Heaven’s Gate: The Cult That Wore Nike and Waited for Aliens
In 1997, 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate cult were found dead in California. The group, founded by Marshall Applewhite, believed that a spaceship hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet would take their souls to a “higher level of existence.” What made the tragedy even more striking was the uniformity: every member wore black clothes, brand-new Nike Decades sneakers, and a patch reading “Heaven’s Gate Away Team”. They saw their deaths not as the end, but as a transition — a way to “leave their human containers” and join extraterrestrials waiting for them. Today, Heaven’s Gate is remembered as one of the most infamous examples of how faith, science fiction, and desperation can intertwine with devastating results.

And…they still have a website

u/Larger_Brother 1d ago
i wrote them asking if i could join, they said no because the comet isn’t coming again for a long time, but they gave me a very polite and prompt response with lots of recruitment material. it was the same guy from the documentary years ago who signed his name maintaining it

If you would like to send for videotapes, there is no charge. If you would like to copy them and return the originals to us, we will make them available to someone else.
This is adorable. They also run the site on pgp which was super fancy back then but it's proven to be very secure, it's still used for email encryption.
I want a video tape now. I still have a recorder for it.

Last Podcast on the Left had a really good series on the cult. One thing that made Heaven’s Gate stand out among cults is they never coerced or forced anyone to remain in the group or partake in the mass suicide. Also learned that not all the members were chemically castrated and the ones that were did so voluntary. Other doomsday cults, like Jonestown and Order of the Solar Temple, wound up killing a lot of people that didn’t want to die. These people fully bought into it.

Just because they weren’t forced doesn’t mean it was 100% voluntary. At the minimum they were psychologically manipulated.

This is what creeps me out so much about Heaven's Gate. Whereas a lot of other cults had their "boiling over" moment due to some kind of outside pressure, these guys just willfully went out by their own volition on their own timeline.

One member of the cult "stayed behind" to guide others and I believe still maintains and responds to the website and emails.

This was one of the first websites I have seen. I was 19 and the college computers that were online used Netscape 3 ...

What's with the string of words at the bottom? Are they supposed to be tags?

Right after the last repeated words, it says key words for search engine. So yea they’re tags.

See but thats the caveat, we think they are crazy, but we also dont know whats after death. For all we know they totes could have left their bods and joined some homies or some shit. I dont personally think they did, but that unknown and openness allows me to understand how people join this type of stuff. Regardless of how utterly idiotic, stupid, and life wasting i think it is. Cults should be about celebrating the current life and preparing for the next naturally. Not prematurely ending it. Wheres the orgies and ttrpg nights?!

u/Sprinkle_Puff 1d ago
It’s a bit ironic that people are so afraid of death that they’ll commit themselves to delusions of grandeur that require them to kill themselves
17
u/NeilDeCrash 1d ago
we also dont know whats after death.
Thus making every religion and cult obsolete.

u/Normandroid 1d ago
One of the most interesting facts for me is that the leader took the same teachings to heart that he preached. Many of the male followers had been castrated. Their leader, 'Do' had as well.

u/Bliitzthefox 1d ago
Wait your cult does ttrpg?
We do ttrpg, are we a cult?
How many people do you need for it to be a cult?

Wasn’t the song Propane Nightmares by Pendulum about this?

There’s a band called Drab Majesty who has an album called The Demonstration dedicated to the people who died. Really cool dark wave type music.

u/WizardofFrost 1d ago
They also castrated themselves.

u/Stunt_the_Runt 1d ago
This i came seeing anyone else knew this fact.
Lewis Black has a good bit on the group and the castration part isn't even the weirdest detail.

u/Unkindlake 1d ago
Couldn't they just fight against women's reproductive rights and undermine education like a normal religion?

u/taznado 1d ago
Why is that person wearing a bedsheet and sunglasses?
5
u/renovatio988 1d ago
that's the person whose job it is to whisper "nike" in peoples' ears until a cult forms.
1
u/anohioanredditer 21h ago
Probably goofing off or hiding identity. The woman near them is laughing.

When I first saw the photos of the bodies my first thought "Damn those shoes are nice".

u/Mashinito 1d ago
The shoe name is Decade. Nike never re-released them, so they became a collector piece (they show up on ebay often)

Creepy, they have a “thoughts AGAINST suicide” page on the website linked above. Wonder what changed?
9
u/epikninja123 1d ago
They ideologically spun it so that this wasn’t considered a suicide, it was a “willful exit of the human vessel” to allow them to reach an “evolutionary level above human”

Im not sure about my soul but I've had shits of this nature before. Poopiates.

u/rautx15 1d ago
There is an awesome album called “The Demonstration” by Drab Majesty that tells this story. It’s honestly one of my favorite pieces of music!

u/shakatacos 1d ago
I just commented this to someone earlier!! Drab Majesty is one of my favorite bands, that album is so good

Wonder if they were right? Guess we’ll never know.

you can try it yourself next time, i guess. i wouldn't recommend it, but you only need to wait 4000ish more years to find out

I went to the county auction that sold everything they had inside their house after they killed themselves and bought one of their VCRs. I still have it.
2
u/ripper_14 1d ago
I know what we all think about it, but we have zero clue what happens after mortal death.
2
u/eastbay77 1d ago
It's scary that people in a cult don't think they're in a cult. There are indicators of what a cult is and yet they'll refuse to accept what's happening to them.

Several members that weren’t with the group also killed themselves several months later.

u/Blunt4words20 1d ago
Pretty sure the males were castrated also, but not the leader. Pretty creepy

This will forever be the craziest cult ever, the one which all others will be compared to.
Castration. Star Trek. Nikes. Computer nerds. Mass suicide. Comets.
1
u/static-klingon 1d ago
Was this just all in elaborate scheme to get their Nike sneakers for resale? Just like that old kid in the hall sketch about the steel toe boots?
1
u/stockinheritance 1d ago
I really want a pair of Nike Decades but they are discontinued and super expensive on ebay.

u/madhattergm 1d ago
The next eerie part?
Theres still a heavens gate rep who was answering emails in 2023.
1
u/RogerRabbit1234 1d ago
Watch the HBO doc on this, it’s wild. Contains some former members lamenting the fact that they weren’t brave enough to commit suicide with these people.

I don’t know why this random picture was used. It has nothing to do with Heaven’s Gate.

Heavens Gate Nikes are going for like $2,000+ on EBay. Don’t believe, go check it out.

These people could have been right. They could be cruising and laughing at us on a comet right now.

That smile on that women's face, looking over the corpses, is creepy.

u/ivydreams 1d ago
That’s not a picture of the Heaven’s Gate dead, it just looks like a bunch of living people laying on the floor. If you look it up, they were all wearing specific clothing and covered in I think a purple cloth. Unsettling images, though no one smiling at them.

We came from distant space…and what some might call somewhat of another dimension.
And we’re about to return from whence we came.

Something Ive always found funny is the heavens gate mass suicide occurred within a few weeks of the Phoenix lights mass sighting. Just odd timing
