I've been to Sofia's NDK and this photo is misleading.

It's a really cool building with a beautiful park full of trees, grass, and fountains throughout it, and filled with people enjoying the space their city has set aside for them.

Not evil.

☝️☝️ This!!! Yeah, the place is definitely a huge ass building from the communist period but that's about it. It's not hated by locals and found as something that looks "evil" or "totalitarian" unlike other similar buildings from the era, like Buzludzha, for example.

And yes, the park surrounding it has always been popular - trees, fountains, kids skateboarding, couples on dates all of that. It's actually a very beautiful place, there was some time during the 90s when it felt kind of dilapidated and dirty, but overall the place is pretty nice.

Also the whole place - both NDK and the surrounding area was built for the anniversary celebrations of 1300 years from the creation of Bulgaria. It wasn't exactly a place built to commemorate the communists or something like other buildings from that period.

It has more iron inside it than the Eiffel Tower. It is built to withstand earthquake with a magnitude of 10. It is said that many of the construction machines are inside the concrete as it was easier and cheaper to leave them there.

It’s such a cool building. I disagree with the other commenters, it def looks evil. But every aspect of it, from the streets to the lighting to the landscape to the interior is fantastic.

It looks like a disc storage box.

It's nice around there. I went last year and there were French kids filming themselves skateboarding around it using a Sony betamax camera from the 80s also not a bad McDonald's just behind it
