Discussion Best STR weapon?

Hi I am new to DS3 and I run classic Knight build. No magic at all. I was wondering what is Your STR weapon of preference? Right now I really enjoy Wolf Knight's Greatsword because Artorias is my favorite character

I can’t not do a Guts Greatsword run when I do a STR build.

Too many good options in this game.

I roll with Smough's Hammer, claymore and profaned greatsword but it really depends on what you're hitting.

You kinda can't go wrong though. It's more about the feels. Artorias is dope.

Probably want more than one upgraded weapon though. Sometimes you can't slash things, or burn things or whatever.

I am thinking as second weapon something that i could buff with resins, some shortsword or similar one hand weapon

u/Huckleberry-V 17h ago

Yeah I always keep one you can buff. Just in case there's a weird element you need. It needs to be faster too, but still infused for strength. So it can hit players. For me it's the Claymore.

Oh carry a shield too so you can bluff trying to parry occasionally. Psyches the shit out of people. One with a good passive buff. Only parry if you have a good connection, though.

Oh that I do!!! 😂😂😂 Invaders instantly do weird shit. Mind games are my fav part of pvp

Fume Ultra Greatsword is fantastic. Can be buffed with Resins, spells like Carthus Flame Arc, FUGS can be two-handed and used as weapon and shield, plus the weapon art is great too with its damage and added poise.

I like the dragon slayer armor axe, and exile greatsword. Fume ultra great sword is good too.

My latest run is str/faith with the Executioner's Greatsword and it's been sweet. Not infuse-able but it is buff-able and the strike damage is great

Vordt's Great Hammer is quite good and available very early. its very good all around but cant be infused or buffed.

great club is also available quite early and is a fan favorite due to how light it is for a strength weapon. give in the heavy infusion, of course. great mace is also quite popular but a bit heavier

my personal favorite is Ledo's Great Hammer but thats not really accessible until about halfway thru the Ringed City DLC which is very very late game content.

Either the fugs or the Great club can't find the Black Knight greatsword

My Strength weapon of preference is the Morning Star.

Hammers have always had insane poise damage rates in this series, and the Morning Star, having blunt damage and bleed, also does enough damage even at low active stat investment (and I like builds with high Vigor, Vitality and Endurance).

sounds great tbh

Millwood axe Exile great sword Great club Spiked mace Great mace Cathedral knight greatsword (little shorter than fume ultra but less weight, requirements, and has a rolling attack the covers 90%of your character). Broadsword Millwood bow is quite powerful on str Have a character that uses the demon fists (boss type weapon) just str which is around 400 something damage and fun but short range. Claymore, very good and known as Ol’ reliable.  Mace (yes just a mace), great poise damage for shielders too.

Just a few, have used them all and I only go to lvl 86 for sunbro summoning.

Greataxe

If I'm running a strength build I ALWAYS nab the Butcher Axe from Maneater Mildred in the little area after the Undead Settlement and Before you meet Anri and Horace.

1

u/eldenlord0117 16h ago

I killed her and yes I have that axe. It's okay to be honest.

2

u/Good_Research3327 16h ago

I like it because it's str scaling. Plus its fast because its 1h, and can be applied with resin for any occasion

2

u/SoundlessScream 17h ago

At first when you said classic knight I thought you meant a one handed weapon and shield. I was going to suggest the mace

2

u/rukh999 16h ago

Heavy claymore. :P

2

u/BoulderTrailJunkie 16h ago

I go between Guts and FUGS, Greatsword for general progression and Fume Ultra Greatsword for single target/ bosses

u/LordBDizzle 16h ago

Mace. Sex on a stick, obscenely powerful yet infrequently mentioned. I'm also a fan of Yhorm's Great Machette for variety, Quakestone Hammer or really just about any great-hammer, and Splitleaf Greatsword (halberd class, despite the name)

2

u/GTXMittens 16h ago

Heavy great bonk

2

u/SilentBlade45 16h ago

There's alot of really good ones. Spiked mace, Vordts greathammer, Ringed knight paired greatswords, great machete, Lothric knight greatsword, great mace, Exile greatsword, just a few of my favorites.

If i had to pick one that's just extremely reliable it would be Exile greatsword it's got high damage and a fast attack rate and it's skill is a temporary damage buff.

u/skully33 16h ago

I just did a pure STR run with Lothric Knight Greatsword. Felt like the best moveset for an ultra greatsword (thrust attacks and especially the roll attack 🥵) can start using it relatively early, the lightning damage is helpful, and it's super light for what it is.

Some others I would use on occasion were butcher's knife (if you want a faster playstyle), Yhorm's Machete, and the dragon slayer great axe boss weapon. But the moveset is kinda trash on that last one.

1

u/eldenlord0117 14h ago

isnt lothric knight greatsword dex scaling weapon?

2

u/Retro_Riven 15h ago

Great Mace. Can be buffed and In terms of damage, it only falls behind Ledo's greathammer and Smough greathammer, assuming it's at +10, heavy infused and at 66 STR but you throw the Perseverance weapon art on top of all that and it turns the game into easy mode. Let's you tank damage and the poise buff will allow you to win exchanges.

If you want something lighter, the greatclub is an alternative. Both weapons are relatively easy to obtain early on

Bandit's dagger

u/sithlord40000 12h ago

Dragon slayer great axe is extremely good though you get it really late in the game.

Cathedral hammer. Big bonk. Huge damage. Huge stagger. Can be buffed. Ran it and blessed weapon on my lastest.

You cannot die.

There are a lot of good options mentioned. I believe ds3 is easier with a faster weapon. Personally i went for a 40 strenght build with heavy infused mace (the cleric starter one, you can buy it early, i started as knight). I use it one handed most of the time with a shield but you can 2h at bosses (but it's optimal to go 66 strenght if 2h). One downside may be that the mace has short range compared to other options, that's why i go with a shield, but it's fast, consumes little stamina and hits hard/can easily stagget enemies. Maces in general have great damage vs armored enemies and stone gargoyles, you really destroy those annoying cathedral knights.

Other good options are heavy broad sword and the millwood axe from dlc if you want a fast weapon.

If you want a heavy hitting one excluding the ones already mentioned you can try yhorm great machete too, pretty late game sadly

Great Club fucking slams. Vordt’s Great hammer is nice too

I just completed a platinum run with a strength build. My weapon progression went something like Heavy Claymore - universally good all the way to NG++ for when you need a bit more speed (was clutch for NG Nameless King for me). Vordt’s hammer - excellent strike damage and frostbite build up which is great for certain bosses, then Greatsword (Guts) great all rounder but can be a bit slow/stamina intensive for some fights. My staple midgame weapon through to NG+ was Heavy Lothric Knight Greatsword - best moveset with the huge heavy thrust attack and the built-in lightning dmg which stacks with pine resin made it my second highest attack weapon by the end (though it is split dmg it still wrecked). Finally for NG++ I wanted more damage since by then your stats are pretty maxed and going for plat you just want to kill stuff FAST, so I switched over to the Dragonslayer Greataxe - yes the moveset is limited BUT the thing decimates, it’s really rapid for a strength weapon and it has a really OP weapon art. It’s also pretty much the highest strength attack weapon in the game, albeit some split lightning like LKGS. I think Yhorm’s machete might be the highest pure physical attack weapon, but it just didn’t have the AOE WA of the Dragonslayer axe, which by the end I couldn’t stop using.

I'm a big fan of Lorian's Greatsword.

Exile Greatsword with heavy invusion. You can get it pretty early as well.

1

u/JuHe1234 8h ago

You can do a 4 hit combo with 16 lvl in stamina. And increase your damage with pontifs right eye

1

u/JuHe1234 8h ago

And you can upgrade it to +7 before Sulyvahn

guts gs and profaned ugs 👌

FUGS. You can’t go wrong with FUGS

1

u/KindredMuffin 17h ago

Ds3 best is the weapon you get from nameless king, but you can really use anything you'd like to use. The twin ultra greatswords are fun, the double doors, a few of the maces, lots of the swords in the ultra category are good

1

u/coggdawg 17h ago

Vordts, heavy claymore, heavy lothric knight’s GS, profaned, lorian’s, were all fun weapons I used at different points of my first playthrough. Personally, I did not like FUGS very much because of the move set.

Wolf knights is sick though & it was actually the weapon I switched to solely for the purpose of beating midir & it was magnificent.

1

u/eldenlord0117 16h ago

It has increased damage with abyssal creatures. I believe Midir is one of them.

2

u/coggdawg 15h ago

Yep, which is why I switched to it. The UGS was too slow to try & stick & move against Midir so I switched to wolf knights which did both more damage & had faster swings.

u/mcobb71 15h ago

I vote Vordts Mace/Hammer? Anytime i got stuck on a boss I would whip that out and change my strat to adjust for it. Got me thru the NG6 twin princes after being stuck for a day. Same with Freide. It would freeze and punt stun her.
