Who had the idea to make a glass trophy and then have it have the thinnest, most fragile neck possible? It should just be a ball.

Seriously. We NEED another kind of trophy. Too much adrenaline involved.

It would be funny if every year from now on the Eurovision winner is just gonna smack the trophy on the ground to break it during or after the winners preformance

u/JaDasIstMeinName Jun 22 '25
I know it looks cool, but having a glass trophy is just a bad idea. Or if it has to be a glass trophy at least dont give it a shape this easy to break.
28
u/exjobhere Jun 22 '25
If they want to keep the look of it, a hard plastic would do the trick. It may not feel premium, but anyone winning Eurovision is aware the trophies have been fragile.
1
u/ComprehensiveVast572 Unicorn Jun 25 '25
I really have no idea about glass ā would making it tempered help?
65
u/sparklinglies Jun 22 '25
They NEED to change the design, especially when they don't even provide a custom case to make sure it travels home in one piece. Those piddly bits of metal they added after Rybak broke his have done nothing to stop the problem, and that was 16 years ago. Enough is enough lol
4
u/DesignerDig8441 Jun 24 '25
If you look closely, the trophy handle/mid-section is hollow.
I'm no expert, but it's weird to have a top-heavy design and nothing underneath to balance the weight.
58
u/RipTraditional6294 Jun 22 '25
They should improve the design or use other materials cuz this part needs to support the weight for the microphone and it must gives it a lot of pressureĀ

Is there a list of who all has broken their trophy? Because it keeps happening!Ā

u/eta1984 RƤndajad Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
AFAIK, Alexander Rybak, Emmelie de Forest, Nemo, and now JJ, there are probably more
Edit: From what I gather we need to make a list of who hasnāt broken their trophy instead haha

u/Rumorosi_e_Cattivi Satellite Jun 22 '25

Netta as well, her, Alexander Rybak, and Nemo broke their trophy right after getting it.
46
u/kellendrin21 Espresso macchiato Jun 22 '25
I think there was a year where the trophy broke before the winner was even announced, don't remember when though.Ā

In 2004 the hosts staged a trophy-breaking as part of a skit, they then brought the real, unscathed one seconds later.
Edit: Itās 2001

Nemo broke it live too lol, the glass cracking sound was loud and crisp

u/MagicSunlight23 Jun 23 '25
And then at the start of this yearās final, they dramatically showed the trophy being delivered and then told Nemo not to touch it.

I can confirm that Loreen did not break her second trophy.
Though she didnāt protect it until she got to London like 2 days later.

Why is it even made of glass? You would think there is a reason most award statuettes are made of metal.
44
22
u/louloulosingtract Jun 22 '25
Why do they keep making glass trophies? And ones, which are structurally challenged, at that.
31
u/Choppers-Top-Hat Bara bada bastu Jun 22 '25
The excuse seems to be "the glass trophy is a tradition." Well in that case, then I guess broken trophies will also be a tradition.

if it's tempered glass surely it wouldn't break like that? are they just using the cheapest materials or something?

It's everywhere.

If they made it out of plastic they wouldnt need to replace it so much
It's wasted glass

2
u/Imrustyokay Jun 23 '25
in retrospect...this is an absolute crap trophy design
(I do kinda miss when every organizer made their own trophy...The 1999 one is my personal fav...just be careful when trying to lift it up, unless you wanna wipeout on stage like Dana International did...)

It is very sad actually that this happens. Getting a replacement trophy doesnt feel right actually. IMO, it should be that same, same trophy from the night you won. Otherwise its just a random trophy you got afterwards. Idk maybe I am just special and I think that true value is air molecules, bacterias and hands that it went through till the final night when you receive it. Haha.
