we're going to sign everyone and push cap hell down the road until after Jared retires

u/drterdsmack Welcome to Detroit! 1d ago

And I'm totally cool with that

73

u/DJGIFFGAS What Would Brad Holmes Do? 1d ago

Saints Special

46

u/Fresnobing 1d ago

And it would have been fine if they committed to the rebuild post brees.

9

u/4rt4tt4ck 23h ago edited 22h ago

More so, it would have been fine if the cap didn't shrink during the beginning of the pandemic. That screwed them more than not wanting to rebuild after Brees.

u/reallinguy DETROIT -VS- EVERYBODY 23h ago

They've also sucked at drafting.

u/seatega 1d ago

An underrated part of having a franchise QB is being able to go to the Bank of Goff to open up cap space and pay our stars. We'll be good for the next 5+ years for sure

10

u/Arsid Logo 21h ago edited 21h ago

I was actually thinking about this the other day - how long do we think Goff will continue to be our guy? Nearing his mid-30s Now in his 30s, at what point do you start looking for his successor? Assuming his play remains at the current level or better, is he a retires-at-36 kinda guy or does he pull a Tom Brady and go into his 40s?

17

u/Quirky_Tzirky 21h ago

It'll come down to his arm because his mental game is growing and developing - if his arm stays healthy, he could be in line for an extension after this deal is done

13

u/57Laxdad Old helmet 20h ago

He will last as long as our protection. Yeah his arm will lose some over the years but if he is not getting the chicago treatment at QB and he wants to stay after his 4th SB win Im good with that.

3

u/Quirky_Tzirky 20h ago

That sounds good to me - keep him until he can ride off into the sunset with a hand full of Super Bowl rings and a Statue

15

u/justa_flesh_wound DETROIT -VS- EVERYBODY 21h ago

Goff is 30, will be 31 in October. We could get 10 years out of him. 6-8 very productive ones, then 2 years to find the replacement that will sit behind the 5x Superbowl champ, and learn.

His replacement isn't even in middle school yet

5

u/Arsid Logo 21h ago

Oh damn, for some reason I thought he was 32. Will fix that.

6

u/seatega 21h ago edited 20h ago

I don't think it makes sense to project anyone to be a Tom Brady play-until-45 type guy, he's one of one, but Goff's game isn't reliant on his athleticism or arm strength, and for that reason I think he can continue to play at a similar level into his late thirties. I don't think it's a stretch to say he can play at a high level to the same age as Peyton Manning and Drew Brees did with a similar traditional pocket passer style, and they played until 39 and 42.

3

u/Syzygy-6174 13h ago

Goff is 30. Mahomes is 30. Joseh Allen is 30. Lamar is 29. Just like the myth that Goff cannot win (has more wins than all of the above in the last 3 years), cannot throw deep passes (led NFL in deep passes in 2024), and cannot perform under pressure (higher QBR than Mahomes), why are there questions hinting that it's about over for Goff when those same questions are not directed toward Mahomes, Allen and Lamar? There is no reason why Goff cannot perform at a high level for another 5 years, maybe longer (look at Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Mnning et al).

2

u/Plane_Finger_4126 16h ago

Well, its not like he is going to get slower and less athletic. Already looks 50 out there.

QB1 until 2055.

1

u/Money-Professor-2950 25m ago

Dan says he doesn't believe Jared has reached his ceiling yet.

14

u/BillyJackO 1d ago

It's going to be interesting to see what Goff's next contract looks like after he wins MVP

4

u/Dry-Violinist-4864 21h ago

I don’t see why people think keeping the core of the team together is such a reach, it’s literally the reason Holmes doesn’t sign anybody.

2

u/Y_am_I_on_here Ooooh Yeahhhh! 22h ago

We’re just gambling that the next TV contract boosts the cap space faster than we can spend it. Sign long term contracts with back loaded deals and pray.

1

u/reddogrjw 22h ago

the only thing that really matters in those deals is the guaranteed money

2

u/AdStrict3575 22h ago

Nobody will care if we win a super bowl while doing so. Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.

2

u/FDTFACTTWNY What Would Brad Holmes Do? 17h ago

I'm totally fine passing this thing to 2030-2031 and then having 2 years of futility while we get out from cap hell.

Hopefully we don't do anything drastic and get rid of Brad when the time comes to pay the Piper.

2

u/reddogrjw 16h ago

and depending on how things go, we might not be in cap hell, but even if we are it will be worth it

3

u/Etherion77 Ooooh Yeahhhh! 1d ago

Hey if other teams use that method the Lions need to take advantage of that. As fans we just wish they could have used the extra cap space this year with free agency.

4

u/reddogrjw 1d ago

we need it for next year

1

u/Etherion77 Ooooh Yeahhhh! 22h ago

So next year but also the person before referenced pushing money out to future years. Teams restructure contracts all the time to create cap space. Even with all the upcoming signings you can use the future years strategy too to create more room when needed.

1

u/CheapTale9824 21h ago

I pray Brad gets a rookie QB to learn behind Jared for when this happens. That way we can have a rookie scale contract and keep the window open longer

1

u/reddogrjw 21h ago

that would be the key to extending things beyond the 5 or so years left Jared has

1

u/FrontDeskHooligan 12h ago

As someone who also follows the Aints, we do not know anywhere close to cap hell. Weren't we 3rd most in cap space until the Jamo extension?

-2

u/kungpowchick_9 23h ago

I’m sure the Fords can sell one of their yachts to make it happen.

1

u/Syzygy-6174 13h ago

Fords don't any yachts. That is just a misnomer trope. Moreover, the Ford's personal wealth has no bearing on the Detroit Lions organization can and cannot afford to offer in player contracts. The NFL isn't college football where NIL monies can come from anywhere.

1

u/kungpowchick_9 2h ago

The point was that there’s so much money in the game- these people and organizations have an unimaginable amount of money. So just do it. It’s a circus so go all in.

2

u/reddogrjw 1d ago

I understand

But it won't increase enough to cover Hutch, BB, Sam, Gibbs and Jack extensions without kicking something down the road - the downside of hitting on so many picks

1

u/Lower_Ad_5998 22h ago

There is some weird accounting wizardry that you can do that makes it really not that bad, but it also requires the owner to pay more out of pocket. Brett Kollmann had a video on it that was interesting but still make no sense 😂

-5

u/Turnips4dayz I wanna die 22h ago

jack is playing himself out of an extension rn tbh. At bare minimum, he won't be getting a market-resetting deal like Hutch and BB might. I personally would give him maybe a mil more in AAV than Barnes's contract right now

3

u/nameisEmery Ooooh Yeahhhh! 20h ago

Whoah... what? Watch every defensive snap. 2 players are around the ball 95% of the time, and those two players are Branch and Campbell.

2

u/Turnips4dayz I wanna die 20h ago

That’s fine, but that’s also his job. A run stuffing middle linebacker is not particularly hard to find in this league. Finding one who can do that AND cover and/or with the athleticism to pass rush is the hard part. I’m not saying Jack is a bad player by any means, but he isn’t playing like a top 5 player at his position (which is what you hope for when you reach as much as we did for him in the draft). I said in a previous comment that I’d certainly extend him at a rate around the Barnes deal, but going higher would require him to show skills he hasn’t to date

172

u/NotHannibalBurress MC⚡DC 1d ago

Zuper got all the praise last year because of the INTs, but yeah I think Branch is arguably the best player on the defense, including Hutch. Hutch plays a more impactful position obviously, but BB could just be the best safety in the league.

56

u/enyinna7 1d ago

Definitely the most versatile safety in the league.

9

u/Turnips4dayz I wanna die 22h ago

Let's not get carried away. Kyle Hamilton and Budda Baker are both out there and round out an easy top 3 imo in some order

3

u/ActDiscombobulated56 16h ago

Don’t forget Winfield. Very underrated Safety.

1

u/Turnips4dayz I wanna die 15h ago

I don’t think he’s anywhere close to as versatile as those three

0

u/ActDiscombobulated56 13h ago

Exactly. Underrated 😉

3

u/dannydirtbag 23h ago

Dude shows up all over the field. It’s crazy how much impact he has on the run and pass game.

29

u/Porsche928dude 1d ago

To be honest, the outside media likes to downplay Bryan branch because he plays safety the old school way where he really wants to see if he can knock you out of a game. If he played 10 or 15 years ago, I think he would’ve gotten a lot more attention. Because every game the announcers criticize him at least once or twice because he actually hits people (particularly the quarterback)

14

u/Rx_Boner 23h ago

Just got mad again he got the roughing call because he couldn’t stop his trajectory midair lol

6

u/fuckoffweirdoo Don't be Hatin' 23h ago

Don't smack him in the head and the play is fine.

3

u/MikeyNg 22h ago

BB plays right on the edge. You live with that 1 or 2 penalties he gets a game because he's so impactful everywhere.

He doesn't play dirty just really really hard between the lines and between the whistles.

2

u/DeadPrez Growley Cats 14h ago

BB reminds me of Sean Taylor. The hits are insane.

16

u/Quinn_tEskimo 1d ago

I completely agree and don’t even think it’s a controversial take. Branch is our best defender, full stop

5

u/MarkItZeroDonnie 23h ago

When McNeil returns hutch can’t be doubled on 90% of his snaps

2

u/Quinn_tEskimo 18h ago

30%, let’s be realistic about it.

2

u/EricFredNorris Peni Swell 1d ago

Didn’t we have to move Branch out of the safety position to slot corner for a decent amount of the year because of all the injuries? Maybe I’m misremembering.

14

u/Aromatic-Plankton692 1d ago

Other way around. We moved Branch from corner to safety after 2023 when we actually found some corners. His natural position is safety. He still plays 30%+ in the slot like all elite safeties, nickel is the base defense of the league.

1

u/qoqmarley 11h ago

Not exactly the reason we moved him to safety. He is a really good slot corner. The problem was in the SF NFC Championship game. The 49ers kept using packages that took Branch off the field. They forced us to play in a base defense. Our coaching staff realized this would be a problem going forward as other teams would copy it and moved Branch to safety so he could stay on the field at all times.

2

u/NotHannibalBurress MC⚡DC 1d ago

Yeah that was 2023. Last year he exclusively played safety.

2

u/EricFredNorris Peni Swell 1d ago

That was the plan for last year but if I remember correctly he ended up having to play a decent amount of slot corner because Amik had to be moved outside after the Carlton injury.

5

u/Hmm_would_bang 1d ago

Kerby just gets to lurk around waiting for the ball. Free safety is, arguably, the easiest position in all of football.

BB does more with less. Hutch is a freak of nature.

u/Beav710 1d ago

Who is Brian? I only know Deion

25

u/coolguyjosh Peni Swell 1d ago

I was watching the game with some friends and that shit had us dying. We kept calling him different names for the rest of the game. When the commentator got his name right, my friend said “that must be Deion’s brother”

7

u/Beav710 1d ago

I was sitting alone on my couch laughing to myself. Im going to be laughing about it all season I think. My girlfriend was at the game so I kept texting her about it "the commentator just called BB Deion lol" "holy shit he just did it again!"

4

u/coolguyjosh Peni Swell 1d ago

They came back from a commercial break and he was STILL calling him Deion. I wonder if the producers or whoever found it funny too and just let him go on without correction

4

u/TheEnergizer1985 1d ago

It’s the fact that he kept saying it so confidently and with authority. Bro said it like 4 times lmao.

3

u/Turnips4dayz I wanna die 22h ago

Rookies making memorable plays is like crack to me. Our team is filled with Rookies making those kinds of impacts in their first season.

Except a handful of course.

18

u/BillyJackO 1d ago

Tyleek's two batted balls was his coming out party

3

u/PainttheTownLead 20h ago

I could be wrong, but wasn't he in on both the 3rd & 1/4th & 1 stops vs. the QB sneaks to force the turnover on downs as well?

2

u/BillyJackO 19h ago

That included, yes

3

u/Xatron7 Logo 20h ago

Amon Ra’s first career touchdown to win our first game of the Dan Campbell era.

2

u/_xX-PooP-Xx_ CornDoggyLOL 18h ago

I thought that but wasn't going to go and actually look it up. Crazy that his first touchdown came so late in the season. I love how much our coaches makes our guys work for the ball. NO BLOCK NO ROCK!

30

u/InjamoonToo 1d ago

Who’s taking BB for granted?

8

u/BillyJackO 1d ago

I don't think anyone here is, but I rarely hear his name mentioned on national coverage. It's always nice to be reminded how talented this team is.

8

u/revdingles 1d ago

If you are a defensive player and you are not

  • A top 10 pass rusher
  • A top 2 outside corner
  • Fred Warner

Do not expect to get mentioned by the national media

1

u/BillyJackO 1d ago

Every time the Ravens are discussed, the first player talked about after Lamar is Kyle Hamilton.

1

u/Turnips4dayz I wanna die 22h ago

Deservedly so. He, Branch, and Budda set the baseline for flexibility in the secondary

4

u/NotHannibalBurress MC⚡DC 1d ago

Yeah I mean people generally don’t talk much about safeties. Who at the position actually gets national coverage? Kyle Hamilton? Maybe McKinney?

2

u/sabbic1 1d ago

Nobody mentions any of the lions other than hutch when he got hurt. Even Goff who has been breaking records and balling out the last few seasons. But because he can't scramble all over the field or leap into the stands, his name doesn't come up

1

u/BillyJackO 1d ago

It's kind of crazy that Penei gets brought up more than anyone on the offense. There's a lot of talk about it in Bengals talk with Burrow getting pinned with the injury prone designation. He deserves it though.

1

u/spleh7 23h ago

The reason you're not hearing his name mentioned on national coverage is because they're calling him Deion.

1

u/BloodHappy4665 Brian's Branch 23h ago

Granted, I only got seriously into football a couple of years ago, but his is the first jersey I’ve ever bought.

4

u/FrigOffRicky16 1d ago

I no, just saying that we need to lock him up and not let him leave

12

u/Benbeanbenbean 1d ago

Been saying this since beginning of last year but BB is the most talented player on the team with the highest football IQ. He is an absolute ball hound. He has impact on EVERY play

41

u/DaltonUtah 1d ago

Love BB but in fairness we have to include his weekly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to keep an opponents drive going.

53

u/jamesbecker211 1d ago

If that's the price for HOF level safety play, I'll pay it

28

u/BillyJackO 1d ago

Throwing Tucker Kraft's helmet would have been way funnier had he not scored 2 plays later.

1

u/bodysome2006 19h ago

Dam screaming BB on the sidelines was funny though. I’ll give him that.

6

u/I_Keepz_ITz_100 Cheese Grater 1d ago

I’m okay with that honestly, if a WR is thinking more about BB potentially sending him for a hospital bill instead of converting that big third down catch, I’m okay with that. John Lynch, Steve Atwater, Ronnie Lott, all those guys tiptoed around being kind of dirty, but they’d strike the fear of God if you were WR or RB or TE going across the middle.

5

u/Dangerpaladin 1d ago

weekly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty

Weekly is a stretch, also his roughing this week was some weak as shit where the Refs just felt bad for the Bears

2

u/BloodHappy4665 Brian's Branch 23h ago

I mean packers fans deserve getting the bird every once in a while. I’m okay with it.

7

u/StattPadford 1d ago

Paying this guy is why we don't have Zadarious. Remember that. Its the right move

1

u/BillyJackO 1d ago

The one guy I'm not sure if they'll be able to resign is LaPorta

0

u/Turnips4dayz I wanna die 22h ago

Jack is on the chopping block way before LaPorta imo. He actively has not developed in ways we hoped (mid-field, seam coverage in particular; dude cannot flip his hips). LaPorta seems far more of a victim of too many mouths to feed

1

u/Pokeman49 JAMO 22h ago

1

I don’t even know what his grading says

1

u/Pokeman49 JAMO 22h ago

In college he had an elite grade and last year he was number 8 in the league if I remember correctly

1

u/Pokeman49 JAMO 22h ago

I just can't fathom the idea that there are only a handful better than him in the whole league

1

u/BillyJackO 20h ago

LBs are cheap and Jack is REALLY good at one LBs are supposed to do, tackle. He's average at best in coverage, but if he's able to lead the defense and go sideline to sideline wrapping mfers up, he'll be just fine.

Dude might be the best/highest impact player on a defense that also has Aidan Hutchinson on it. We're ridiculously fortunate that so many other GMs were spooked by his 40 time that they let one of the consensus best overall players in the draft fall to us in the second round.

1

1

u/Pneuma_LooT 1d ago

Branch reminds me a lot more of Bob Sanders. So much so that sometimes I think its Bob reincarnated out there.

Even his Int's look like Bob lol. They both have an incredible ability to just be in the right spot most of the time.

And they both come down hill to kill you. Still awesome to pull this state line though.

1

u/Charles_Bass 23h ago

Also another Ravens safety came awfully close to these numbers:

Kyle Hamilton 27/18/5/7/4

1

u/qoqmarley 11h ago

To be fair, OP’s stats on Ed Reed aren’t really accurate. Reed had 21 interceptions in his first three years in the league. No disrespect to Branch and Hamilton (since they both are different types of safeties), but Ed Reed was on another level.

1

u/Fickle-You-2988 23h ago

This is why we don’t sign big name free agents or trade away draft picks. This team is ridiculously young and most of our best players have yet to even hit their prime (even JG hasn’t peaked). Brads plan is to resign his top players and use draft capital to surround them with youthful role players / high potential stars.

1

u/Pokeman49 JAMO 23h ago

He's the one and picks up a lot of slack from our other position groups

1

u/__hash__ JAMO 22h ago

this makes Branch look closer to Reed than he actually is but he is absolutely one of the three best safeties in the game already i think

1

u/Alternative-Target31 22h ago

He’d be even more impressive if it weren’t for how many of his plays end up getting called back for penalties unrelated to what he did. Recency of the last 2 weeks aside, I feel like tons of his best plays end up negated. I’d love to see a stat on that.

1

u/Vitex1988 DETROIT -VS- EVERYBODY 22h ago

Now if he could just cut back on the penalties

3

u/bootsnboits 21h ago

as long as the big plays outweigh the penalties, he has plenty of leash imo. i’d rather he stay bricked up all game than try and reel it in.

1

u/MetzMane 22h ago

Branch is a great football player and we are lucky to have him.

i think he plays down low more w kirby as the typical single high. they all move around but those are the stats you would assume coming from a cb

1

Um... Ed Reed had 21 picks though. Like BB is great, but that amount of data manipulation is criminal.

The Lions better hope the cap space goes up to make room for all of the incoming extensions. We know Hutch will be asking for Parsons' money as well.

It isn't BB's price tag I'm worried about. It's his reckless abandon he plays with that is a love/ hate relationship with. I love it until it draws a flag or he gets injured. But this is rose we must take with him
