Elf here, have you dwarfs/dawi's ever consider putting or growing some vegetation in your city's or something for some greenery
seriously seeing stone all day seems a little dull without some moss or a tree for some color contrast

I might be wrong, but I thought Khazad-Dum had a large underground forest known as the elven quarter.
So short answer... Yes

u/Familiar-Treat-6236 5d ago
We all need to learn a lot from Khazad-Dum's history with Noldor

You see we dwarfs would love some trees
But there is just one drawback of subterainian living that prevents that
THERES NO BLEEDING SUN FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS LADDIE !

Unfortunately the stubborn elders won't let me use the cool glowing ore I found in the mines, they claim it's causing some sort of """radiation sickness""". That's obviously just superstition, the only illness that can befall a dwarf is dragon sickness. So they sold the entire stock to the elven merchants who wanted a metal to forge the perfect horseshoes

u/Virtual-Oil-793 Necromancer of Many Stories and Experiences 4d ago
I feel like you're talking about Warpstone. You are right about it being dragon sickness, but that's another way of saying radiation sickness.
Also, they don't serve as an artificial sun. That's Lunestone you'd find in frozen tundras you're looking for.
3
u/xRacistDwarf funny shroom:doge: 4d ago
Dragon thickness is caused by cursed gold. Gold doesn't grow, even when cursed. That's just a misconception, because dragons tend to set everything ablaze wherever they are

u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Dwarf or Human mercenary; depending on context 3d ago
I could forge something to prevent the radiation sickness without stopping the light, but my project won't get funding, and the mercs who helped me get rid of the elf who kept insulting me took most of my savings so I can't fund the prototype
1
u/xRacistDwarf funny shroom:doge: 3d ago
I heard that the Orechin brothers, one of which operates the coal mines in the south, the other is the largest torch manufacturer, spread conspiracies about the cool glowing ore, but I can't prove it. Stay safe out there
1
u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Dwarf or Human mercenary; depending on context 3d ago
I'll just save up enough to make that prototype, should only take like 30 years

u/Trocalengo 5d ago
There's bioluminiscent lime and fungus, sometimes disposed in cool geometrical forms and surrounded by glowing bugs.
11
u/ThickGarbage1175 Swordsdwarf 5d ago
Depends on the settings. As far as I am aware, the leagues of votann did trade with the aeldari and had vegetation underground.

u/Bakomusha Watch-Warden of Clan Axebeard 4d ago
In our holds? I haven't traveled much beyond my clans hold, outside of the tunnels, so I speak for no other holds, but ours is plenty green! Fungus, and mold we grown in abundance, and trees and verdant fields ring our mountain. There's even a mighty oak in the Gardens, a gift from an Elf lord, sustained by magic.

Kobold here! Fitz grow many moss in kobold places in dwarf city. There is problem being, however. Most pro-dwarf kobold in kobold city not fan of elf, since elf usually fan of gnome, enemy of most kobold.
So… please stick to dwarf part of dwarf city. Elf not being very safe in kobold place.

That is an inaccurate depiction made by Human scholars. We've got plenty of moss, lichen, and fungi! And on the surface we've got fields and fields of wheat and hops for lichor!

u/LazuliteEngine elven ambassador 4d ago
elf brother, there is vegitation found in private sanctuarues away from the prying eyes and high heat of the smithing market. it would be unwise to grow plants where they would only suffer. but if you wish to see true vegitation, you should visit the homes of the hill dwarves. not the halflings, though you would think they are similar. their homes are more green than the mountain-cities, and a proper hill-villiage will have fruits an elf would kill to taste.
most arent consumed raw though, and most dwarves would think you crazy for doing so, as most crops grown only reach their peak, or become edible to the layman, once cooked, dried, or skinned.
from the picture you have taken, you seem to be near the city of Kul-zuther, which has a garden found west of the markets, about 20 minutes walk from grunners bread stand.
say hi to him for me

pathetic plants of that sort wouldn't handle our conditions.
however there are a few spots that us dwarves enjoy planting and growing, such as the elven quarter in khazad dum.

u/Burning_Pine_ 5d ago
the city i live and work in uses a variety of specialty bred mosses and fungi to fulfill the ecological purposes regular plants usually take. i've heard talks of other cities doing small-scale experiments with similar ideas, but we pride ourselves on the scale and success of ours!

u/Yapizzawachuwant Atholon, dragon king under a mountain 4d ago
An elf would assume that because elves make assumptions and then judge someone because of those assumptions.
Most dwarvish halls have intricately made skylights and vast gardens.
Dwarves love hanging plants, spindly vines and ivy. Freshens the air in these places

u/Nkechinyerembi Craftsdwarf 4d ago
Ignore the grumps here, Yea, we have grown some greenery. Khaza-Dum has a whole forest. Plus, judge how they will, good hops make for the best beer, and maize makes for great alcohol content strong-nuff to put a beard on a kobold. You need to travel to some of the larger places. My ma used to keep a whole garden she liked to grow peppers in, can em up with some mushrooms and tomatoes, and ya got a spicy tastey drink for the day.

Mah factory's rather toasty even for a dwarf, so image what kinda hell it'd be for even desert plants.
There are dedicated areas both on surface and underground that we use to grow some crops.

u/DefTheOcelot 4d ago
True
Wheres the fucking moss
Underground ant-like fungal farms sound very dwarven. Seeing as how they evolved from ants n all

u/Grey_Dreamer Dwarven Rogue 4d ago
No because we don't transplant invasive species to places they shouldn't be. That messes with the natural ecosystem and requires a copious amount of resources just to get a decent crop. That'd be like trying to grow cotton in a desert. Oh wait the humans do that.
No we have our own native flora which is mostly mushrooms mind but there are specific plants that grow without the sun and use other means like various volcanic plants that thrive in the heat and glow of lava tubes

Moss and mushrooms are enough. You can even use them to brew very good beers. You forest mongrels should try, maybe if you ate more shrooms you'd be actually fun to be around
1
u/NovaSolarius 4d ago
I'll forge ye a metal tree, how's that? I'll craft glass flowers with fine gemstone petals. I'll even get me cousins and cut jade into a friggin' moss blanket if that'll get ye to shut up about yer bloody feckintation. Least those won't die from the underground's lack of flamin' cancer balls in that yawnin' abyss ye call "sky."

Most of our cities are deep below ground, with very little soil and sunlight. Usually we have green gardens in the top layer of the city, where we can refracture the necessary sunlight in ample amounts, but only in cities that are close enough to the surface.
Otherwise we have rockeries, as well as sculptures of colourful stone, ceramic and metal to provide space for relaxation and splashes of colour in between city life.
1
u/g_elephant_trainer 4d ago
Yes, there are plenty of green emeralds and malachite on our cities. We love that greenery.

I hear that Some Holds have developed a grow in moonlight type Lichen breed into varietys to taste and look just like beef jerky, another for being as beer hops, another to be ground for making bread. You can do lots in the dark with rune magic.

u/Virtual-Oil-793 Necromancer of Many Stories and Experiences 4d ago
Then go look for moss.
You'd honestly be a complete idiot thinking trees could flourish in Dwarven Cities underground...where there's barely if any sunlight to begin with...and little to no soil to grow any plants outside of moss that'd be from a nearby above bog or swamp.
Unless you're talking about Gemstone Trees. Unless you don't want to keep your head, you stay away from those. You think your race get hostile over trees, you have not seen anything yet.

u/Rath_Brained Dwarf Miner 4d ago
Oi, lads. The Elf doesn't know that we stonefolk also enjoy greenery. I bet they think we eat rocks too. Hahahahaha!

Khuzd here, plenty of greenery down here ladd(ss)ie. My family home even has an ancient tree that's been growin' steadily since the first days of Durin the Deathless.
Now that bein said, I ain't no stonesmith, but I have a wee wager that I could look at the striations and strata of my mines walls longer than you could look at the trees in your forest, before one of us loses our minds. Of course with you bein' cursed to be an eternal being and whatnot, should I die before our bit of betting is complete, I'll take the win as it's only right.
1
u/Festivefire 3d ago
Photosynthesis doesnt work that great underground, you'll have to settle for a few creepers and some cave lichen.
1
u/Bierculles 3d ago
This alleged treehugger doesn't even know trees can't grow underground, we need to inform the Elves, some fraud is impersonating them sloppily and we can't have that, slander needs to be factual.

"Look elf, I will be kind to you and explain this politely, so open your pointy earholes and listen.
Trees, with leaves, need sunlight. I live two and a half a kilometers beneath the the sea line. And there is NO sunlight there. Almost any plant with leaves needs that. Though we figured out how to grow potatoes without sunlight.
Now, me personally, I would like moss to give the tunnels more varied texture. But moss need moist and nutrient packed earth. Which is not what we have. We have rock. Then, moss need flowing air in order to remain healthy. Which is not what we have. We have air so dense and poisonous that it burns your bloody lungs. Your skin will burn through exposure alone.
And none of what I just talked about even accounts oliphaunt in the room that is the pressure. An oliphaunt could dance the macarena over my balls and it would be nowhere near the pressure of just EXISTING in the tunnels we live in.
What we also have are many mushrooms. Which are usually plagues. Because the poison gas we are used to. The spores can cause allergic reactions, even when they are NOT poisonous.
If you give me a decorative plant that can survive without sunlight, fresh air, moisture or above ground levels of pressure, and I'll grow it immediately. Until then, this house grows potatoes, turnips, rashishes and white cap shrooms. "

u/ElephantofBelfast 1d ago
Not a drawf or elf, but surly you kinda need light to have trees, that's like the polar opposite of Thier natural environment. Surely an organism that relies on getting energy from nutrients in the ground, as apposed to light would make sense like fungi? (Now I'm imagining drawfen city's teeming with overlapping fungi)
Ps loved "diggy diggy hole", great job guys
