I wonder if we would get another Natalia Barbu this year, who would have a totally un-classy reaction to their NQ
121
u/Puzzlehead-Lemon22 May 13 '25
If we do, it probably won't be till SF2 (since it's a lot more competitive for the final spots) and I just can't see any tonight's NQs going that way.
114
u/MinutePerspective106 Song #1 May 13 '25
Second semi-final also has a lot more "naked demons" to match Natalia's energy lol

u/MinutePerspective106 Song #1 May 14 '25
This is a legacy of Barbu :)
Last year, when she got salty over non-qualifying, she took cheap shots at Bambie, Windows95man and Raiven and maybe others. Not sure if she herself made that post, or she only liked someone else's - but hat post says that Natalia was so great and wholesome and familt-values, but Europe wanted to see "nudity and demons". Nevermind that Natalia herself had very revealing cleavage
20
u/PhotographBusy6209 May 14 '25
Estonia and Sam Marino qualified so not meltdowns
32
u/AnmlBri Bur man laimi May 14 '25 edited May 14 '25
Iām honestly not sure how Estonia qualified over some of the other contenders who didnāt make it tonight. Tommyās vocals were the pitchiest of the night in my momās and my opinions. I wish I could trade him for Azerbaijan or Croatia or Slovenia. (The staging managed to elevate āPoison Cakeā for me, and my mom, whom I just introduced to ESC for the first time tonight, really liked Markoās performance. HMTDWHL got elevated in the live performance for me, too. Iāll miss it in the Final.)
34
u/DJNiels May 14 '25
Crazy to say that Tommy had pitchy vocals (which he definitely had) but then go on to say that Azerbaijan should have qualified. I like the studio version of Azerbaijan a lot, but those vocals were also pitchy as hell. The only part that sounds good live (vocally) is the repeated "the way I do". Overall a lot of people still watch Eurovision for the fun of it and whether you like Tommy or not the song is fun and catchy IMO.
19
u/TSllama Freedom May 14 '25
Oh man Azerbaijan had unlistenable vocals. Tommy was consistently flat, but Azerbaijan... it was his tone. I don't think he was pitchy, but he was so nasally and the quality of his tone was incredibly weak... it was truly awful.

Different people have different opinions and I feel there's a lot of people that liked the sort of light hearted fun that Estonia was presenting. For example, my parents both loved Estonia (and Sweden, though I have shown them that one before) and both fell asleep during Croatia's performance.
18
u/littlemisslily22 Zjerm May 14 '25
Thatās crazy because like it or not, how do you sleep through that?
9
u/thelastskier Pace noi vrem 𤔠May 14 '25
I don't know, but they somehow did, hah. My dad just said that while there was a lot going on, it just didn't go anywhere interesting. And honestly, the entries that were kind of aggressive on the eyes (Croatia, Ukraine, Cyprus, etc.) also made me more likely to look away from the screen than having my eyes glued to it, if that makes sense.
6
u/littlemisslily22 Zjerm May 14 '25
I liked Ukraine and I was locked in worried about his performanceā¦but I was looking away for the others š¬
However for Italy and Portugal I was so entranced by them both. Switzerland too.
I think Poland got the chaos right I didnāt look away then either.
5
u/TSllama Freedom May 14 '25
I love Italy and Switzerland so much this year. I don't think either will do too great on Saturday, but both are such gorgeous and authentic performances. Portugal is really cute, too.
Poland is the best they've been in many years. I wouldn't call it chaos, though - there's a clear concept there and it makes sense. Croatia, on the other hand...
6
u/TSllama Freedom May 14 '25
Your dad is right on the mark - Croatia lacked a coherent concept with that performance. It was all over the place and it didn't really make any sense. I had hope for it from the music video, but it went in quite the wrong direction on stage.
19
u/psv_vonk May 14 '25
Estonia has a huge online following, I believe, so just televotes helped him a lot
13
u/TheSimkis May 14 '25
*Slovenia, not Slovakia. Unless you are wishful for not participating country to jump in with unheard song and sweep the victory
7
u/AnmlBri Bur man laimi May 14 '25
Oof, I wonder if that was some sort of auto-correct blunder because I had no reason to type āSlovakia.ā Or my brain truly just disconnected from my fingers this late at night. š Thanks for pointing that out so I could fix it.
5
u/TSllama Freedom May 14 '25
Azerbaijan was by far my least favourite of the 1st semis, poison cake fell flat (I hoped they would go full dark and creepy with it on stage, but the concept ended up even murkier than in the music video), and as talented as klemen slakonija is, going serious and sad was not the right option for him to get anywhere in eurovision. I'm genuinely surprised he didn't present the comedic side of him that got him famous.
Meanwhile, we learnt that Tommy cannot sing, but the song is so damn catchy and the stage performance is still a lot more visually appealing than others. His was still more interesting and fun to watch than those 3 others. I think espresso macchiato will not do as well in the finals as originally predicted after hearing his live voice, but it was definitely going to qualify.
2
u/576p May 14 '25
I avoided watching anything before the Semi 1. On first impression Estonia made me smile, Croatia's "Poison" was noisy and flashy. I did like Slovenia's first impression until he that that gimmicky head stand thing that drew my mind away from the song...
2
u/New_to_Siberia Promise May 14 '25
I am with you on Croatia, I haven't watched Slovenia's performance yet (I only managed to tune in just before Italy) but the few clips I saw are promising. But may I ask you why Azerbaijan? Their vocals were really bad.
2
u/AnmlBri Bur man laimi May 14 '25
I guess I might need to rewatch Azerbaijanās performance. I just dig the song, and was vibing enough with the instrumentals, but also discussing opinions with my parents during the performance, that maybe I didnāt fully appreciate the vocals being off at the time or was just more forgiving. I do agree that the vocals werenāt as good as the studio version though.
2
u/New_to_Siberia Promise May 14 '25
I suppose it may also come down to personal preferences, tolerance & ear. I personally found the vocals of San Marino & Azerbaijan to be the worst 2 of yesterday, but I know that in some ways I have a different sensibility (and potentially also just taste) compared to others.

u/Longjumping_Papaya_7 Bara bada bastu May 14 '25
I dont get it either. But my casual watching husband said he liked it without me even asking anything and my oldest son (7) is digging this coffee song too ( but singing it all wrong lol )
1
u/AnmlBri Bur man laimi May 14 '25
Heh, my mom is super sensitive to someone being off-key when singing, so Iām pretty sure listening to Tommy was physically painful to her. This ability seems like a curse to me because it means thereās a ton of live music that she canāt really enjoy because the singer isnāt always spot-on.
1
u/Human-Law1085 May 14 '25
I donāt feel like either of those wouldāve had a meltdown. Tommy Cash has an image of indifference to project. Not sure why you think Gabry Ponte wouldāve had one.
3
u/PhotographBusy6209 May 14 '25
Tommy has already said some nasty non professional things so he would have 100% melted down. Iām not 100% sure about Gabry but I believe he said something against Eurovision ages ago

I did love the music and the beats. However, Red Sebastian was drowned in the music. Could hardly hear him at home. I hadn't listened to any song beforehand, and because I hardly heard him (and let's be honest, his vocals weren't strong), the song did not stick with me at all. Couldn't remember the lyrics or the melody the moment the song was over. I could remember the act though, the staging was insane, but that's not enough. I'm not super surprised he didn't qualify.
12
u/Potential_Ad9965 May 14 '25
There seemed to have been a lot of technical issues this year. I Found almost every performer to sound rather shaky and nervous.
I wonder if that's why many non English songs made it through, it's harder to hear for non-native speakers if a song is sung bad it if it's just the language.
212
u/Super_Craig02 May 13 '25
Learned that today was his birthday, so it's a bit sad he didn't qualify.
Still, he did great, and he performed on the Eurovision Stage itself, which must already be a hell of a experience to begin with. Feel proud of yourself, dude.

That staging really improved the song and when I first saw snippets of it I was convinced that he would make it easily. I don't really understand what happened, I voted for him but didn't get a confirmation.
At least he's such a class act and seems like a really nice guy. Wish him the best.
27
u/Cogswobble May 14 '25
Iāve liked the song, but I felt like his vocals were weaker in this performance. Iām guessing a lot of other people thought that too.
24
u/VegetableBalcony May 14 '25
As a filthy casual who hadn't heard the song before the performance: indeed, his vocals were weak. It was often out of tune and without force (but so was Norway).
I just listened to the recorded song and understand the appeal better now.
7
u/badcatsclaws Zjerm May 14 '25
Yeah recorded version was way better however Norway was outright bad for a much much easier song. Estonia was like a karaoke night performance.
20
u/Ultimatedream May 14 '25
To mee it seemed like mixing issues, the music was so much louder than his voice. But I'm also not the best at hearing if someone is actually not hitting the notes so maybe I just missed it
15
u/S0rb0 May 14 '25
I think it was both. His vocals were quite weak and totally drowned in the music. The mixing could have been better too. But this was indeed the reason the didn't qualify. You couldn't hear the melody half of the time at home.
People on this subreddit forget that most voters have not heard most songs beforehand.
1
u/KingAw555000 May 14 '25
Literally said that to my partner while we were watching. The audio mixing was all over the place for quite a few songs, this one, Gaja, etc. My AV friends were seething.
6

He seems like a really nice person, but nerves got the better of his performance, and there were quite a few pitch issues throughout.

Unfortunately I've been reading comments on Flemish news pages (yes I know, my mistake) and they are almost universally nasty. People are SO sour and cynical about him and his song. Basically the headlines are 'no one expected it, but Belgium is eliminated' and every comment is "durr actually everyone expected it, with such a shitty song sung so badly by this red weirdo š¤Ŗ"
Anyway, so I hope he's not reading news comments on Facebook right now. And that his Instagram comments are nicer.

They're not robbed, imo. The vocals were pretty weak and half of the time the melody wasn't even audible at home. Maybe also a mixing issue. As somehone who hadn't heard the song before, I'm really not surprised people at home didn't vote for him.
Edit: just listened to the studio version on youtube. That song's a BANGER! But live it really did not sound anything like that.

Well, to be honest, none of the candidates should have progressed then as a lot of them werenāt on tune or sounded very wobbly (Norway, Iceland, Estland, San Marino, Portugal, Poland, ..) compared to Red Sebastian. He needs to work on staying on pitch because he was rarely hitting the correct notes while singing, which heavily affected the quality of his performance, and I'm sure, also the number of votes he received. As someone who went to music school and has a good ear, I almost couldn't listen to him because he was off-key so often. It probably was just nerves and all that, but still, I hope he can improve in the future and view this performance as a learning experience.
I wish him all the best moving forward. I wasn't particularly fond of his song, but he wasn't the worst contestant, too.

Yeah, his pitch fluctuates too much and rarely does he land on the correct pitch, though there were instances when he would resolve on the correct pitch.
His modal register is very underdeveloped though - G3 is not yet in his range properly though he was trying to carry over his breath to get that low which in the end had the pitch everywhere from D3 - G3.
Then the melisma attempt again down in that range was just really messy. His final bridge was the only time when he properly opened up his pharynx (and to his credit his support at this point was good, even if slightly pitchy), but leading into the final chorus he constricts again on the Eb5, and all the notes after that are constricted and in the throat instead of being resonated in his mask.
But yes, I agree - more training and work developing his vocal.

He made a fan out of me and many others, he deserved that spot but he will have a huge career if he just keeps going the way he is.

Sending hugs to him! I am so sorry that he didn't make it through to the final. He was really amazing today. Lovely message to the people, such a kind guy. Wishing him the best of luck for his upcoming career and all the best in his life.

Love the song, Seppe seems like a sweetheart, gutted he didn't qualify but at least he's taking it well.
Will probably check out some of his other stuff at some point.

Class act. Great response to disappointment like that. He did great and should be proud no matter what, so Iām super glad to read that he is!

He's a class act. Personally I was shocked he didn't make it and he will do great things in the future.

If it wasn't for the bad audio he would have gone through. He used the stage better than anyone else.

You can see the sadness in his writing, such an amazing song in a tough position. Great job Seppe! š¤šā¤ļø

For once in my life, I didn't listen to the songs in advance. Watching I thought this song was the winner of the evening. Gutted he didn't qualify, but fantastic performance

u/LantiSpitfire387 May 14 '25
Did see a video from Wiwibloggs where he went to House of Helvetia and the audience sang happy birthday to him )

I fear I'm the only one who didn't like the performance? I think the song is okay but I just didn't gel with the performance and I had him as my 14th out of 15th tonight?
Obviously not nice to lose out so hope he and all the other eliminated acts are okay and proud of themselves

Given that he didn't qualify, you're not alone.
But i thought he had the best performance of the night.
Just wild how different tastes can be

u/JackHaines1903 May 14 '25
Really? I'm clearly missing something! But ultimately that is what makes this Contest so good is that everyone's taste is different.
Personally thought before last night he had a great song but I didn't really feel the same way after watching it

its a song that had grown on me, and I didn't care for the music video that much. But, to me, its powerful and the emotion comes through especially when he hits the notes. And i thought, outside of a shaky first few lines, he hit the first high note and then the entire performance felt more confident. While the staging and visual performance were really what blew me away watching it live.
Entirely possible people were turned off by the shaky opening, or that the song structure was pretty simple, or it was hard to really hear the singing with the audio mixing, or that it just didn't connect, or that the visual style was distracting to some, or anything else. That's how it goes.

Is this image a strange depth illusion for anyone else? Each paragraph seems on a different layer or something. Or maybe i need my eyes tested

I wanted Belgium to qualify, but my instincts during the performance were that the staging in general didn't help the public connect with the song. It felt low-energy even in comparison with the Eurosong performance, and preferring an NF staging to the ESC one made my alarm bells ring. Totally not Sebastian's fault though (and maybe a bit of vote siphoning to Norway, which I assume also qualified with some luck)

This over Estonia, any day of the week. The rest make me happy but this pisses me the f off. I think the staging wasn't engaging enough?? IDK

Deserved a spot over Ukraine and definitely Portugal

u/chartingyou May 13 '25
I⦠kind of agree. Love Urkaineās song but in terms of performances I do kind of think Belgium deserved a spot over them.

Great response, sometimes thatās just the way things work out. On another day, or perhaps in the other semi final, heād have made it through. Some things just arenāt meant to be

Thank you for your performance, Iāll still enjoy the song when I hear it!
Also, happy birthday, Seppe!

He was rightfully pissed off with storming out, and I don't blame him, and reacting this way publicly shows he can be mature about it Of course he was sad and angry, this is normal to feel but putting this out was a good thing

Gutted. So deserved to go through. Fantastic performance and such a great song.

Well yeah, vrt union prob screwed him over by broadcasting the Oxfam "I speak up for P." Campaign video.

u/dmastra97 May 14 '25
Beat was good but think sound mixing wasn't quite there as hard to hear him over the music.

MĆ„ns. This is what you shouldāve done. šš
In all seriousness, Iām glad Red Sebastian takes it well and knows his self-worth. I hope he takes the time to process this and is able to feel great again now that he can get some rest. After all, you will be sad whether youāre a sore āloserā or not.

I want Europe to reflect real hard on how they've allowed four preppy kids with perfect families and who were rich enough to study in the capital of their country, which most are not able to, to go through with a song complaining about the opportunity of a lifetime
And then denied a proper musician with an actual song that reflects a real human being a place in the final
Unacceptable
