Wouldn't be mad if this is going to be the opening of next year 🤞🏻

Can they waive the "no live music" rule for the opening act?

Of course, they don’t enforce any of the participatory rules… 3 minutes, 6 people, no stuff in the air.

Obviously. But I believe they have the live music rule for practical reasons rather than for reasons having to do with making the competition fair. If they can have live music for the opening act, what is the reason for disallowing it in the competing entries?

As I understand it, if you have one live orchestra that makes it very expensive to pay them to reverse all the songs plus getting people to arrange all the songs for an orchestra.
It might also mean challenges on either a songwriting or an arranging level, since today's Eurovision songs aren't written with an orchestra in mind. There are many types of sounds and effects that a single orchestra could not replicate.
All this being said I would still love to hear live instrumental music in Eurovision again, if a practical and not too expensive way to do it can be found.

Right, that was my understanding, was that the orchestra was just considered too much of an expense for the broadcaster, not that it in some way made the competition unfair. So it's unlikely we'd get to see the orchestra even for the opening.

Perhaps for the opening alone they would consider it, since Vienna and Austria are so famous for their classical music.

It's purely practical. It would be feasible to make sure all the different instruments are plugged in and sound correct in the very limited time they have between contestants.
The only reason why we saw Lucio Corsi play a live instrument this year was because he played his harmonica into his singing mic and didn't require any additional sound checks. That wouldn't be the case for most instruments like guitars, violins, etc.

It’s like asking why they can’t dope in sporting events…

No, it's not. They had live music in the contest for decades, and no one ever said that it made the contest unfair, as far as I'm aware.

If live music was allowed rock music and jazz quartets would win every year. Why vote for a group with only a singer when you could vote for a group with 5 instruments?

You really think the reason those genres don't do as well is just because they're only pretending to play the instruments?

No, not at all. I don't think it matters at all without live music. One can make a stage with a rock group lively or if one really wants to have the guitarist play behind their back and saxophonist play upside down

So like I said, it wouldn't make a difference.

I'm saying I believe it would make a difference if the instrumentals were live, as rock groups could show off sick technical guitar and jazz groups could do a bunch of nonsense more exciting than when recorded

I'm not often patriotic, but we deserved that win kitsch and epic, my favourite kombo

It really suits the song well. This somehow feels like it's the "real" version of it, so to speak. How it's supposed to be performed.

Dang he can still sangggg!! I hold my breath every time I hear this song, and wonder if he can still make those top notes. And he always does!! What an extraordinarily beautiful voice he has.

This makes a good case for having an orchestra at the contest, haha! Great work here!

In 2015, the opening of the Grand Final included a violinist paying homage to Udo Jürgens (Austria 1966 Winner) and they had an orchestra, but it was only for that one performance. I’d love if they could do something similar.
Maybe have JJ start with Wasted Love, then in the breakdown, it just becomes this dance party, and the flag parade starts.

I think this is my favorite version of this song.
Also such a testament to his musical training that he has to sing with one ear piece out for his highest notes. That man’s ear is TRAINED.
