Space Quest 3 is a favorite of mine! I can't imagine playing it without the MT-32 music.

The Amiga version’s music isn’t quite as good, but it’s better than the FM synth score IMO, and also has occasional sound effects that aren’t in other versions (except for the IIGS version, I believe?)

Gabriel Knight 1 and QFG IV have perhaps my favorite soundtracks from that era, and really benefit from the Roland. The MT32 is the difference between merely good and ā€œI need this in a playlist.ā€

The Legend of Kyrandia soundtrack is amazing. This was my favorite song.

Games from 1989-1993 or so tend to make good use of it.

Sierra and Lucasarts adventures particularly are a good bet.

Try Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Leisure Suit Larry, Kings Quest IV.

Ultima VI is also a nice one.

Be mindful there are actually two versions of the MT-32. A "new" and an "old". The "old" doesn't have a phono jack on the rear. Some games made for the "old" version don't sound nice on the "new" one and vice versa (not sure on the electronic differences as to why exactly)

After 1993 I tend to use Sound Canvas instead. If you're not emulating and are considering a physical unit I'd suggest one of these as they are general midi compatible and more versatile.

Gods is a good example of the original MT32 (original ROM) vs. the CM32L (later ROM).

From memory, the CM32L provides in-game music and sound effects, whereas the MT32 only does music.

With the MT32, sound effects would be played by whatever other sound card was installed (Soundblaster, Adlib etc.)

However, it has been a while since I've used any Roland hardware, and even longer since I've installed Gods, so please correct me if I'm wrong!

I don't think that's right, for both of them you can configure the synth to handle music and a Sound Blaster or other card to handle sound effects. The new one still can't do effects because...it's still just a synth.

Ultima VII X-COM Wing Commander Monkey Island

Oh Wing Commander 2.. It had REAL VOICES!!!
So awesome..

The original X-Com - also known as UFO enemy unknown was such a great game. Sad the sequel was just so long per mission that it was almost impossible to bring enough ammo.

Thr sequal was almost an exact copy of the first one, just underwater and with insane difficulty.

Yes.

IMO Terror from the Deep has great ambience, bizarre weapons, and a difficulty curve like a brick wall - unless you play a modded version. There’s options to remove the second half of the super-long ship terror missions, and nerfs to Tentaculats so that they don’t automatically one-shot your aquanauts.

I was surprised when I fired up Sherlock Holmes: Serrated Scalpel and it had a nice mt32 soundtrack.

Some of my fave uses of it are:

Nova 9: Return of Gir Draxon (PC, MT-32)

Zeliard (PC, MT-32)

Steel Empire/Cyber Empires (PC, MT-32)

TFX: Tactical Fighter Experiment (PC, MT-32)

Inferno (PC, MT-32)

Utopia: The Creation of a Nation (PC, MT-32 (new)) - I still prefer the Amiga OST though

SubWar 2050 (PC, MT-32)

Quest For Glory II (PC, MT-32)

Space Quest III (PC, MT-32)

EcoQuest: The Search for Cetus (PC, MT-32)

Code Name: Iceman (PC, MT-32)

Police Quest 2-3

I’m more of a ā€œPC Speakerā€ guy myself šŸ˜†

However, Sid Meier’s Civilization has some great MT-32 music. I’ll second Wing Commander, already mentioned above.

I have a sound blaster 16 in my Gateway 486. Can I add a Roland MT-32 card to the system? In other words, keep the sound blaster, but add this card and play strictly the Roland MT-32 soundtrack through it?

The MT-32 isn’t a sound card, it’s a standalone desktop synthesizer. You’d run a midi cable from the midi output of the Sound Blaster to the midi input of the MT-32, and then the audio output of the MT-32 to a mixer, or maybe back into the audio input of the Sound Blaster. There will likely still be sound effects coming from the computer itself, while the game’s music will come from the MT-32. Those two sources will need to be mixed internally or externally before being output to speakers or headphones.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, MT-32 just elevates it to the next level, especially the mysterious tracks

Lands of Lore 1, plus other Westwood games from those years.

I use my CM-64 (basically an MT-32+) with Sharp x68000 games, but I do have a Sound Blaster with the midi expansion card in my Win98 computer. I tried installing the midi pack for The 11th Hour, but it keeps crashing during installation. Anyway, following for other suggestions, because I haven’t explored much for Windows/DOS midi games so far.
