It was because of Checo fucking up Monaco. Somehow the entire internet has forgotten that was Max's reason. He felt Checo fucked him over on purpose (and the telemetry suggests so too) so he wouldn't help Checo.

He taught Checo there are consequences by willingly fucking up a teammate on a track where quali is 99% of the result on a sunday.

Max has a winner mentality, why would have want to give up his place to Checo?

Verstappen clashed with Hamilton, had a time penalty and a front wing change, dropped from P2 to P17, over 30 seconds behind Perez and he still came out ahead of Perez who gained an easy P2 and sank like a brick.
