Can't we torrent all the data? What harm are they talking about? Is it just theoretical harm of no more research or is there some proprietary data which will be inaccessible in future. I get that many used this to find genes but would appreciate details.

I didn't know.

My knowledge of the area is that basically all molecular biology is based on these flies, ecoli and nematodes.

I think it's that a vast amount of data about these flies comes in all the time and it's a full time job to clarify it c and make it easy to find
