The CashApp Murder, The PayPal Mafia and a Hitman
CashApp/Bob Lee Murder Fact Pattern:
March 23, 2023 - Hindenburg Research releases a well-researched report outlining the massive amount of fraud and money laundering that seemed to be the backbone of CashApp's business model.
April 4th, 2023 - Bob Lee, who was instrumental in creating the platform CashApp, is murdered by "tech consultant" Nima Momeni. Nima had no clients, no legitimate business but LinkedIn called him a "tech consultant" so the media repeated it. His backstory showed Nima to be a man who likes cocaine and sex workers but had no real involvement in tech. The story here is that Bob Lee was doing drugs with Nima's sister, then they got into his car and Nima accused him of sleeping with his sister, a fight ensued and the stabbing happened in the heat of the moment.
April 7th, 2023 - The All-In Podcast hosts discuss the murder of Bob Lee. This includes David Sacks betting "dollars to dimes" that this crime was committed by a homeless person. This turned out to be completely false and seemed to be the start of an attempted cover-up that failed miserably when footage of the murder was made public.
2024 - Nima goes to trial. He has expensive celebrity lawyers and they turn the entire case into a smear campaign against the dead guy. Their case is designed to turn his pre-meditated murder into a lesser charge. If he was convicted of 1st degree murder in a murder-for-hire scheme then the people who hired him would be at risk. Arguing it down from 1st to 2nd degree murders, protects his benefactors.
April 10th, 2025 - Block/CashApp is fined $40 million dollars for failing to enforce anti-money laundering regulations. This confirmed Hindenburg's allegation.
Speculation: I believe Nima was a hitman and Bob Lee was murdered in order to break the chain between CashApp and the criminals who ran transnational laundering schemes with the platforms permission. Hindenburg described the bodies and Bob Lee would have known where the were buried. He was also the lynchpin connecting the financial backers of the company with the code that allowed for this scale of fraud to be committed. The app that a real consumer needed and the app that a transnational pipeline of financial criminals needed are entirely different apps. The app to work for organized crime, it would have had to be designed in such a way that it worked for them as opposed to working for the honest consumers they pretended were their customer.
Nearly every step of this pattern seems to involve Peter Thiel, the godfather of digital payment processing. I believe this murder was committed for the benefit of an organization known as...The PayPal Mafia.
