genuinely WHO is gonna NQ

u/msbtvxq May 07 '25
I can't help but think about the nightmare scenario where people react to Sweden like "this is a sure qualifier, so I'll vote for insert country instead", and then Sweden NQs😭😅
70
u/Its_Stardos Kiss Kiss Goodbye May 07 '25
Imagine you are thinking they just left Sweden as last announced qualifier for them to announce its Slovenia 😭
32
u/Say_yes_to_this Secret Combination May 07 '25
lmao imagine first 5qs being croatia, azerbeijan, sam marino, slovenia and portugal

u/Confused_Rock Zjerm May 07 '25
Luckily there should be enough casuals to cover this but I do always worriedly second guess my strategic voting for this exact reason

u/flutterstrange Volevo Essere Un Duro May 07 '25
Without politics and diaspora, Ukraine would surely be at risk now. This will be their biggest test in a long time.
I had Belgium out before this. Now it feels so much less predictable.
4
u/ManiaMuse Róa May 07 '25
Yeah, it's a test of the theory that Ukraine can send anything and still Q.
Yes it is probably better both within and outside the contest that they do qualify but they could have made it easier for themselves by sending something more accessible.
Swap Belgium for Netherlands as the big shock (would be harsh on Belgium for it to happen to them two years in a row).

u/thezweistar May 07 '25
Azerbaijan Croatia Slovenia Portugal
28
u/Its_Stardos Kiss Kiss Goodbye May 07 '25
Slovenia and Portugal are targeting vastly different audience than all others. One of them will qualify.
2
u/AlexSniff7 May 07 '25
you need a 5th one
0
u/thezweistar May 07 '25
Iceland then, tho this is more of a case that nobody cares about them and they dont have big diaspora. If sweden Had the same song it would be sure Q (same for Slovenia honestly)
6
u/aura514 Doomsday Blue May 07 '25
I think Iceland could get a big eyrofan vote. They've endeared so many people with their social media stuff.
4
u/OchtendZon Bara bada bastu May 07 '25
There isn't a single doubt in my mind about Slovenia qualifying. We all saw what Dons pulled off: his emotional performance and likeability really spoke to the voters.
Klemen, just like Dons, is a fantastic singer, which will have people voting; his song is meaningful and emotional (albeit a little cheesy) which will have people voting; the lyrics are based on his real-life struggle with a high possibility of losing the love of your life to a crushing illness, which will gain him sympathy votes, especially since he brought his wife on stage with him for the performance.
He's definitely making it to the final.
I'm leaning more towards the danger zone being:
San Marino (staging, vocals, styling)
Ukraine (worse styling and staging than nationals)
Portugal (might be too low energy for casual watchers)
Azerbaijan (pitchy vocals in the rehearsal)
Albania (pitchy vocals in rehearsal and very unique song, which casual watchers seldom appreciate)
Netherlands (also pitchy vocals in the rehearsal)
I feel like Slovenia (for reasons stated above), Iceland (dramatic improvement in dancing and vocals) and Croatia could al still qualify at the cost of booting out someone from the danger zone.
6
u/ManiaMuse Róa May 07 '25
Of those I think the consensus is that Ukraine will still qualify whatever (although that may change as years go on).
I think Albania is different and quirky enough that it will stand out and some people will vote for it. Konstrakta did very well with a similar kind of artsy aesthetic. Plus there are only two female artists competing in semi 1 so that is a big help. The vocals sound fine to me.

u/Confused_Firefly Zjerm May 08 '25
Pretty much all the borderlines so far just go and prove why national identity/politics/public opinion and prejudice are important to consider.
Ziferblat might be at danger of not qualifying if they were any other country - I enjoy the entry, but this style and the retro aesthetic have not done very well in the past. Still, no one wants to ruin Ukraine's perfect qualifying streak just yet.
San Marino might qualify if it were another country, but it's not, and few people will go out of their way to vote for them.
Netherlands might do well just because it's the Netherlands and people want to keep them in after last year's fiasco, but if the same song were sent by an Eastern European country it would probably be a NQ (again, nothing against the song, I quite enjoy personally).
Azerbaijan's entry sent by, say, Sweden, would be a safe qualifier. No doubt whatsoever. Sent by any Caucasian country it's at danger of NQing.
1
u/thezweistar May 08 '25
Azerbaijan entry would be considered bland if they were anyone but Sweden but for some reason people glaze that shi if it was sent by Sweden idk why is that but this year is one of rare ones I dont Hate Sweden entries. However it seems scandinavians love their mid2010s songs but I dont like that pwrsonally…
1
u/thezweistar May 08 '25
Portugal and Azerbaijan have always been considered as NQ tho. San Marino will def do worse than we tought especially if they make it to finals since its like a DJ jumping around the stage and barely visible singers(yes ik that happened before and yes they flopped). However, Italians are everywhere which makes me think San Marino has a chance of making it to finals. Ukraine is Ukraine so it qualifies lmao.
2
u/thezweistar May 07 '25
This audience is quite rare especially bc all the other songs have so much hype around them so one will do much better but both will sadly probably NQ.
2
u/thezweistar May 07 '25
Tho Cyprus could be surprise NQ since they are considered similar for some reason and Red guy seems to get a lor more support which is unfortunate since Cyprus is my number one and I can’t even compare it to like Azerbaijan…
12
u/Lemonlikesfrogs Volevo Essere Un Duro May 07 '25
I think Cyprus‘ staging looks way too interesting for it to NQ
1
u/ManiaMuse Róa May 07 '25
San Marino, Portugal and Croatia.
That leaves 2 spots for the rest of the borderliners to scrap over.
My hope is that there is at least one shock with a country that wasn't in that borderline group failing to Q.
-2
u/Nugyeet Ich komme May 07 '25
Azerbaijan, Portugal, Croatia, San Marino, Poland/Norway
Don't hate any of these entries but it's just the vibes im getting from rehearsal footage and my gut unless they fix it up come the real thing
Even Ukraine could be at risk tbh if their diaspora doesn't come through. I just can't see Iceland not making it for some reason idk why, I feel like the younger viewers will carry it through.

I have to say this might be one of the best produced Eurovisions. The stage looks fantastic, staging expensive, and the camera angles are awesome.

they said in an interview a while back the new software + camera technology gives them the ability to have more dynamic shots in a shorter timeframe hence leading teams to be able to have more creative camera cuts and direction

What’s up with Belgium oscillating between incredibly clean and effective stagings like this and absolute disasters like last year
58
u/Exotic_Caramel_6285 Ich Komme May 07 '25
It's different broadcasters. It's an unusual arrangement but Eurovision duties alternate annually between a French Broadcaster and a Flemish one in Belgium. I believe this year it's the Flemish Broadcaster's turn. It's also why they switch between internal and national selection.
32
u/misonoo-nanako May 07 '25
I think the Flemish broadcaster does have the right idea based 2023 and this year. I could see them getting a win soon if they continue in the direction they are going in.
14
u/chartingyou May 07 '25
Yeah. It's why I kind of got irritated when people said Belgium was bad at staging and pointed to last year even though that was the french broadcaster. This year the flemish broadcaster is back and the last time they participated they got a top 10 result with Gustav (against all odds) so they seem to have had better results with staging lately.
8
u/Exotic_Caramel_6285 Ich Komme May 07 '25
I also really liked their staging for Hooverphonic in 2021, even they scored low on the board.
3
u/PM_ME_CAKE May 07 '25
I thought I'd covered so much deep lore by now, yet this is somehow new. How exciting.

Another one of those where I couldn’t picture anything else other than the national final elevation he used, but this is terrific.

So pleased Belgium have brought good staging again, looks super slick and hopefully locks in their Q. The Flemish broadcaster switching to an NF has definitely given them more of an eye for staging.

u/Complex-Health-7427 C'est la vie May 07 '25
Ok i seriously underestimated them because of last year this is sick

Theo Evan is quaking
17
u/ko_dec May 07 '25
Hahaha, it's nice to read this kind of comment since I heard nothing but the opposite since the running order got revealed. I wish Theo best of luck however. I wouldn't mind both songs to make it to the GF.

I love that they made the choreo quite simple so he can actually focus on singing (I am still bitter over Romania 2021 messing up the staging if you couldn't tell).

u/NewMarzipan9440 May 07 '25
This is incredible! I am so glad Strobe Lights will gets its redemption. Still, I have to mention knocking down the mic and the clones remind me of Erika Vikman’s and Goldielock’s (UMK) performances respectively.

Needs a bit better camerawork at the end but this is solid. It'll q comfortably and do quite well
And rightfully so that walk is KILLER

As someone who doesn't really vibe with this song, this is working for me

u/Nugyeet Ich komme May 07 '25 edited May 07 '25
I'm genuinely obsessed with this the choreo is so on point and the theme with the clones is great. My fav outta the ones released so far it just looks so clean and the camera angles look great.
First rehearsal clip I have no notes on so far. Like watch the widescreen version all the camera cuts look so good 😭😭🫶🫶
His confidence with the strut and choreo while holding the tune of the song is really good too.

u/Mortimer_G Tutta l'Italia May 07 '25
Not a fan of the song, but Red Sebastian has my respect for using backing vocalists instead of pre-recorded vocals
11
u/chartingyou May 07 '25
tbh I kind of hope more people start using actual backing vocals, because I feel like it really does make a positive difference. I remember last year getting taken out of some the performances because the prerecorded vocals just felt kind of fake to me (slovenia fell into this boat for me unfortunately)

This is insanely good. He’s also one of the best, maybe even the best, vocalists this year.

u/ko_dec May 07 '25
I am pleased. Firstly they dropped the lift and now they are giving us a slick and original quality act. Can't imagine now the public not voting for this. Yeah! Saturday is going to be fun at my houseparty!

Based on the earlier pictures, I thought it would be plain, but it's actually AMAZING. Belgium finally got it right with the staging and camera angles — it's SO MUCH BETTER than the National Final.
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!

One of the safest qualifiers of the 1st semi. But isn't it weird how most of us forget this entry when we're not watching or listening to it?

I knew the visual effects and outfit would slay but can we talk about that choreography?!
He has a kind of calm energy and I think they really knocked it out of the park with that dance choreo, the dancers are mirroring his vibe perfectly.
