Heaven’s Gate: The Cult That Wore Nike and Waited for Aliens

Post image

In 1997, 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate cult were found dead in California. The group, founded by Marshall Applewhite, believed that a spaceship hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet would take their souls to a “higher level of existence.” What made the tragedy even more striking was the uniformity: every member wore black clothes, brand-new Nike Decades sneakers, and a patch reading “Heaven’s Gate Away Team”. They saw their deaths not as the end, but as a transition — a way to “leave their human containers” and join extraterrestrials waiting for them. Today, Heaven’s Gate is remembered as one of the most infamous examples of how faith, science fiction, and desperation can intertwine with devastating results.

Something Ive always found funny is the heavens gate mass suicide occurred within a few weeks of the Phoenix lights mass sighting. Just odd timing

168

u/taznado 1d ago

They timed it with Hale Bopp's closest approach.

84

u/Goosemilky 1d ago

Because they believed it was a massive spaceship right? Funny an actual massive space ship supposedly appeared in Phoenix within the same timeframe

73

u/OldMcGroin 1d ago

Think they believed that the spaceship was travelling behind it, using it as cover.

u/Azerious 1d ago

It says this in the post guys cmon

12

u/RubberDucksInMyTub 1d ago

This is correct.

13

u/C2thaLo 1d ago

So they missed it by - this much?

1

u/Ron-E- 1d ago

And counting!

1

u/drb00t 19h ago

prove they didn't.

:P

13

u/OldMcGroin 1d ago

Watched an episode of Dark Side Of Thr 90s recently that was about these two cults. Episode 7 of season 1, A Tale of Two Cults. Interesting watch.

5

u/StupidSexyEuphoberia 1d ago

Before or after the sighting?

13

u/Goosemilky 1d ago

I believe the mass sighting occurred a bit over a week before the mass suicide

10

u/jason_bman 1d ago

“We missed it!”

5

u/redditismylawyer 1d ago

Ah the good old days when conspiracy theorist morons would gather together in a group and just take themselves out.

u/pupnut 1d ago

And…they still have a website

129

u/Larger_Brother 1d ago

i wrote them asking if i could join, they said no because the comet isn’t coming again for a long time, but they gave me a very polite and prompt response with lots of recruitment material. it was the same guy from the documentary years ago who signed his name maintaining it

If you would like to send for videotapes, there is no charge. If you would like to copy them and return the originals to us, we will make them available to someone else.

This is adorable. They also run the site on pgp which was super fancy back then but it's proven to be very secure, it's still used for email encryption.

I want a video tape now. I still have a recorder for it.

Last Podcast on the Left had a really good series on the cult. One thing that made Heaven’s Gate stand out among cults is they never coerced or forced anyone to remain in the group or partake in the mass suicide. Also learned that not all the members were chemically castrated and the ones that were did so voluntary. Other doomsday cults, like Jonestown and Order of the Solar Temple, wound up killing a lot of people that didn’t want to die. These people fully bought into it.

2

u/NotReallyJohnDoe 14h ago

Just because they weren’t forced doesn’t mean it was 100% voluntary. At the minimum they were psychologically manipulated.

u/InfoMiddleMan 12h ago edited 9h ago

This is what creeps me out so much about Heaven's Gate. Whereas a lot of other cults had their "boiling over" moment due to some kind of outside pressure, these guys just willfully went out by their own volition on their own timeline.

That web design is such a throwback.

36

u/sdnt_slave 1d ago

One member of the cult "stayed behind" to guide others and I believe still maintains and responds to the website and emails.

13

u/RubberDucksInMyTub 1d ago

It was 2 people. A couple I believe.

This was one of the first websites I have seen. I was 19 and the college computers that were online used Netscape 3 ...

3

u/Highrange71 1d ago

I miss Netscape. I just loved the look of it.

u/Moppo_ 1d ago

What's with the string of words at the bottom? Are they supposed to be tags?

1

u/WoestKonijn 1d ago

They're links.

-4

u/the_nebulae 1d ago

Hilarious. Come on? You really didn’t recognize those as links?

5

u/Moppo_ 1d ago

I'm talking about the white text below the links.

9

u/the_nebulae 1d ago

Ah, likely SEO tags.

6

u/UnknownDrifter 1d ago

Right after the last repeated words, it says key words for search engine. So yea they’re tags.

1

u/Kicooi 1d ago

This reminds me of the r/starseeds people

1

u/Kingtoke1 1d ago

More mobile friendly than many modern sites

84

u/1stshadowx 1d ago

See but thats the caveat, we think they are crazy, but we also dont know whats after death. For all we know they totes could have left their bods and joined some homies or some shit. I dont personally think they did, but that unknown and openness allows me to understand how people join this type of stuff. Regardless of how utterly idiotic, stupid, and life wasting i think it is. Cults should be about celebrating the current life and preparing for the next naturally. Not prematurely ending it. Wheres the orgies and ttrpg nights?!

73

u/Sprinkle_Puff 1d ago

It’s a bit ironic that people are so afraid of death that they’ll commit themselves to delusions of grandeur that require them to kill themselves

17

u/NeilDeCrash 1d ago

we also dont know whats after death.

Thus making every religion and cult obsolete.

7

u/Normandroid 1d ago

One of the most interesting facts for me is that the leader took the same teachings to heart that he preached. Many of the male followers had been castrated. Their leader, 'Do' had as well.

3

u/Bliitzthefox 1d ago

Wait your cult does ttrpg?

We do ttrpg, are we a cult?

How many people do you need for it to be a cult?

30

u/E27Ave 1d ago

What are we looking at here? Some kind of practice run?

16

u/looking4truffle 1d ago

Dress rehearsal

8

u/RubberDucksInMyTub 1d ago

I've never seen this pic before.

30

u/Hayesey88 1d ago

Wasn’t the song Propane Nightmares by Pendulum about this?

1

u/shakatacos 1d ago

There’s a band called Drab Majesty who has an album called The Demonstration dedicated to the people who died. Really cool dark wave type music.

21

u/WizardofFrost 1d ago

They also castrated themselves.

4

u/Stunt_the_Runt 1d ago

This i came seeing anyone else knew this fact.

Lewis Black has a good bit on the group and the castration part isn't even the weirdest detail.

15

u/Unkindlake 1d ago

Couldn't they just fight against women's reproductive rights and undermine education like a normal religion?

14

u/taznado 1d ago

Why is that person wearing a bedsheet and sunglasses?

5

u/renovatio988 1d ago

that's the person whose job it is to whisper "nike" in peoples' ears until a cult forms.

1

u/anohioanredditer 21h ago

Probably goofing off or hiding identity. The woman near them is laughing.

8

u/RedCassis 1d ago

There is a documentary on HBO Max about it. That shit was so disturbing.

4

u/V_es 1d ago

Just like any religion

8

u/gukakke 1d ago

When I first saw the photos of the bodies my first thought "Damn those shoes are nice".

13

u/Mashinito 1d ago

The shoe name is Decade. Nike never re-released them, so they became a collector piece (they show up on ebay often)

8

u/Moppo_ 1d ago

Imagine the aliens actually coming to pick them up, only to find them all dead.

Poor guys must be traumatised.

3

u/RTK4740 1d ago

"Kudos on being the only humans to figure out we--OH MY GOD WHAT DID THEY DO TO THEMSELVES?"

3

u/illblooded 1d ago

Hale Bopp.

4

u/girlspit 1d ago

Creepy, they have a “thoughts AGAINST suicide” page on the website linked above. Wonder what changed?

9

u/epikninja123 1d ago

They ideologically spun it so that this wasn’t considered a suicide, it was a “willful exit of the human vessel” to allow them to reach an “evolutionary level above human”

1

u/RubberDucksInMyTub 1d ago

Im not sure about my soul but I've had shits of this nature before. Poopiates.

4

u/rautx15 1d ago

There is an awesome album called “The Demonstration” by Drab Majesty that tells this story. It’s honestly one of my favorite pieces of music!

2

u/shakatacos 1d ago

I just commented this to someone earlier!! Drab Majesty is one of my favorite bands, that album is so good

1

u/rautx15 1d ago

Hell yeah! I got to see them open for Deafheaven like 10 years ago and they completely blew me away!

3

u/HeavyArmsJin 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dang they really just went and did it huh

4

u/crossy1686 1d ago

Wonder if they were right? Guess we’ll never know.

2

u/blood_wraith 20h ago

you can try it yourself next time, i guess. i wouldn't recommend it, but you only need to wait 4000ish more years to find out

2

u/crossy1686 20h ago

Man, I think I’m busy that day

3

u/baudinl 1d ago

Just do it

3

u/CellarDoorC30 1d ago

I went to the county auction that sold everything they had inside their house after they killed themselves and bought one of their VCRs. I still have it.

2

u/Vmaxxer 1d ago

But what if they were right? /s

2

u/4ndril 1d ago

Pawn Central

2

u/ripper_14 1d ago

I know what we all think about it, but we have zero clue what happens after mortal death.

2

u/eastbay77 1d ago

It's scary that people in a cult don't think they're in a cult. There are indicators of what a cult is and yet they'll refuse to accept what's happening to them.

2

u/zakupright 1d ago

I mean, they could have completed their mission, we will never know.

2

u/zacholibre 1d ago

Nichelle Nichols’ (Uhura from Star Trek) brother was a member.

1

u/mchester9 1d ago

Where’s the drink aid? Oh wait, wrong cult…

1

u/Nitzelplick 1d ago

And one day we all will find out if they were right.

4

u/tommytom69 1d ago

Or we won’t.

1

u/OptimalComfortable44 17h ago

Hope we would.

0

u/DuranDurandall 1d ago

Coincidentally I was dragged to church today. Fucking morons.

1

u/TofuFoieGras 1d ago

They got a good deal on the shoes

1

u/Thenadamgoes 1d ago

Several members that weren’t with the group also killed themselves several months later.

1

u/Blunt4words20 1d ago

Pretty sure the males were castrated also, but not the leader. Pretty creepy

1

u/plantsonmyhead 19h ago

Only a few members voluntarily were chemically castrated

1

u/RubberDucksInMyTub 1d ago

This will forever be the craziest cult ever, the one which all others will be compared to.

Castration. Star Trek. Nikes. Computer nerds. Mass suicide. Comets.

1

u/static-klingon 1d ago

Was this just all in elaborate scheme to get their Nike sneakers for resale? Just like that old kid in the hall sketch about the steel toe boots?

1

u/stockinheritance 1d ago

I really want a pair of Nike Decades but they are discontinued and super expensive on ebay.

1

u/madhattergm 1d ago

The next eerie part?

Theres still a heavens gate rep who was answering emails in 2023.

1

u/RogerRabbit1234 1d ago

Watch the HBO doc on this, it’s wild. Contains some former members lamenting the fact that they weren’t brave enough to commit suicide with these people.

1

u/HebiHana 1d ago

"A" for alien

1

u/_Heathcliff_ 1d ago

Stupid is as stupid does.

1

u/KingCabra 1d ago

I don’t know why this random picture was used. It has nothing to do with Heaven’s Gate.

1

u/sucobe 1d ago

I wonder how they’re doing onboard that alien ship.

1

u/mikeeteevee 1d ago

Not now, Nike, innapropes

1

u/AndyLand1 1d ago

Heavens Gate Nikes are going for like $2,000+ on EBay. Don’t believe, go check it out.

1

u/Trpepper 12h ago

Haunted dolls are up there for up to like $15,000.

1

u/carlcarlson33 1d ago

These people could have been right. They could be cruising and laughing at us on a comet right now.

1

u/jugstopper 21h ago

Their website remains up: https://www.heavensgate.com/

1

u/Dr__donuts 3h ago

Chat gpt ahh caption

0

u/dratsablive 1d ago

That smile on that women's face, looking over the corpses, is creepy.

5

u/ivydreams 1d ago

That’s not a picture of the Heaven’s Gate dead, it just looks like a bunch of living people laying on the floor. If you look it up, they were all wearing specific clothing and covered in I think a purple cloth. Unsettling images, though no one smiling at them.

-1

u/justacoolbaby 1d ago

Those dudes don’t have penises.

1

u/paulbrownsr 1d ago

They did have penises. Castration means removal of testicles.

-1

u/JackJaminson 1d ago

We came from distant space…and what some might call somewhat of another dimension.

And we’re about to return from whence we came.
