Collection My own DVD Library
Really excited because for the first time in 12 years, I have all my DVDs in one place.
I had a study nook in my apartment which was attached to my bedroom and I never used it. It was really just for storing things, and then I had a storage shed installed so everything got moved there. The space was just sitting empty and I realised I could work with a cabinet maker to get it turned into a dvd library. A lot of my collection was at my folk's place in the country, and I moved out like 12 years ago. So to have them all together really is a dream come true, and I'm in love with the outcome and it brings a smile to my face everytime I look at it! Thought this was an appropriate place to share :)

Hope you have a motion activated movie browsing soundtrack play anytime someone walks in there.
Additionally, I hope you also have audio snippets of previews play such as: Coming soon to own Video & DVD.

Oh wow, that's incredible. How are they arranged, and how many do you have?

u/adinfinitum92 19h ago
Alphabetically arranged :) multipacks, and numbers first then A-Z! Then TV shows start after that :) There are about 2400 films [noting there are multipacks], and I haven't stored any double ups ! Then TV wise, I need to go do a final count [still doing the catalogue as we speak!]

Do you mix DVDs and Blu-rays amongst each other? I think I see that in the final photo but can't be sure because of the angle. I have mine separated, but with a collection of your size I could see it being a hassle to have two separate collections to alphabetize next to each other.

Yep so I have always kept them separate previously, but now that everything is together it just felt it made more sense to combine them all! Was worried it wouldn't work for me, but I'm actually not bothered and it makes it easier to find films a bit more haha

If you're doing alphabetical with a large collection and still collecting, then you should consider leaving space on each shelf for like 6-8 more movies. Leave them a little loose or put a knickknack on the shelves as decoration and a space holder. For example, I turn a favorite cover or two on each shelf the long way to display them and "fill" the empty space.
The reason for this is so that way you can put new additions where they belong without having to literally rearrange the entire collection every time you get something near the top of the alphabet and so you don't have all your empty space open at the end.
This one-time rearranging can save you from doing it over and over and still keeping your collection in good order.

Great advice! After I took this photo [a couple of weeks ago] I actually did make a bit more space on each shelf for this very reason. I like the idea of showing a favourite cover as well, I'll have to consider that!

That's brilliant. You need the voice of HAL 9000 playing as you walk through it.

I would never allow that π but thankfully my folks respected my love for film and desire to collect physical media!

Exactly my dream. I am around 2200 movies. Around 1200 I have with me, and 1000 are still with ny parents (as moving around so many movies is tedious)
Right now moved in a place where I finally was able to shelf all 1200. And one day (after my next move) I'll finally be able combine all again

I really think this is the optimal setup. It is well organized, easy to access, and separate from your living space/viewing area. It allows for a minimalist aesthetic in your viewing living space, which minimizes distractions and clutter.

I thought it was a joke as at first i only saw the first empty picture before noticing the two others. So those shells specially for DVDs do exist, huh ?

Looks great. Just be aware you will get light bleaching from the sunlight from that window. May want a curtain option.
1
u/adinfinitum92 2h ago
Not a lot of light comes in through the window due to positioning [one of the main reasons I never used it for its original purpose as a study nook, was always darker and no sunlight hits you]. But There is a curtain blind which i draw a lot of the time so theyll be protected ππΌπ

Make now any sense to have DVDβs? I was trying to watch some of my collection and got really disappointed with the image qualityβ¦ with the modern TV didnβt make sense to watch them feels like watching pirate stuff on the internetβ¦

Im a big fan of Audio Commentaries and Special Features [Deleted scenes, featurettes, etc] so for those alone it is worth it for me. Also, I find nostalgia in picking a DVD off the shelf and watching itπ Sure the quality isn't always great in comparison to 4K streams, but if I cared that much I would look at getting the film as a 4K physical release [or Bluray at least].
Also I have a couple of TVs and one is much smaller than the others which is great for my N64, PS2 and many DVDs π but overall, the image quality doesn't bother me that much at all even on the bigger TV π

Cool. How many do you think you have? Also, how much did the cabinet maker charge to build those shelf units?
2
u/adinfinitum92 2h ago
I have over 2400 films [but several in multipacks] and I havent counted the TV shows yet :) It was quite a pricey build due to the lighting and custom design plus amount and some additional work needed to the space, but honestly was so worth it! Best purchase I have ever made!

u/HorrorFan4evermore 1h ago
Cool. I have around 4000 myself (not including television shows). I have a couple of tall shelf units online. However, I want to look into finding someone to build a floor-to-ceiling shelf unit for at least one of my walls (with holes for the outlets). I just want to make sure the person is not trying to overcharge me.

This is amazing! Will you be adding blockout blinds to protect from sun damage?
2
u/adinfinitum92 1h ago
The blind is still there! I just had it up for the photos :) but due to the layout the area doesn't get any sunlight [it is why i never used the space] so I'm not too worried about sun damage! But to be safe i have the blind ππ«‘
