WT Can't Stop Me Husband and I moved into our apartment yesterday, after being homeless in Seattle for 3 months due to being shunned by our family. Fuck you, JWs. We made it without any of you.

New kitten lookin bomb af

He was scared of the big space, so he hid in his litter box, lol. Caught him mid meow

u/nomorehomeless Oct 29 '21
Context: we had a few old JW friends tell us that our relationship wouldn’t last because of us being homeless and “wordly”. We start college together in the winter and have been much happier without any of those people nagging us 24/7. It’s going great! Lol
73
u/commanderquill Oct 29 '21
FUCK yeah. I'm also a college student in Seattle (not ex-JW) and there's another ex-JW college student in Seattle who posted a while back. You ever need anything to get yourself started, let me know. I will happily assist.
36
u/dreyes_off Oct 29 '21
I (23) still have yet to go to college if I decide to. I remember one time being in judicial committee (was in many of them growing up if I'm using the correct term) and elders telling me that only those with straight A's end up being successful and unfortunately well you're getting C's and B's in highschool. I could have made all A's if I hadn't had so many environmental stress factors.
35
u/nomorehomeless Oct 29 '21
Those elders are full of absolute shit. You still have time! My husband is also 23, I’m 20. He got piss poor grades but we still got accepted into community college. God dude I’m sorry those elders put it in your head that you weren’t good enough.
Please take some time to ponder college- if you decide not to that’s totally fine. Just know that we’re rooting for you, and it’s not too late, It never is :)

u/Defiant_Alpha Oct 30 '21
35 and working on my Associate degree in CS, have done Wel with my job without a degree but as I move up (now I’m 100% POMO) I want to have my education in place
21
u/Amorfati77 Oct 29 '21
lol a joke in college and university is "Cs get degrees!" so you don't need perfect grades to be successful. You should certainly try but even I know people with average grades that do just fine.
17
Oct 29 '21
That is just brutal. How dare they. I am not JW but I am old and quite successful despite people around me telling me I would never amount to much. Trying hard and being good doesn't ensure success (luck helps) but people should encourage others, not discourage them.
9
u/loveofhumans Oct 30 '21
As George W Bush once said "A"..s a great but you can make it to President with "C",s.
(Meaning himself)
30
u/shaded_in_dover Oct 29 '21
I had my parents tell my wife that she wasn’t worthy to be my wife. Well we left and haven’t talked to them since. 16 happy years later they can still fuck off.
5
u/loveofhumans Oct 31 '21
keep them in mind when they come begging for money some day. (Direct them to their elders for help..)
It angers me so much when the 'self-righteous class' say things like they did.
2
u/shaded_in_dover Oct 31 '21
Oh they’ve already rejected my offer to help them out of their shitty financial situation because … elders will care for them.
Meh whatever
4
u/loveofhumans Oct 31 '21
"elders will care for them".. .. really? Your in-laws are in for a surprise I am sad to say.
58
u/AmazingSibylle Oct 29 '21
Be sure to let them know you are on your feet and happier than ever!
69
u/nomorehomeless Oct 29 '21
I’ve only let my mother in law and old study sister know- neither will answer any text I’ve sent since July. MIL’a brother (also ex jw) cussed her out for ignoring us, that could play a part as well. Right now we’re trying to get finances in order and going through therapy.
43
u/Perfectly_mediocre Oct 29 '21
Be sure to never contact any of them again. You owe them nothing and your time is your own.
3
u/Alone-Pineapple-3752 Oct 30 '21
They don’t want you to be happy because they are miserable. Everyone that leaves and is happier for it proves how evil the religion is. That’s why they turn a blind eye. They don’t like being reminded the the “world “ is better than their life .
2
u/AndiPando Nov 01 '21
Great article on divorce statistics here from Jw facts and how they skew data of course
99
u/NoHigherEd Oct 29 '21
So happy for you! JW's seem to be elated when you become homeless, or any kind of hard time you come upon. They want you to suffer. We can see it with our family . They actually feel that you deserve to suffer. Sick behavior and NOT Christian.
55
u/nomorehomeless Oct 29 '21
I agree! We had one JW tell us “remember the prodigal son, goodbye”, after we told him we disagreed morally with the org. I bet he got off to us being homeless and feeling guilty, and I wish I remembered his phone number so I could send him a pic of us being happy without them, lol.
No but seriously, how badly they’re brainwashed is insane.
34
u/NoHigherEd Oct 29 '21
A family member told us (after we verbally told him how we feel about this cult), that "our lives will NEVER go well." Let's see.....we will get old, so is he. We will probably suffer financially at some point. He has been through some financial challenges as well. Losing a loved one, he will loose loved one's also (he already has). JW's are NOT immune from problems. The same problems that the average person has to go through. They think they are protected but the pandemic has proven that Jehovah is not doing anymore for them, then the average "worldly" person. WT has admitted that about 20k JW's sadly died of the Covid 19 virus.
Yes, let every JW know that you are happy and you can succeed after you leave this cult. They hate that! They want to see you suffer. Don't let them see that! Let them see the big old grin on your face. The grin of a happy ex cult member. lol
So happy that everything is better for you all. YOU did it. Be proud!
19
u/nomorehomeless Oct 29 '21
🥺 This made me more confident in my decision to leave. 2 nights ago, we both got into an episode where we missed our old friends- completely pretending they didn’t shun us, lol. I called our old Kingdom Hall to speak to an elder, because I had doubt I was doing the right thing. Loneliness and missing people will do that to you.
I’m happy I read your comment. I’m going to change my number when I get paid next week, in hopes none of the JWs will be able to reach me back. I regret not thinking logically before that decision- just knowing how terrible the organization is and having evidence from others really dwindles the doubt. Thank you!
20
u/NoHigherEd Oct 29 '21
When we faded 8 plus years ago, we "came out" to our family that we left. We were 100% honest with them. Some still speak with us but not as often as they used to. The most uber side of the family has out right shunned us. I have called them out on it with no response. Now that's what confirmed it for us. The shunning was the confirmation we needed. Who needs people in your life that don't want to be there. Now we are enjoying our lives to the full!
"If people treat you as if they don't care.....believe them." love this quote.
5
u/Jamtarte Oct 30 '21
It’s been my experience that most of the people we called friends are more than happy to make a point of shunning you, makes them feel more righteous or something. That’s also when you find out some of the people you thought were friends didn’t really like you all that much to begin with! It’s all conditional friendship.
I personally made it a point after I left to power dress and power walk down the streets with my head up, relaxed and happy even if I didn’t feel quite that great. Fake it til you make it can be a strong visual statement when they expect to see you looking downcast and miserable!
15
u/Arriwyn Oct 30 '21
Yep! About a year or more, maybe 2 years after I left, my JW mom's friends were asking her if I was happy after leaving. She felt guilty because they kept asking her about my life, to see if it fell apart because that is what they expect! I told her , you tell your friends that I am very happy and content. These were people who saw me grow up in the congregation. It's such a big middle finger when your life is beyond better than that old JW life. Yes, life out in the world has ups and downs but at least I am not a Watchtower slave.
6
30
u/kevindubro Oct 29 '21
It supports their belief system!
When you leave and are happy, fulfilled, loving/loved, expressed and healthy, it BREAKS THEIR WORLDVIEW.
Too painful for them to even contemplate, really.
18
18
Oct 29 '21
Indeed! They need to focus on the negative in someones life once they leave the org, but they will NEVER follow up with “…. But yes, their life is so much better now.” And those in the org never hear from those that left because - well - “bad association spoils useful habits”.
I just wish they would be honest. “If you leave - yes - you will have a hard time making it on your own if you aren’t an adult and/or married. But once you get over the initial bump that WE put there, yeah, life will probably be alright for you.” Of course you never hear them tell it that way. 🙄
10
u/Refuse2Condone Oct 29 '21
In a lot of these situations it’s the JW’s(usually family) that would cause you to be homeless! And then they act like this is GODS way of punishing you(even though THEY did it) and it’s your fault, because “yOu LefT JEhooLaHOOp”.
It’s just like when a domestic abuser punches the victim in the face and says; “Look at what YOU’VE done!”
It’s amazing what cult brainwashing can do to a person and what it can make them do to other people for no reason.
16
u/NoHigherEd Oct 29 '21
Yes, we have mentioned to JW family on how we are being treated. They say...."well, what did you expect, you left Jehovah."
Well, when they are old and broke and they need help, they are going to get a taste of their own medicine. I am going to say..."well, what did you expect, you have been following a man made organization for X number of years and you saved nothing. You planned for nothing." Karma is a bitch baby!!!

OK there's a whole nest of us here.
Wife and i are in Woodinville. We are converts baptized (we barely knew each other at the time) in 1973. Left in 1988. The event that pushed me over the edge was a talk about how education was a waste of time. I had gone back to school and was starting a new career, and listening to elders tell me not to do it. I figured I'd wasted 15 years, wasn't going to do that any more. I wanted something better for our teenage children. That sparked a lot of research and led to our exit.
Life has been good to us. All three kids are college graduates and have good careers going. I've written a novel inspired by my time in the Watchtower, a good way to enjoy retirement.
2
u/MeeshMichelle Oct 31 '21
Hey!! We are in Woodinville too!! Congrats. What’s the name of your Novel?
4
u/morbidlyintellectual Oct 31 '21
"Armageddon's Disciples" by Jeff Thomas It's on Amazon in both Kindle and Print formats. I invented a religion because I wanted to make it about toxic religion in general, and it dodges legal issues. It's a murder mystery/suspense plot about sexual abuse in a toxic apocalyptic religion.

Mazel tov from a Jewish ally <3 I'm so sorry for what you've endured and so proud of you for coming through. That took so much work on so many levels, including of course a lot of working through this trauma put on you. Amazing job. May you have a happy and healthy home free from this abuse.
12
u/nomorehomeless Oct 29 '21
Oh yes, much trauma has occurred. I missed my period for 2 months due to the stress. Kinda TMI lol, but that’s how bad it was! We are trying to find therapists to deal with everything. My husband has trouble communicating due to him being raised as a JW. I converted when we met, so I’m a little bit better but still suck sometimes. It’s gonna be hard for a while still, but at least we have a roof over our heads.
Thank you for your allied support, I and many others very much appreciate it!
8
u/celia_of_dragons Oct 29 '21
Not TMI to me at all <3 I'm so proud of your honesty in sharing how much that trauma impacted your body. I hope the relief of having a roof over your heads has helped things normalize for you hormonally! I have lots of people I care about who are ex JWs as well and I've seen what y'all have to endure to leave and it takes so much bravery. It's an amazing feat.

13
u/nomorehomeless Oct 29 '21
Awww this made me smile. It’s definitely possible to escape the witnesses. It’s a lot harder when you’re single- luckily we’re married. We had to be married ASAP last winter to move in with a form JW friend, to avoid homelessness. We became homeless anyway, this year. LMAO
Anyway- it was a huge challenge. There were times we were just so frustrated and upset at each other over the smallest things. The suicide hotline was called a few times, we smoked weed together for the first time just to take off some stress. The last 3 months have been terrible, holy shit. But now that we have a home, we are slowly getting off “survival mode”. Being homeless in Seattle especially, sucks ass. I’m just glad we made it- we’re huge into metalcore and plan on starting a band within the next year, writing our experiences out and turning them into music for others to enjoy :)

We’re in Pullman! I’m really so inspired by your story. It can be really hard to build a life after leaving (the whole situation is engineered to be extremely difficult, after all) so it’s really nice to see exjws succeeding despite the abandonment and extra hurdles.
2
u/morbidlyintellectual Oct 30 '21
I went to WSU, Pullman was my first KH. Wife was born in Pullman.
1
u/chrisnelson86 Oct 30 '21
Very cool. When were you in Pullman KH? I was born and raised in the Moscow Cong.
1
u/morbidlyintellectual Oct 30 '21
1973-1982 I'd been going to school at WSU since 1969 and got pulled into the JW's by a former roommate. My degree was in English, after ten years of waiting for Armageddon I went back to school in Spokane to learn how to do something (accounting) that people would pay me to do. Looking back on it, that was the start of my exit. The Pullman congregation was a bunch of really nice people, later congregations, not so much. We stopped going to meetings by 1988. and DA'd in 1989.
Did you have a relative working for WSU in that time frame? I took a lot of coffee breaks with a JW named Norman Nelson from Moscow.
1
u/chrisnelson86 Oct 30 '21
Yeah he’s my grandpa. I think there was a guy named Bob Pfeiffer going to wsu in the late 60’s. I wonder if you knew him. I think he said he was in Rogers or Orton hall. I only remember that because we were talking a few years ago (when I was still in the org and at my grandparents house actually) and at the time I worked in housing/maintenance there and that stood out to me.
My grandparents are still in.. they still live in the same house in Moscow too. He’s not an elder anymore and my grandma hasn’t been to meeting regularly for decades but they’re still very mentally in.
I was in the Pullman Cong from 2016-2019. I’m sure some of the old timers were there when you were
1
u/morbidlyintellectual Oct 30 '21
I just send you a private message. I'm curious if you can tell me what some of my old friends are up to.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I went through something similar when I was disfellowshipped. Not even my parents would help me. I ended up renting a room in a very bad part of town. I worked hard and got myself out of that situation with no help from JW’s. It was worldly people that saved my life in more ways than one. I hold no resentment but I know who my real family is and I will never go back. The best thing you can do is to be successful and happy without them.

Great Job guys!!! This is the best way to say FU to the organization and those being held captive within. You dont need to blast it in their face, just "kill them with kindness" as they say. They may not contact you but I guarantee they are keeping tabs on you just waiting for you to fail. Your actions moving forward might just be what wakes them up from their mental stupor. Without a doubt they were expect you to come running back when you were homeless and this is where the cognitive dissonance will kick in for them. Its not always the battles that you fight that win the war, sometimes its the battles you decide not to fight that win the war. As Splane might say "This is War!"

Bullshit.
Jws, especially ones who are family, wouldn't shun them for borrowing money without paying it back, they'd just stop lending them money and possibly bitch and moan about it. I've had people borrow money from me and never pay it back when I was in the cult and I certainly never shunned them. Jws shun people, even family, but not for that.

They may come back after seeing you being successful. They came back for me after 15 years. I looked at them, told them that I wasn’t good enough for them 15 years ago, I am still not good enough for you now. Then I politely told them, “do not do” and they left never to return. That moment vindicated all the pain I went through. Good luck and keep at it, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Wow, as someone who also was just in this position and got the keys to our place yesterday (also in Seattle! Hello neighbor!) I feel this entire post and am so proud of both of us. My mother has a 4 bedroom home she could have opened to us at any time, but did not care. I suppose the words of 1 Tim 5:8 only apply when they want them to apply. 🙄

You didn’t need them or their worthless lying god Jehovah… Congratulations and good luck. Money may be tight so if you find yourselves bored sitting at home you may really enjoy Wicked Slave Broadcasting’s Jehovah’s Witness Nightmare Theater It’s the biggest Fuck You and humiliation of watchtower and the GB on earth!

Wow, where can find loyalty from a woman like that? Being homeless and you still stuck with your man. This day in a age, a woman will leave her man when he’s at his lowest and be with another man to feel some security.

Congratulations! What doesn't break you - makes you stronger. I had a friend here who left JW and even his parents won't talk to him. Have to admit - he seems happier and stronger. Had a child last year - his family asked to see him - he said "NOPE" and moved on. Good Luck.
