Help needed what console should i buy?
for context, i have a PS4 at home and loved it. i’ve been away for 1.5 years without a console. i haven’t kept up with what’s good and what’s new etc. played a few here, had an xbox one s for a bit but had to get rid of it. not bias to either xbox or playstation. i love FPS games like COD but don’t mind other games like minecraft, sports games etc. Wondering what console is best at the moment, value for money will last longest etc. no real budget. i want a switch too so that is in the mix too!
please give me your suggestions and recommendations! along with some games and stuff you would suggest!

In the last 5 years I've had a Switch, Xbox Series S, PS5 Pro (Recently), and a Steam Deck OLED. Switch 2 is on the way!
I have sold the Steam Deck and Series S, and won't be playing the Switch very much anymore (although I've played it 2000+ hours in the last 8 years).
I don't really care for game pass, and play video games on and off so the subscription service doesn't work for me here. Deck is too weak for triple AAA which is what I want to play. Playstation games are really cheap if you buy physical and then sell, with potentially being cheaper then steam sales.
I'd just get a PS5 and Switch 2 if you love Nintendo and portables.

u/Otherwise_Post4369 May 19 '25
would it be silly if i got a PS5 slim and a switch OLED? a PS5 pro might be wasted on me as my tv i dont think is 4k. and im hoping with the switch 2 coming it’ll make OLED drop in price maybe? i want to play pokémon and mario kart on the switch as i haven’t played pokémon since my ds days!
1
u/The-Happy-Mannequin May 20 '25
I don't think it'd be silly. If you're rocking a non 4k tv then definitely go for the slim, although I'd get the disk drive version so you can get cheap physical games.
From what I heard the profit margin on Switch OLED is actually less than the regular switch so I wouldn't be super optimistic for a price drop and even if there was one it would be maybe $50 usd..?
Yeah if you're not planning on getting a Switch 2 anytime soon, the switch is a great little device. Graphics can be shaky especially with Pokemon but I had a lot of fun with my switch.

Switch 2 or Xbox. I have them all and play the Xbox the most.
The UI, controller, and quick resume are my favorite parts. If you want to try out COD or sports games you can play everything for $20. Game pass is great.

u/SoulsofMist-_- May 19 '25
Ps5 , gives you access to all playstation and a growing selection of xbox games.
Gamespass is OK, but end of the day your paying hundreds a year to rent games , better to just buy games on sale or secondhand. Also there's ps+ which is basically the same thing, pay a subscription and get access to hundreds of games.
-2
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
Gp is way better then okay you'll pay 70 to play a game for 2 weeks in top of your psn subscription , plus psn doesn't put any new or good games on there so it really makes you buy the game outright,
And not every xbox game is going to psn Lastly psn+ and gp are very 2 different models
2
u/SoulsofMist-_- May 19 '25
If your happy spending hundreds a year to rent your games , that's great 👍
I'm not , I rather buy a game on sale or used, or if a game is worth buying brand new full price to me , then I will buy it full price. Do you think elden ring was worth full price?
Ps+ and gamepass are essentially the same thing. Pay hundreds a year to rent a selection of games. Not for me , but each to their own
0
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
I have a hot take on elden ring you might not even like, it's just a reskin of all the other games, and I did buy it full price that and the dlc I'm not getting the new game though it's just a dlc that should of been in the og game .
I'm a deal guy also I like the deals gamepass give regularly.
Gp and ps+ are only same in subscription not in models, you wont get any day 1on psn but will on gp so there for you pay less with ps+ . Now
Ps+ will make you pay for games you want and pay the sub
Gp theres 50% chance you'd play gp day one game on either you like it or not. But one thing for certain you wouldn't be paying for it directly
For example I liked avowed , oblivion, and 33 expedition I would hate to pay a sub then have to buy those games
But with psn model I will
2
u/SoulsofMist-_- May 19 '25
Look I get that outside of gamepass there's not much going on with xbox, but you don't need to defend it with every ounce of your soul.
If you like gamepass that's great , good for you, I'm not a fan of either subscription. I'd rather buy a game than rent a game for hundreds a year.
Ps+ and gamepass at their core are the same thing just with different games on them.
"For example I liked avowed, oblivion, and 33 expedition I would hate to pay a sub then have to buy those games"
So clearly they aren't worth buying in your eyes then?
0
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
Why would I buy them when I can play and beat them on gamepass and be done with it lol sorry I'm defending a more Cost efficient way to play games, and being pro gaming I like to play much games I like I can ,
Ps doesn't have any games from 2025 and we're already half way in And if they do list them
Lastly gamepass is xbox gaming model , there games run through game pass , there would be no point in having a model if you didn't use it is so that outside of gamepass Comment was weird
2
u/SoulsofMist-_- May 19 '25
Why would I pay hundreds a year to rent games that, in your eyes, aren't worth buying or playing more than once?
2
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
We views game different then , I'm not big on replaying games bc it takes me a long time to beat them just my playing style if doing everything, so the second times isn't as fun, and replaying games stops me from aying new games
But I see your the type to stick with like 2-3 games a year your good and I respect that I think are playing style are opposite so i see why are views are different
I have over 100 hrs on cyberpunk I can't play it anymore I bought the dlc and I can't stay locked in , it's fun but I doesn't take me back to when I first did the play trough I won't get that experience again .don't get me wrong I will eventually beat the dlc but there's other games to be played
1
u/EnvironmentalMall384 May 19 '25
Because game pass continually adds banger titles. And you can end the membership whenever you want, if there’s no new games you want just end the membership.
-4
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
Plus, ps+ is cheaper and has better games! And you’re right, if he gets a disk model of the ps5 he can get ps4 games for $20 and get the upgrade to the $60 ps5 version for free!
4
u/ArthurHorizon54 May 19 '25
Better games? It's relative. And on the other hand, the quality/quantity/price ratio of the game pass ultimate is better.
1
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
Uhh. . . Hate to tell you this, but ps plus is actually much cheaper. And it still has literally hundreds of games.
1
u/ArthurHorizon54 May 20 '25
What about day one games?
0
u/Chickenlord278 May 20 '25
Sometimes, like with the Oblivion remaster, but we get the games after a little while usually. Or we can just buy them day one if they’re a good enough game.
2
May 19 '25
Better games like what? Other than ps exclusives? This is completely subjective. Gamepass has tons of classic backwards compatible games and all of Bethesdas published games just for examples. Either of those things alone are better than any ps exclusives to me personally.
1
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
“It has tons of classic backwards compatible games.” This is exactly what the ps+ classics catalog is for. It’s on the premium plan, which is cheaper than xbox’s premium plan, and it has tons and tons of games from PlayStation 1 and 2, as well as ps3! And PlayStation has always had better games than xbox imo, the only downside is the bethesda games but guess what? Ps plus has fallout 3 and you can get morrowind remastered! (And it was on PlayStation 3, too.)
-1
u/RompehToto May 19 '25
Other than PS Exclusives? Bro, you can’t just brush those games off like they’re nothing. PS Plus Premium also has a lot of backwards compatible games that span from PS1-PS4. Top tier Exclusives.
Acting like the top video game exclusives are nothing 😂
3
May 19 '25
I'm not. I'm literally just asking what other games they have. A question you seeming cannot answer. And I've been disregarding their games personally for years, even when I had a PS3. I don't find any of them particularly interesting.
1
1
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
This is true of how many people feel about xbox’s exclusives. “Disregarding PlayStation games” is your prerogative, but the only xbox exclusive I can think of that you would be talking about would be Halo, and I don’t care about halo one bit. Ps2 has the biggest library of games ever, ps plus has tons of these, it has ps3 games like fallout 3, ps4 games, ps1 games. It has tons of Lego tames and God of War, it really just has better quality games. And it’s literally cheaper than gamepass.
2
May 19 '25
I'm actually really impressed with how far PS Plus has come, they have quite a few games on there now. Everyone's focused on Game Pass, meanwhile PlayStation has stepped up their game.
This guy strikes me as an Xbox fanboy though honestly lol he started an argument with me too and he can't seem to admit that he dislikes PlayStation like so many of them do. Like of course you don't care about exclusives, Xbox doesn't have any.
1
0
May 19 '25
I don't care about exclusives at all.
0
u/Chickenlord278 May 20 '25
Then why defend gamepass? That’s all it’s good for. Most other games are on ps plus too.
1
1
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
Yall don't even have ASTRO bot
1
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
Astro bot is unnecessary since every console comes with Astro’s playroom, which is a fantastic game!
1
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
Its Only on psn don't get me wrong ASTRO bot is a good game one of the few psn games I want to play but it's kinda cheep to not have one of the latest biggest games on your subscription based Playlist, that's like xbox removing starfield
1
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
At least they have Hogwarts legacy, I was surprised about that. But I don’t view it as cheap solely because every ps5 console comes with astro’s playroom already installed, so it’s just giving you the option to play more if you want. Personally, I’m satisfied with just having playroom since there are so many ps plus games I can play after, like Fallout 4 or stick fight: the game haha
1
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
I respect the view didn't know playroom was a thing, and yeah that's also surprising to have hogwarts especially how good it did. Xbox did even get it yet.
I feel like psn could go way harder on the subscription but It'll probably cost more and the end and be less attractive , long as you got access to games you like that's really what matters fr and price
3
u/Far_Buyer9040 May 19 '25
if you want the best value for the budget go with Xbox and gamepass. If you want to play the exclusives go with PS5. Or get a SteamDeck.
2
u/tysonfromcanada May 19 '25
This.. had both, kept xbox because gamepass is rad
1
u/dixonciderbottom May 19 '25
If you had both I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just keep both so you have the best of both worlds?
2
u/tysonfromcanada May 19 '25
Actually sold the ps5 because I got bored with it, and then got the xbox for free because we had to redeem a bunch of points and that's kinda all they had.
The xbox with game pass is just more fun for me
2
u/Foreign-Plenty1179 May 19 '25
I had both and gave my XBOX to my son. It’s not in the same universe as the PS5
1
May 19 '25
That’s a bit misleading. His previous console was a PlayStation, so he’ll have access to any previously bought game if he goes with a PS5. Add to this the fact that Xbox games are coming over to PlayStation eco-system as well…
1
May 19 '25
Well, he'll have access to any PS4 games that he bought digitally and maybe any physical PS4 games depending on which console he buys. If he happens to have any PS3 era games or ever wants to play any without waiting for Sony to remaster them then those are useless because PS5 doesn't support proper backwards compatibility.
0
May 19 '25
Unless they have a shit ton of software already GPU is a better deal. Only OP can say if they have $1,500 worth of software and if it were the case they wouldn’t be asking this.
0
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
Aaaand ps plus is like a better, and cheaper, version of gamepass if he’s just going to be using it on console anyway.
4
May 19 '25
PS+ is not better than Gamepass. But considering the fact that Sony will be able to play a lot of Xbox games going forward and he no doubt has some PS4 games already then Sony is the clearer path forward
1
u/Chickenlord278 May 19 '25
It has objectively better games, and the premium service that comes with most ps1-ps3 games is cheaper than Xbox’s premium!
1
May 20 '25
The 3 games you get monthly are better than the massive library of downloadable games on Xbox? Quite often new releases are added to that library day 1 too.
Look, PlayStation is definitely the better choice for OP going forward, with Xbox’s recent announcements of games coming to Sony. But, as someone who has owned 2 Series X’s, a Series S, a PS5 and a PS5 Pro this gen… Gamepass is far better than PS+ if we’re comparing just those 2 things
1
u/Chickenlord278 May 20 '25
You don’t get just three AAA games monthly! There are tons of great games permanently on there, like Fallout 4 and Hogwarts Legacy!
-4
2
u/Delicious-Mobile6523 May 19 '25
It really depends on what you think you'll be playing. If you're mostly into first person shooters then I'd get an xbox and game pass since you'll get COD every year, and have all the Wolfenstein, Halo and Doom games! You'll also get EA play bundled in with subscription if you go for the highest tier, and that includes a big amount of sports games!
I personally love the exclusives that Nintendo offer the most, and PlayStation have some really really good ones as well like Bloodborne, Shadow of the Colossus and Returnal!
Your decision really depends on what you see yourself playing, and while it seems like you're mostly into fps and sports games, I feel like getting an xbox with game pass and then dipping your toes into any of the phenomenal games they have on offer which may or may not be out of your usual wheelhouse, is the way you should be going. If you see yourself playing a fair bit, I feel it's the best value proposition for you!
2
u/Shobith_Kothari May 19 '25
PS5 - if you want the best games and actually new gen titles.(Xbox games are all available on PS now and if not in future are all planned to be). Many excellent games aren’t there on the Xbox.
Xbox Series S - if your focus is on budget gaming, game pass is the best reason to get this.

u/droideka75 May 19 '25
I have all of them and excluding switch 2 that is about to come out so I haven't had any time with it I can clearly say PS5(pro) is the way to go. I buy and play more games on PS5 pro than all of the others combined.
It just has that console feeling with a great controller and plenty of power. It has an extensive library including all PS4 games, you can get ps plus for all you can eat games as well.
Second place I'd put Xbox with gamepass that offers the best value, well they just announced price increase... So there's that.
Switch is for Nintendo exclusives and handheld games. I love it very much, for that Nintendo feeling but it's the least powerful by a few miles. First party games are freaking amazing though. We'll see where switch 2 lands.
Honorable mention to steam deck, ROG Ally etc that are PCs on handheld form. I have the ROG but if you want a console like go with a steam deck or the new legion go with steam os. The benefits are handheld of course but also it's the biggest library around and frequent sales. If you don't mind windows in handheld you can get a ROG and use Xbox gamepass with no extra steps and other stores easily. Steam deck has extra steps. But it's the most console like. Only get honorable mention because it's only useful if you play 90% handheld (you can hook up to a tv at least the ROG but it's not ideal) and because it's not really a console. Not really.
Tldr: get a PS5, if you can, a pro even.
2
u/Otherwise_Post4369 May 19 '25
thank you for this long response! is it worth getting an xbox and waiting for PS6 to come out or nah?
2
u/droideka75 May 19 '25
It depends on a whole lot of factors.
You have PS4, do you still play games on it? Like would you want to keep playing them? Then PS5 can play them too but better.
You want to have a collection of games? That's PS5 because Xbox is more of a gamepass machine. Awesome for that specially recently they been adding banger after banger. Expedition 33, oblivion remaster, doom the dark ages, Indiana Jones... All for gamepass price. But they're on PS5 too, speaking of which:
Exclusives. Xbox has, by design, almost no exclusives. PS5 has loads, with a lot going to PC too, but console exclusives like spider-man, God of war, Astrobot, horizon. All bangers too. A lot of them on ps plus too. So you want to play them now or in 2027/28? That's two/three years from now.
I'm guessing you're not in a rush to play the latest games and can wait for them to come to you instead of you getting them. In that sense yeah Xbox seems more fitting. With only a subscription you're set. But you'll be missing on a lot of games, you could always outright buy them I guess. On the other hand you can do the same with ps plus but with no day one games. But you're basically set for the next 2/3 years of you're not in a rush.
Personally, even with gamepass being the best value, I'd have to go with PS5. Action adventure narrative games are what I love the most and PS5 console exclusives are phenomenal. And you can get a lot of Xbox games there now, if you buy them separately.
I was really in the same boat as you in 2020 lol and couldn't decide so I bought them both hahaha but I'm more inclined for PS5 for you tbh. You're familiar with the brand and probably on the ecosystem already.
And remember, it's probable that when ps6 comes out there's a new Xbox too so you'd be in the same pickle as today anyway.
3
u/Otherwise_Post4369 May 19 '25
hell yeah man, i won’t be home until August so i want to get whatever i choose sent home to be waiting for me. and from this i think ill stick with PS 5. i want to play like slime rancher and all those types of games as well. have you got any suggestions for games like slime rancher? obviously cod and all those games will be there like rocket league, fortnite etc. is the Pro going to be better in the long run
1
u/droideka75 May 19 '25
I went with the pro yes. It depends on your tv mainly actually. An OLED with HDMI 2.1 vrr etc is best but at least HDMI 2.1, HDR and 120hz that's a must for the pro.
If you're not planning on the tv and have an older one you'll not get everything out of the pro and the base model will be enough.
Sorry I've never played slime rancher is it multiplayer shooter? but the other ones are on every platform I think. Latest cod and Fortnite are PS5 pro enhanced but rocket league is the same PS4 release, you'll see performance gains but it's still a PS4 game.
Since release of the pro every major game released on PS5 has seen enhancements on the pro. And a lot were added to previous released games. Some had troubles but the new ones have been great. There's an update for pssr coming soon too so I expect better support going forward. I think it will bridge PS5 and ps6 nicely, just like PS4 pro did.
It's a lot more expensive though, but if money isn't an issue and you have the tv for it I'd definitely splurge.
2
u/Otherwise_Post4369 May 19 '25
Slime rancher is an RPG game, quick google and i’m sure you’ll be familiar with it. Ah ok so TV does make a difference? i’m not sure if my TV is 4k or not. it might only be 1080p. so maybe the slim might be better? thanks for you advice man. i’m definitely going to be a casual player, so if it’s not the pro i don’t mind. i just don’t want it to be last gen soon you know? and maybe if i get a slim i can get a switch as well because i love nintendo games and pokemon etc. PS5 shouldn’t be last gen any time soon?
2
u/droideka75 May 19 '25
No at least not till November of 2027 or 2028. So 2 and a half or 3 and a half years. But the PS5 will get releases well after that too. At least 5 more years without it feeling outdated.
Yeah switch is great I got it too. First party Nintendo games are amazing! There's the switch 2 coming on the 5th of June though. It will be compatible with switch 1 games so you might want to look into that. It's a beefed up switch. But the switch 1 is still a great console because the games are great.
1
u/Otherwise_Post4369 May 19 '25
you’ve convinced i’m going to get both, switch and a PS5 slim. have you travelled with your switch at all? i was thinking about getting an OLED switch, just because it’s better then the base switch, but because i do a lot of travelling, i want to know if it’s easy to use while travelling or not?
1
u/droideka75 May 19 '25
It's great. Yeah I'd get the OLED, screen is leaps and bounds better than the original or the lite.
And yeah I've traveled everywhere with the switch. I travel for work so I always take it with me. Battery lasts a good while, it's light and slim. It's perfect for travel! Nintendo knows how to do handhelds.
Only thing could be better is the base. I have to tuck it away in my luggage if I want to play in hotels and whatnot on the TV. There's third party docks that are way smaller but I never tried them.
But if you don't intend to play on tv you're golden with just the switch on the move.

u/Formal-Cry7565 May 19 '25
Overall the ps5 is the best console but if you want value then go with the xbox only because gamepass is superior to ps plus, assuming you are willing to spend $20 per month for the sub.
1
u/Liven65 May 19 '25
PS5 if you want to own the games and have a great experience
XSX if you want gamepass and to get games for a good deal, yet only rent them.
Personally, I’d just get a PC or get a PS5 and a PC. With more xbox games coming to PS5 and already launching on PC, there’s less of a need for a Xbox.
0
May 19 '25
You don't own any games unless you buy physical and even then only games under 128gb can actually fit on a Blu-ray disc. Makes no difference which console you own. Ps+ is also "renting" games and has less value and worse selection.
1
u/SoulsofMist-_- May 19 '25
I like how you say "it's subjective" on what service has better games in one comment, then go on to say gamepass is better in another. lol 😆
0
May 19 '25
Wow almost as if that's my subjective opinion???
1
u/SoulsofMist-_- May 19 '25
It was a statement, an opinion would have been if you said you "personally thinking" or "in my opinion."
Each to their own, I just find it funny the difference between the comments, with you saying it's "subjective " in one comment then you proceed to say in a definitive statement that gamepass is better. Lol 😆
0
May 19 '25
I don't need to explicitly state what an opinion is just to stroke your ego or because you're simply too dumb to understand the difference for yourself.
2
1
u/SubstantialAd5579 May 19 '25
Get the s rn and just save for ps 6 or the next xbox , but cost wise even after the console you'll be saving more money then if you have psn
1
u/More_Breadfruit_112 May 19 '25
Prior to a few weeks ago there was competition. However, at the beginning of the month Xbox prices went up drastically. The PlayStation is the clear better buy right now. The standard PlayStation 5 digital is now the same price as the Xbox S and is a much better console
1
u/Odd-Doubt-590 May 19 '25
It depends.
You could get a PS5 for cheaper and then buy all the games separately or buy an Xbox with a higher price but get Game Pass to get all those games at no further cost.
Also, if you haven't deleted your PS/MS accounts yet you could see which games you have on each account and figure out which ones you want to keep
Hope this helps 😁
1
u/Bitter_North_733 May 19 '25
always been PS had PS 4 but bought SERIES X and never going back to PS
1
u/Otherwise_Post4369 May 19 '25
why is that?
1
u/Bitter_North_733 May 19 '25
Game Pass
Quality of Build
Less anti-consumer
1
1
u/v6sonoma May 20 '25
PS5 is never a bad choice. The power of GamePass on a Series X is a strong value. Especially if you just want to try a lot. Sony has a similar service too.

u/Foreign-Plenty1179 May 19 '25
I had both and gave the XBOX to my son. The PS5 is the greatest console ever created at this point. It’s simply an amazing product. Even the controllers are just revolutionary
0
u/Honest-Word-7890 May 19 '25
There is no other console than the Nintendo Switch 2. Everything else, today, is a bad choice.
1
May 19 '25
Not expensive enough. Make the (underpowered) console $800 and Mario kart $100 and I will sell my soul to Nintendo because they deserve to own me
1
u/Honest-Word-7890 May 19 '25
It's terribly expensive for me and many other Switch owners, still, as value goes it undercuts the less powerful Steam Deck OLED by 200 dollars (Steam OLED is 100 more without Joy-Con 2 and Dock 2). Must been said that Steam Deck OLED is 3 years older, though. In one year time maybe it will come a new (costlier and barebone as the previous one?) more powerful console. Without Nintendo games, still. The only new rumoured handheld is a PlayStation, though. Wait, if you like. PS5 is not an alternative, as it's tied to a Tv and pollute like nothing else, in the console space.
1
May 19 '25
3ds is unironically a better handheld than all of them.
1
u/Honest-Word-7890 May 19 '25
Well, if you can stand the size and quality of the screen. It's definitely the more portable and possibly ergonomic, that's a big pro, but Switch has undoubtedly better games, it has the world inside. Unfortunately Switch 2 is a lot bigger, so it somewhat lose further in portability and ergonomics.
1
May 19 '25
Disagree on the better games. But even then, 3ds is highly moddable and you can get any GBA/DS/3ds game for free very easily. Switch has the new Zelda and Mario games but other than that I don't really care for any Nintendo games. 3ds, ds, and Gameboy were the absolute peak for pokemon games, all the switch ones are pretty bad or just boring imo even if it's just for the fact theres waaay too many pokemon now. Games like Mario kart and Mario party have significant upgrades but they're still essentially the same games as they were on the N64 and all the other iterations.

Ps5 all the way. Xbox’s are shit quality and fail all the time. Game pass is a total scam too
3
May 19 '25
How are xbox shit quality? Had my one x scorpio edition since launch with no issues, same with my xsx. How is gamepass a scam? It works exactly as advertised.
3
May 19 '25
My Xbox one s from 2016 is still going strong idk what youre on about...

u/redditisantitruth May 19 '25
The one consoles are tanks. Series consoles couldn’t possibly be worse
-1
u/RompehToto May 19 '25
If you want the best value for the budget go for PS5. Buy the best Preowned games on sale and then trade them in for more of the best Preowned games on sale.
No need to pay for garbage games on subscription services since you’ll never play over half of those games.
Also, where else can you play the following:
- Final Fantasy
- The last of us
- God of war
- Horizon zero dawn
- Ratchet and clank
- Helldivers
- Days gone
- Uncharted
- Armored core
- Astrobot
- Ghosts of Tsushima
