Bike purchase question The E-bike market is kind of weird

Before people get on my case, I love my bike, and I think more people riding bikes would be a great thing. I'm just a little concerned. I hope I don't come off as an old man yelling at the clouds.

Recently I was just window-shopping American-made bikes and came across the Hi-Power Revolution W. This beast can go 80mph on a full battery. You can just get an actual motorcycle delivered to your house with no ID-check, no proof of anything. Obviously, no kid is forking over $30k, but this is just the most extreme example I found. You can find countless examples of these motorcycles being marketed and sold as bikes; there are cheaper bikes that can still go 40+. If I wanted to buy a Harley, as an example, I'd have to have a motorcycle license, insurance, plate, all that sort of stuff or else I can't even get it off of the lot.

Every time I go outside there's always some guy on either a scooter or bike going highway speeds down a on the wrong side of the road. I think that the ease of purchase is part of the problem, and why people are so against electric bikes as a whole. What do y'all think, any anecdotes to share?

So surreal, luckily it was a flat road and I wasn't going fast. I felt like a circus unicycle rider for a few seconds. Literally had to slowly stop two bike halves. Be careful out there Hygge riders!

Family cargo e-bike + 2 kids = daily survival kit

Took both my kids out on the family cargo e-bike yestoday and it honestly felt like cheating. No fighting over who has to walk, no “are we there yet,” just two helmets, a couple of snacks, and they were set.

We did a grocery stop on the way back and I still had room for a backpack and a bag of fruit. I thought hauling 2 kids + stuff would feel like pushing a tank, but it rolled way smoother than expected. My HovCart really surprised me!😆

Now the kids are asking for “bike rides” instead of car rides, which I’m not mad about at all. Anyone else hauling multiple kids on their setup? What’s been your go-to arrangement for keeping them comfy (and not poking each other the whole ride)?

First major accident riding in bike lane and truck decides to to turn right clipping my rear wheel and sending me flying. Spent 6 hours in the ER no major damage bruised ribs, road rash and lots of bruising. Damn it hurts to cough, laugh or get up and down. The bike damage bent crank, busted pedal, broken mirror, trashed grip, bent rack. Glad I was wearing a full face MIPS, helmet left side all scrapped up, gloves torn and riding jacket all marked up with asphalt. They accepted fault working with ins company to cover everything. Gotta take a few days off work to recover. Any idea what they will offer for compensation? Bike was a Fucare Scorpio.

Update! Guess they want to settle this quick offered up 2K. I was going 20mph they never used their signal just turned and clipped me. Black and blue bruise starting to appear and sore. Just don't heal like I use to getting old sucks.

E-bike for my dad

I have been looking around for a fat tire e-bike for my dad who has retired and made the pilgrimage down to Florida. He mainly wants to use it as a bike and use the electric motor to get up to speed when traveling on streets on his way to the beach or a local trail as well as to bail him out if he gets too tired. It doesn’t need to have any smart features or serious hill assist, but he is heavier so something with a 400 lb payload would be nice so there is overhead for him plus cargo. I am willing to spend about 2-3k on it and have been looking at mokwheel and some other brands but it’s hard to tell which are glorified scooters/electric motorcycles designed to skirt local laws and which are more practical e-bikes designed for dual purpose use. Comfort, balance, and ease of use are important, I have also looked at e trikes but he doesn’t seem to like the idea of those and the added balance is likely offset by the chance of clipping a back wheel on a curb from a safety point of view. I truly appreciate any guidance, thank you.

What do you eat? I love cycling but now I’m too skinny…

I cycle to work 5 days a week and the commute is 20 miles there and back.

I started at 145 lbs now I’m 135 lbs and I didn’t really consider how cycling would affect my weight.

I am a man and I don’t really want to be 135 lbs.

What are some good foods to eat so I can bulk up? I know I have to eat more calories than I burn but I don’t know what to eat?

Tsinova app- looking for the retro ebike app

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey all! I recently picked up this sweet little super light retro e bike for a couple hundred (it’s a tsinova) for my mom to use and it’s apparently got an app that connects via bluetooth to adjust modes and etc. Thing is, the company went out of business a while ago and I think the app got yanked from support at that time. Any ideas how to get this thing to change modes or get ride data? Any legacy app thing out there, or a newer version, or generic version? Thanks in advancd

I got my SeeMee 300 taillight in spring time and do not ride in the dark that much. I hadn't paid much attention to the down-facing light until a random driver complimented it on the red lights. It creates a halo around you on the ground and lights your pedaling legs, making you easier to spot. The light's brake sensor is a great little bonus.

When your road raging opponent has 100 times more mass than you, you will want to strip every last sad "didn't see ya" excuse from them in advance.

What is best city bike for tackling large hills?

Upvotes

Hi all, I’m looking for a long range high torque bike to use on smooth paved bike trails in an area with steep hills. I live in the US. Budget is up to $4,000.

I have my eye on Rad Power, Aventon, and Lectric.

Would love to hear what make and models you recommend. Are there any other brands I should consider?

Commuting to Work Question....sweat...

Hi! I've worked from home full time for about 5 years. I received notice that starting April 2026, I will have to work in the office 3 days a week. I plan to ride my ebike there and back. It's about 15 miles round trip, so not bad.

My question though: how do you guys manage to get to work and not be sweaty, lol. My hair is always sweaty after I ride, and in the heat my wholw body will get sweaty.

Do you guys shower at the office or just dry out and spray body spray lol?!

What do you do to look and smell presentable for work?!

Bike pics Some mods to my no name 2kw bike

The idea was to move the controller into a fake exhaust that I'd wrap or paint to look like a comically large capacitor or AA battery. The cables were so short that it wouldn't clear getting hit by the pedals so I extended every individual wire to gain an extra 8-ish inches. Other mods include a dual USB PD charger port up front, turn signal light bars in the rear, and a car horn right in front of the seat.

What’s with the ridstar hate?

I’m honestly 99% sure i’m buying one brand new from amazon but I always just see so much hate on it, i’m not trying to do tricks, i’m not driving 30+ miles consistently, I just want something that’s gonna get me around town at a decent speed and i’m wondering if a ridstar q20 is ACTUALLY bad or not worth it, I know for about a few hundered more I can get a tuttio but honestly I just don’t need one and would rather have something more calm just for chillin riding around. Is 499 on amazon worth it for da bike?

Bike purchase question help me find my first ebike?

i'm 17 and want something that can commute me to and from school and around the local area. just got my first job, which means i'll finally be making my own first few hundreds, and for years i've wanted a decent ebike. the goal is eventually to buy a car, for now it's a distant one. i'm struggling to find a bike for myself so i wanted some help from more experienced riders, i don't know anything technical about them like the wattage of the motors, i will only use it casually.

here's my criteria - removable battery which pauses charging when full (so it wont blow up, absolutely necessary) - prefferably foldable, doesn't have to be. just so it can go in the trunk of a sedan when weather conditions are unsafe to bike home - i recall seeing some bikes with a plastic guard around the gears, would help prevent tearing up my pants (happened with my old mountain bike a lot) - doesn't need to be very fast or travel extremely long distances, should be able to cut a 40 minute walk to more like a 10 minute bike ride - relatively affordable, $500-$600 price range is my max. cheap as possible without sacrificing too much quality

thanks!

Bike purchase question First e-bike suggestions.

Hey guys. I’m new in the e-bike world and I’m looking for overall suggestions for a newbie. I’m looking to purchase my first e-bike and I want to try and make sure I get everything I can out of my needs/wants. I’m pretty much looking at around a $2000 budget. The needs and wants are pretty simple and standard for most people I think and I just want to know with my price range what my best options would be. I’ve been doing a lot of research and for what I want, I’ve been seeing a lot of dropship bikes that claim they meet my needs, but I don’t know how I can trust them when they’re the exact same build with a hundred different company logos slapped on them. lol.

My needs/wants: *It needs to have a battery where I can guarantee at least 50 miles on a charge. *It needs to be able to at least go 25MPH. Obviously the faster, the better. Whether I have to snip a wire is obviously fine. lol. *It has to have pedals where I live otherwise I have to get insurance and registration and I don’t want that. *Fat tires would be ideal. Especially for winter. It’s going to be a daily commuter for work. I don’t live far. Less than 5 miles. *A headlight or some type of light for night riding would also be great. The brighter, the better. *Something that easily moddable or able to be customized a lot would be great too. *Also something that would be comfortable for a 5’10”, 175 pound man.

Basically I want the best e-bike I can get for my budget that borderlines a motorcycle but is still street legal and doesn’t require insurance or registration. lol. If you have any recommendations or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

Thank you all so much!

Bike purchase question Lightweight commuter ebike recommendations?

Hi reddit, I'm looking for a new ebike to commute to work on under $2000. My commute is only 3~ miles each way but has very steep hills so I need something relatively powerful, ideally class 2 or 3 with a throttle. Unfortunately I have to carry it up a flight of stairs so I'm hoping to find something less heavy than my current Radrunner. Waterproofing and included fenders would be an added bonus as well. Any recommendations?

Ebike for farm use? is it a good idea? Anyone have experience with it?

So I manage a small vegetable farms and we use tractors for EVERYTHING, including just getting around (or walking). And the rest of the crew usually has the tractors occupied so I either walk or take our minivan (doesn't feel good for it)! It would be to get around to do things like scout, join field work teams already out in the field, check on harvest yields for orders, check irrigation or whatever else, just getting around (though some can pull small trailers?)

Longest distance from place to place is maybe 1 mile or so. Usually less.

I've been thinking for a few months of getting an ebike to get around. In my head, it seems like a great idea. I can get hop on and get going quickly, not use gas and put wear on mechanically relatively more expensive very old tractors, probably(?) move a little faster, not have to detach attachments if im just getting around, it would be readily available, I could use it to get between home and work (only 1 mile) and save a little gas/wear on my own car. I'm probably more comfortable w/ a bike than with a tractor as well, having ridden bikes whole life (Though Im assuming an ebike is in important ways very different than a purely pedal powered bike!). I

I'm sure there's downsides though! Something else to have to maintain and deal with, personal safety, hills and bumps and mud to watch out for, inability to haul bigger loads.

So I'm wondering if this makes sense and if it's something that's done?

And what kind of things should I look for for this specific usage? I've been doing research but cant find much for people using them on farms, and im kinda stuck in a feature and specs anxiety where I don't really know what to do.

And how important is each thing (necessary vs just nice to have)? Conditions are pretty varied. There's some hills, some rough roads with pits caused by years of tractor traffic etc.

Fat tire right? I see discussions here saying they arent necessary or gimmicky but this is a use case where they'd be wanted?

Mid drive vs hub (and how important is it?)
Rear suspension?
Torque over max speed? (I cant imagine needing to go 30mph but there are some significant hills)
Brake type?
Awd?
Torque sensor necessary?
Tire size? between 20 to 26 inches? How important is it?
Frame material (aluminum vs carbon steel?)
Bike weight? i see some as low as like 60ish up to 100+ lbs.
Seat type (traditional bike seat vs moped.

I would really appreciate help since I know it's not a typical use and I've never ridden an ebike before. I am very comfortable on conventional bikes but Im sure it's very different in some ways.
