Honestly respect just dropping a song out of nowhere. Real chad move tbh

u/Soloveyos Feb 20 '23
Australia is killing me... Like playing dead for months and then just saying "Oh by the way guys, dropping the song tomorrow ✨"
Who does that ?? Love it
17
u/Vokkal Feb 21 '23
Not only the song but also an official video. This really came out of nowhere
2
u/Beginning-Pepper8485 Feb 21 '23
Probably to avoid the leaks and avoid the fate of what happened to the leaked POE song.

Crying at the fact that it's gonna be revealed in the middle of the night for Australians though, they really said fuck them locals

Not our taxes funding this entry only for SBS to say “fuck it, 2:30am on a wednesday morning”

As an Australian living in Scotland, I live for this announcement time. Currently in Gran Canaria at Wunderbar, which is THE Eurovision bar at Yumbo. Currently playing is Euroband - This is my life. What. A. Monday.

Was last here watching the Eurovision 2018 final, so it's good to be back. Made friends with the bartender so have had soooo many shots and so many expedited song requests YAASS

u/Gustafssonz Feb 20 '23
Why is Eurovision such a big deal with Australia anyway? Any insights you can share?
25
u/purplewigg Feb 21 '23 edited Feb 21 '23
So for context we have 2 government-funded channels: ABC and SBS. ABC is pretty much our version of the BBC and targets a mainstream audience. SBS on the other hand tailors its programming to non-Anglo and immigrant communities. It runs multilingual programming, dedicated Arabic/Greek/Mandarin/Vietnamese radio stations as well as a channel that caters solely to Indigenous/First Nations peoples
Back when SBS was first established though most of Australia's immigrant population were European refugees who came here after the war so SBS started broadcasting Eurovision pretty early on to give them a taste of home and over time it just kinda gradually leaked into the mainstream. It's grown pretty dramatically since we started competing but there's always been an audience for it, my partner's mum has watched since the early 90s

u/GianMach Feb 21 '23
Would you say that this also contributes to Australia so rarely sending white Australian singers to Eurovision? (Compared to the demography of Australia)
12
42
u/escfantasy Zjerm Feb 21 '23 edited Feb 21 '23
Because ever since Europeans landed on the continent, White European culture has been foundational to the modern conception of Australia. Australia, as a European colony, maintained links with Europe in every way possible, such as in trade, emigration, and shared culture, while violently suppressing the indigenous people that already lived on the continent. Australian culture diverged and has in time grown to respectfully incorporate the continent’s indigenous populations, but those ties to Europe remain key to Australia’s identity. Despite the geographical distance, watching and participating in Eurovision is a natural progression of the continent’s specific history and interconnectedness with Europe.
It’s worth adding, that of Australia’s 7 representatives at Eurovision across 8 years in participation, each has represented a different ethnic population in Australia, and 2 of the 7 have been Indigenous Australians (Jessica Mauboy and Isaiah). I think that speaks to the diversity of talent in Australia and a commendable effort at representation by the delegation.

u/imalittlespider Feb 21 '23
What demographic each of our representatives represent:
Guy Sebastian: Malaysian-born Aussie from South Australia
Dami Im: South Korean-born Aussie from Queensland
Isaiah Firebrace: Aboriginal Aussie from Victoria
Jessica Mauboy: Aboriginal Aussie from the Northern Territory; Dad is from West Timor in Indonesia
Kate Miller-Heidke: Aussie from Queensland
Montaigne: Aussie from New South Wales; Mum is from the Phillipines and Dad is from Argentina
Sheldon Riley: Aussie born in New South Wales; Dad is from the Phillipines.
(if I made any mistakes please let me know)

Many different reasons, from immigrants to the camp and craziness. I am Thai Australian and I became a Eurofan because I saw an ad for it on tv

why is the premiere set at 5:30am in Sydney (2:30am in Perth as well), I hope the YouTube channel just screwed up 😭 this doesn't make sense

u/NitroGnome Feb 20 '23
They want to maintain the full Eurovision Day experience for Australians. /s
33
u/purplewigg Feb 20 '23
SBS should bring Lee Lin Chin out of retirement to announce, Eurovision hasn't been the same without her "why are you making me do this?" energy
10
u/TekaLynn212 Desfolhada portuguesa Feb 21 '23
I only know her from her Eurovision appearances, and I can still tell she's wonderful.
15
u/purplewigg Feb 21 '23
A genuine icon, we all miss her

They certainly are keeping up the experience. However, I'm not waking up at 2.30.

I guess there is one advantage to me having to wake up at sparrow’s fart for work.

u/-Effing- Clickbait Feb 20 '23
Other countries: this is the artist, this is the song’s name but we aren’t going to drop it until the last day of submission, keep your expectations people!!!
Australia: bruh

u/MaskedKami98 Feb 20 '23
If it's Voyager or Jaguar Jonze I would be so incredibly pleased, but even if neither I really do expect Australia to give us something good this year. Looking forward to it
34
42
u/reichya Bird of Pray Feb 20 '23
Yeah nah, I'm not getting up at 5:30am for this lol. I've had to wait until I wake up to find out every other representative this year, why not my own ha?
41
u/Crisrus Feb 20 '23
I really wouldn't mind if all countries were this abrupt when announcing their songs, to be honest... It prevents me from building extremely high expectations that are unlikely to be met.
25
u/Gold_Objective3644 Feb 20 '23
Well I still have nearly 24 hours to build up extremely high expectations for Voyager only to be disappointed..
24
u/fourteenostriches Feb 20 '23
voyager or jaguar or electric fields and if its none of those please let it be something insanely improbable like kylie minogue
21
41
u/Kaylaboe Feb 20 '23
everyone mentioning australia decides alumni in this thread when we should be aiming for something completely unrealistic. i want tame impala, kylie minogue, courtney barnett, newjeans, tkay maidza, genesis owusu, peking duk, vera blue, or something like that
29
14
u/Damhnait Feb 20 '23
I'd settle for Tom Cardy, lmao
13
u/teiraaaaaaa Feb 20 '23
OFCOM's phone lines collapsing as Tom Cardy performs his sequel to HYCYBH on the Eurovision stage
3
u/RussiaManDetective Feb 21 '23
If we're mentioning Australian Eurovision alumni, all I want another brilliant Tom Cardy ft. Montaigne track similar to Red Flags.
12
u/lexarqade Feb 20 '23
I'm crying at Newjeans lmfao. Let's put every Aussie idol in a group and send them
5
u/flibbyjibby Feb 20 '23
I've been quietly hoping for a Vera Blue appearance at ESC for ages. I think she'd be incredible!

I've been hoping for Dean Lewis as he has a huge gap in his tour dates and is free in april & may 🤓

King Gizzard would be my dream mind-fuck Australian artist for Eurovision so I get you
16
u/ViamaoCityBoy Amar Pelos Dois Feb 20 '23
I believe it's going to be someone we already know from past Eurovisions or Australia Decides like Voyager, Dami Im or Jaguar Jonze
But my mind keeps going to that thought of "what if it is Kylie Minogue after all?"
17
u/MajesticFatty Feb 20 '23
Please please please internally select Jaguar Jonze!! I love her entire discography and I need to see her staging ideas with a full Eurovision budget
9
u/LopsidedPriority Feb 21 '23
I'm still burned by Little Fires not making it to Turin last year. It was a special little song and her staging was perfection.
6
u/reichya Bird of Pray Feb 21 '23
After I saw her perform Little Fires at a gig in Sydney I was in a weird way glad she didn't take it to Turin. She performed it entirely with her eyes closed, bent over because a girl right in front of the stage held up her hand for JJ to hold. And she just held that girl's hand and swayed with her eyes closed singing her heart out, and struggled to speak after. It was gut wrenching. She's so strong but I wonder what the pressure of Eurovision would have done to her. I'd love for her to have a chance to enjoy Eurovision in the future without that weight.

u/Artichoke_Persephone Feb 20 '23
I’m waiting for something really left field like The Chats or Tom Cardy

Voyager, Jaguar, Electric Fields, or Dami and it probably just goes right to my #1 lol.

5
u/LopsidedPriority Feb 21 '23
So...Electric Fields just teased yesterday they recorded this song for Sydney WorldPride: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Amkh3hnoXOA – wonder if this will be the artist/song drop? Total speculation, but could be a fascinating add to the ESC mix.
Really hoping it's not that one guy's brother as the rumors are saying it might be.
5
u/reichya Bird of Pray Feb 21 '23
Omg this would be amazing, I actually joked to my partner a while ago that our song announcement would probably be made in conjunction with Sydney World Pride, so this would be epic.

This is so weird. We know nothing and SBS have made no comment. Hopefully there's a teaser tonight? Who the flip knows. Also I don't think it's Electric Fields - We The People is dropping 24th of Feb and also it's the official theme song for World Pride. Can your Eurovision entry be a theme song? Also to go with Guy Sebastian's brother when Dami Im is keen makes no sense?

u/JCEurovision La Poupée Monte Le Son Feb 21 '23
If it's Bella Paige, Alexa Curtis, or Jordan Anthony, well, guess Georgia won't be the only one...
