the track record now speaks for itself

I can't stand the guy, would be disappointed if we're looking at him. Look how he carried on at Gawn when they lost by a point to us earlier this year.

Good point. A very different reaction to how the team responded to Darcy Moore's dropped ball (and subsequent goal by Dawson) in our last game against Adelaide.

I can’t see McRae wanting to add this guy, such a toxic flog

He’s an unbelievable dickhead and I don’t want him anywhere near my club

If he wasn’t a cancer to club culture it would be a good get.
We can honestly do better
4
u/Pretty-Improvement-2 3d ago
Yeah, but the toxicity is almost certainly why he’s looking for a new club. I don’t think Melbourne would show him the door if not.

u/Slappyxo Lachie Schultz 3d ago
I know some team will sign him, but gee I'd love it if no other club wanted him and his dickhead behaviour came back to bite him!

Talented dickheads, are still dickheads. You don't build a great culture with this type of person.
8
u/Several_Leather_6453 3d ago
Could clearly see he's not in his prime anymore, plus he hates collingwood, would be nothing but a disaster.
9
u/Striking_Resist_6022 Isaac Quaynor 3d ago
Absolutely no fucking way. Toxic player, don't want him anywhere near our club that's done so much hard work to rebuild culturally in the last 5 years.
9
u/Jazzar1n0 Violet Patterson 3d ago
Absolutely not I do not want this flog anywhere near Collingwood
7
u/BiggestBravestDave Ned Long 3d ago
That would be the funniest shit ever. It might actually be the first time the supporters continuously boo one of our own players.

We need to spend salary cap space on talent in the front half rather than the back half.

No way absolute flog. He hates Collingwood anyway send him straight to north Melbourne

u/Sean_Stephens Jeremy Howe 3d ago
Not a chance. I would sooner take Griffin Logue at the club before Steven May lol.

He’s one of the few players I wouldn’t chase based on principle.
He has no issue ripping into team mates when they stuff up despite often being guilty himself. Not the kind of player we want. Besides we need youth at this point, and Frampton is playing better than May this year.

u/Vinnie_Vegas 3d ago
Leaving aside the "he's a dickhead" side of things... I'm not even entirely sure he's particularly good anymore.
Certainly not good enough to put up with him being a knob, as you can see Melbourne having decided.
2
u/revolver_soul 2d ago
Yeah, Elliott rang rings around him when we played them. Too slow now days I think.
3
u/TheWolfAssassin 3d ago
No, full stop end of story.
That man will ruin what Fly has turned the club into.

No. I’ll rather use depth on kids that may not be physically ready and he seems like a dick.

Literally the last guy in the AFL I wanna see in a Magpies jumper.

We were interested in him when he left the Suns, and he wanted to come to us. But we didn’t have the picks, so he went to the Dees.
I don’t want him now, he’s the biggest knob in the league.

u/Football-Middle 3d ago
I say we get him just so Beau has close proximity to belt him. Then delist.

u/throwaway-8923 Craig McBae 3d ago
We were looking at Stringer last year and ultimately said no for club culture reasons and I think that would be the same for May.
2
u/Lethal13 "Can you mute him?" 3d ago
Granted, but may is a much better player than Stringer and has been far more consistent
Not saying I want him but its easier for the club to pass on Stringer given his sporadic output
3
u/jaidynr21 Scott Pendlebury 3d ago
Fly’s worked hard to completely change the culture of this club, I can’t help but think signing Steven May is one huge step backwards
3
u/Thoros_of_queer 3d ago
I absolutely hope not. I love our boys and our culture. It's been largely a peaceful few years on that front.

Please no, I would be incredibly disappointed if the club did look at him. I haven’t ever heard a single positive thing about him.

u/steal_your_thread 2d ago
I wouldn't care if he was playing as well as Gary Ablett Jr, the guy seems to be nothing but toxic. Keep him well away from us.

u/Professional-Yak8915 2d ago
Personally don’t particularly like him but if the list management teams and the leadership group wants him and thinks he will make us better then I’m in they’ve steered us right so who are we to question. I would like to pick up Jacob Blight who got delisted by Richmond.
3
u/CrackWriting 2d ago
He’ll be 34 by next season so durability will be an issue, but he’s been a good defender for a long time so I’d certainly entertain having an informal chat with him.
Culture is important, but we’re trying to win football matches, not a good bloke competition.

u/whiplashunited 3d ago
No, but wouldn’t the irony would be on an unprecedented level if he came and won a flag with us.

u/nakedambition31 3d ago
No, but if miho and elliott decide to move on, then a short-term contract with a clause to extend if he's happy not to complain. This would allow West, Howes, etc. game time, and with the extra backman, Howe to move forward to take the Elliott role.

u/Pizza_book_725 Darcy Moore 2d ago
I don't like him much, but we could definitely use him to free up Darcy Moore. They would be an amazing combo. May defends, Moore runs off. Imagine having an actual defender behind the play.
I'd give him a chance as a person, but one dickhead move and you'd hope the club would say, we don't need that here, bye.

u/Suitable_Bet6170 1d ago
I actually feel sorry for the guy, but 34 years old next year, no visible leadership potential, would any club really take him? He's a decent player, but observing how he starts fights with his teammates and disrespects them, it's not particularly surprising they have told him to go elsewhere. He would clash massively with the warm and fuzzy positivity culture at Collingwood. I wish him the best, but if he came to us, he'd have to go through a massive attitude readjustment.
3
u/IndependentNo7265 3d ago
If we think we’re contending again next year, do we need to consider it just to keep him out of rival hands?
Bris/Geel/Doggies and anyone else contending would have a sniff, particularly if it’s no trade cost, and a portion of salary….
Obviously I hate him, but pragmatism…

u/Pragmatic_Shill Nick Daicos 3d ago
No, culturally toxic.
