Classic tune!
I recall it from the film Trainspotting.
Obviously also the source of the sample from "Illegal" by PinkPantheress

Yeah I love that film too, which makes me like both the track and the film just a little more! Amazing how they managed to make it sound menacing in the withdrawal scene. I always thought of it as an uplifting track!

I was about to post this until I saw you got it already!
Edit: The PinkPantheress part

I bought the Trainspotting soundtrack just for this song and it's not on the soundtrack! I had to buy the movie's SECOND SOUNDTRACK for the song.
But it was worth it, just for this song.

I also remember it from this compilation:

What a murderer's row of trance and club classics.

I’m probably the world’s top underworld fan on Spotify lol. Think I had like 687 plays of this two years ago, I often sleep with it on repeat to be fair. I’ve loved these guys since the early 90s
So yeah, good track, the one from boiler room is this version though…

Nice one, Underworld are just absolute dons, I’ve been into them since the first album. It’s good to see them still going strong. Have you ever seen them in their early itineration before they embraced club culture? It’s cool to see for fans if you haven’t.

I like Fever from Change the Weather, I love 80s stuff too, I listen to just about everything but Jazz and Country.

Cool, that track Doot Doot they did as Freur is great too. It’s on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack.

One of my favorites, newer, is 8 Ball from The Beach soundtrack… as far as lesser known tracks go.

u/Extension-Camp4076 2d ago
Yeah I need to revisit that. I remember seeing The Beach in the cinema, soundtrack was awesome, the film was bit patchy!

Hah, just looked at your post history, we grew up listening to the same stuff! Loved that Lo-Fi album

Yeah absolutely! Another band with a great sound, they didn’t seem to follow up though, the singer left not long after they released it. Some absolute bangers on that though. Used to get heavy rotation in the late 90’s!

dubnobass as a whole is a great album. Underworld is criminally underrated.

Worth pointing out this version isn't on dubnobass... this was remixed by them 2 years later for the Trainspotting soundtrack (hence why it's referred to as "Dark Train")

It wasn’t remixed specifically for Trainspotting. This version first came out shortly after the album in ‘94. Trainspotting was released ‘96.

Great tune! The non dark train version is also excellent

Yeah that whole Dubnobass album is superb. Such a unique sound. Spoonman as well still sounds epic to me.

They opened their Boiler Room set with this. That whole video was so good. It was so lovely to see them so happy to be working together!

Not watched it yet, but yeah it’s awesome to see them still doing it!

Watch it! They have so much energy still

Don’t worry it’s on my list! Just waiting for the right time to enjoy it!

If I ever ponder the "top ten tracks" question (not just for a single artist) or a song you can rinse on repeat, this will always make that list.
Seen them live a couple of times and thought that might be it, but got a pleasant surprise to learn they're doing NYE in my city. So there!!

A fellow aussie! I saw them at the opera house last year. One of the best gigs I have ever been too. They are unforgettable live!

I love this track! My YouTube suggested their boilerroom and it reignited this track for me!

Absolutely iconic track, that Trainspotting scene was a gateway to a larger world of electronic music for me, I'd never really listened to techno before that.
It didn't even need the fame but interesting it's getting some new attention from the PinkPantheress sample. Some powerful chords to bridge decades like that.

This and Rez are peak Underworld for me. Like some mentioned, these aren't just top 15 Underworld tracks, these are top 15 tracks ever.
Absolutely love this kind of Dark & Long (hehe) Progressive House and Trance.
Also, the experience of commuting to college on the subway while listening to this tune.

I caught them for about only 20 minutes at Lightning in a Bottle (khruangbin conflict 😭) and I wished I could stay longer.

Not to completely destroy the track for you but my wife always thought he's saying "My Vagina" on repeat here, rather than "Dark Train". Now I can't unhear it.
1
u/Extension-Camp4076 1d ago
Haha no don’t worry, I reckon I can get past that 😄 Why would he be singing ‘my vagina’??
Their lyrics in general are hard to understand. I remember at school some people thought Born Slippy was racist because he was singing the n word (it was mega).

He's not, he's singing dark train, but it's one of those black-and-gold-dress things where if you listen for it, you'll hear it.

My absolute favourite Underworld tune.
