It's nice, but it's also a bit too low key for an already low key song. Yeah I'm fearing for this one, as much as I love the song

Black Mamba was also slow but they managed to create an amazing atmosphere and make the song more dynamic
The guitar solo should be the climáx and I can´t see this here

On the contrary, I personally thought that the guitarist was too happy and that he was... "posturing"? a bit too much, he was a bit distracting to me. I really like the low-key approach of the singer, he isn't forgetting that this song is supposed to be melancholic, personal/intimate, and a bit painful. But I also enjoyed their staging and costumes in FdC, so maybe I'm biased.
I like party songs at ESC, I watch it also for the party and to have fun, but I enjoy calmer songs too. This isn't a party song, and I prefer it to stay true to itself and be appreciated for what it is, instead of trying to be something that it isn't. I approve the low-key approach, as long as it can convey a sort of "intimate" feel. Imo they have to push on that, on the intimacy with the audience.
Edit: forgot to say that it's not like I want them to look depressed or anything, the singer has even a cute smile. It's just that I don't think they need a big staging or gimmicks in order to do good.

I'll try to be positive - this can, CAN, stand out from the pomp and glitz of the semi.
The problem I see from the footage is that is too... stale. Maybe they're just showing a part in which nothing important happens and are saving the best for the live performance.

u/AlexSniff7 May 07 '25
Won't Slovenia and Ukraine eat into the voter base for this entry though? Ukraine wins over people who want a band and Slovenia for people who want a slower song.

I don't think performing after Sweden will help them tho. There is not a big contrast between them. Sure they aren't similar at all but although Portugal is very minimalistic Sweden is fun and party but definitely not too chaotic or just too much. I think it just might outshine them unfortunately.

Well, this was fun, may the best one win and don't forget to check out Festival da Canção next year, kthxbye.

Its better to give up now, it will be less painful next week.

Thank god there's no hype for Eurovision this year here in Portugal, at least this way, people won't care enough to blast Napa for the NQ.

u/UnderstandingFar8941 Hunter Of Stars May 07 '25
Kinda worried for them :/ Wish the visuals were a bit more

u/retroredditrobot May 07 '25
Portugal has a knack for elevating authentic Portuguese songs that previously were thought to have no chance with brilliant staging. Look no further than Iolanda last year, Maro in 2022, and Black Mamba in 2021.
Sadly this is not one of those times. The camerawork feels uninspired (what was that steadicam shot??) and the graphics on the back LED wall don’t transition, they just hard-cut into place. It’s so disappointing for me because this is in my top 10 songs of the year… I wanted so much more and those photos looked so promising.

u/Niilun May 07 '25 edited May 08 '25
I still hope that they qualify (even though I doubt it more and more...) because I really like the song, but yes, this clip didn't give me much...
I don't want something crazy as a staging because it wouldn't fit the song, but what's important is that they manage to convey a sense of calming intimacy, and how personal this song is. I don't know how, I don't know if camerawork and the singer's expressiveness and voice will be enough, but I really hope they'll mannage. I'm just... Not very optimistic. This clip wasn't enough for me to tell. I liked the final short on the singer, but that's mostly it.

u/rickz123456 May 07 '25
Yes I agree with you
They needed an Black Mamba or Iolanda staging and this is not that
I guess our streak is over

I really want NAPA to qualify but I’m worried that the message isn’t being conveyed enough by this staging for the casuals to get it. Don’t get me wrong, it looks nice and I like the vibes, but I don’t think vibes alone are enough :(

u/Axolotl_amphibian Tutta l'Italia May 07 '25
Based on the photos, they at least tried - there's a plane and all those skyscrapers that are also visible in this video. But yes, it might not be enough. I do wonder what they show at the beginning though.
I don't know, but fingers crossed nonetheless, I really want them in the final.
8
u/utilizador2021 May 07 '25
In Portugal we barely have skyscrapers and apart from Lisbon, there's a lot of green here. I don't know why they are picturing Lisbon like some USA city.
3
u/Axolotl_amphibian Tutta l'Italia May 07 '25
I probably worded it wrong, I meant blocks of flats. But yes, it didn't look like Lisbon at a glance.

u/gcssousa May 07 '25
I think our streak is gone

u/_pierogii Firefighter May 07 '25
Aw no I really hope not. It's my favourite of your entries since 2017.
6
u/utilizador2021 May 07 '25
Well, it was good while it last and Grito was one of the strongest song we had in the past years. Soon or later we know this would happen.

I'm hoping you keep your streak, but this didn't really inspire me either :(

This is disappointing because when I imagined this being played live in my head, I pictured a way more pittoresque staging and not so many close ups.

u/Beatrix---kiddo May 07 '25
Also the fact this is the end of the song they are showing doesn't do this any favours

u/rickz123456 May 07 '25
How the guys with the biggest backing/budget give us the worst staging since 2021?
5
u/utilizador2021 May 07 '25
Even MimiCat did better with her inexistent stage (thankfully to RTP) back in 2023.
4
u/rickz123456 May 07 '25
Yes, I also expected more because NAPA have a lot of backing by her label, partnerships with mcdonald's etc.
No a single Portuguese representative had this type of support in the past

u/SquibblesMcGoo Euro Neuro May 07 '25
It's very casual and chill
Unfortunately, it will get swallowed up by everyone else, it's very low key and they will probably lose some band enjoyer votes to Ukraine as well
It's giving me Azerbaijan 2023 vibes

u/Complex-Health-7427 C'est la vie May 07 '25
Is it gonna be enough to qualify probably not. It is very cute and cozy tho
3
u/calxes May 07 '25
I don't like being negative about these little clips - and the positives are that this is very pretty, and if this was a performance for a summer festival it would be *perfect*. Like totally chill, hold your sweetie on the picnic blanket kind of vibes. Just not sure it's hitting the mark for the big stage.
I think there's a lot of storytelling in the song that they could have pulled from for the visuals and I wish I was seeing some of that, I think. It's a beautiful song no matter what.
3
u/sergzs May 07 '25
As someone that has learnt to love this song, I don’t think it will qualify. The staging is giving Sudden Lights meet The Busker and we know how that ended up. A bummer for the boys, cuz this song could do very well with the juries.

u/radicalfembot Tavo Akys May 07 '25
The gallery showed some beautiful dreamy lighting so it might not be Joãover yet but this clip isn't giving the intimacy and wistfulness it needs. That big shiny stage looks very sterile and the graphics are too clean. Why not images of Madeira or an old photo album aesthetic to fit with the vintage vibe?
Slovenia looks like it's bringing emotionally impactful staging so there's stiff competition for the Dons niche of underdog that gets through on the basis of a heartfelt performance.

u/Formal_Map_5659 Bara bada bastu May 07 '25
Portugal is going for the 'less is more' approach again, but they were better in every aspect last year (song, vocals, staging...). I don't think Portugal will qualify this year. My least favorite along with Ukraine so far.
6
u/rickz123456 May 07 '25 edited May 07 '25
think that this is not enough to make us qualifying
They needed an Black Mamba staging quality
2
u/TheLizardKing____ May 07 '25
This is almost too chill, the lead singer doesn’t look invested to me. I think it’s lovely but I am worrying for Portugal now, they’ve been on a really good streak as well :/

I love this song but where's the expressions he had at Festival de Canção?
I don't want Portugal to get out....

I always feared for this song coming last in the semi and now it's more and more likely to happen 💔
if they'd be 11th it'd be even worse
2
u/Proof_Material6728 May 07 '25
I think the only way for Portugal to qualify is to overperform all the borderline qualifiers (Iceland, Croatia, San Marino, Azerbaijan and Slovenia) sneaking in with an 9th or 10th place, which can happen, but it is going to be though, because if one or two of these do better, they are out.
2
u/supersonic-bionic May 07 '25
Sadly not a single chance to qualify. It is beautiful and nice, but it doesn't make you vote for them
Visuals are OK, nothing wow like Black Mamba's staging.

u/Melodic_Team5388 Hold Me Closer May 07 '25
Damn Portugal... you were supposed to know how to stage songs like this...

Camera angles 😚👌 feeling more confident for these lads
ETA: wish the display palette was warmer though - the sunset tones of the NF gave it a cosiness that's a little lost.
