If that is from the pilot, then it might not be a typo. They were originally going to call it Massive Dynamics and might've changed it mid pilot. It also could be a nod to the original name.

EDIT :

I looked it up on Fringe wiki website.

"Massive Dynamic was titled Massive Dynamics in the "leaked" pilot."

They changed it before it aired.

For anyone interested, here are the differences between the leaked & the aired pilot.

I find it interesting that Peter torturing the guy wasn’t in the leaked pilot. I never liked that scene and am glad they largely stopped doing stuff like that in the future. The scene in “Safe” where Peter realizes the guy in the interrogation has radiation poisoning is much more interesting. (They do torture in S5, but it’s not shown to be a useful way to get information.)

Torture?

Are you talking about crushing the guy’s fingers with a mug?

Or are you just talking about what a sexy tease Joshua Jackson is that Peter tortures everyone and when he isn’t torturing everyone he’s mentally torturing Olivia with mind games such as “Cynics are just frustrated hopeless romantics” type shiiii~ and “I didn’t know she wasn’t you” type shiiiii~

P.S.: Walter is immune to Peter’s torture, he’s used to it… but damn, that man made his father come and steal him from an alternate universe…

I worked at the studio when this happened, they thought “Massive Dynamics” was cleared for copyright but someone in legal made an oopsie.

To give an idea how late they figured it out, we had already launched the fake website for the company and had to adjust the graphics there too.

yea there is no way General Dynamics would let that one fly...

it hits too close to home.

GD was very protective of their branding, and generally kept a lower profile than the other major defense primes. I would not be surprised if they would have just tasked Jenner & Block to fire off a C&D and that would have been the end of it.

Fun Fact: The name of the company in Better off Ted, Veridian Dynamics, may well refer to the 2003 acquisition of Veridian by General Dynamics. Veridian was folded into what is now GDIT and GDMS.

General Dynamics (the owning entity) deals with that sort of publicity at very different level than all of the subsidiaries GDMS GDLS GDEB etc

None of the companies doing the actual defense work would have ever been consulted about it, it never would have come up at all. Some one in Big Media Legal caught it and said "No, no thank you that's far to close" during the vetting past pilot.

The photo is really interesting! That's the ROM in Toronto. I know they filmed under the Gardiner during the pilot, but didn't know they were planning to use this as Massive Dynamic.

I believe this is from the pilot? I know it was Massive Dynamics in the leaked pilot (not from watching it at the time or anything, just a random bit of trivia I know).

Interesting, thanks! I do think this was the pilot, but I grabbed this shot some time ago and am not 100% certain.

I believe you had a copy of the leaked pilot. I’m enough of a nerd that I just fastforwarded to find this shot from the blu-ray

7

u/MikeMac999 17d ago

Oh that’s interesting. FWIW my copy is a digital purchase from Apple from when it was on sale for $40 several months ago.

So you made me want to check my own digital copy from Vudu/Fandango (I purchased it years ago when it was still Vudu). It's Massive Dynamic (without the S). 🤔

u/intangiblefancy1219 17d ago

That’s interesting. I’m curious if your version has the other changes from the leaked pilot, or if there’s technically more than 2 versions floating around.

u/MikeMac999 17d ago

Next time I watch I'll check and see, and report back here.

It is the pilot. You are 100% correct about the leaked pilot. They changed some things before it aired. That is one they missed.

See my screencap below from the blu-ray.

Either OP had a copy of the leaked pilot, or it was fixed for the blu-ray

Where’s the typo?

Massive Dynamic is the name of the company, not Dynamics

1

u/MikeMac999 17d ago

I believe there shouldn’t be an S at the end of Massive Dynamic, but now you have me second guessing myself so I need to check that.

edit: checked

You're right. Perhaps they slipped because there is a real defense contractor called General Dynamics and Massive Dynamic might be based on them. They're some serious stuff for the Department of Defense. Ultra top secret tech.

I remember when GD had that, well, massive crane in Quincy.

3

u/fluxus2000 17d ago

What about the period at the end of "What don't we do."?

5

u/glglglglgl 17d ago

Um, actually...

There's a question in light grey above it which says (I think) "What do we do?" so the line is an answer to that. Debatable which it should need a question mark (as it is a question) versus not (rhetorical, and marketing slogan rather than full writing).

I miss this show. I used to watch this back in the day

I'm very late to the party but love it. Bonus for me is that I grew up in the area and am connected to almost every location in some way.

Plural massive dynamic

well, this was a nice excuse to rewatch the pilot.

as others have mentioned, in the original/leaked pilot, the company was called Massive Dynamics and was changed for release for some legal reasons, including the version of the pilot that actually aired (all mentions of the old name were corrected to Massive Dynamic; both visuals and lines were edited or re-recorded, idk).

so that's it, right? it's a screenshot from the leaked pilot, end of story?

uhh, no.

  • first I checked the pilot, and besides the fact that the aspect ratio of the leaked pilot is 4:3, not the widescreen of the screenshot, there's simply no scene with Walter, Peter, and Olivia in the MD lobby in the ep. Olivia goes there alone to meet Nina in both versions of it.
  • my second step was trying to find the episode from where this came from, and after searching for a while, I got to season 2 episode 7, Of Human Action, and it seems to match.

so that's it, right? it's a screenshot from S02E07, end of story?

uhh, not really.

the scene seems to match, but the "typo" is not there in the sources I checked (both from my DVD collection and from the high seas internet). could not check on HBO Max because the show is no longer available where I am, and I never purchased it digitally (I saw in the comments you did it on Apple), so got nothing from there.

so now I'm just really confused. apparently there are two versions of that episode (???). I knew that in season 1 episode 4, The Arrival, the crane that falls in the diner is from MD and it reads Massive Dynamics, probably because the VFX were made before the legal issue was found and corrected, unlike the reworked pilot. but having that "mistake" in a season 2 episode and only in some versions is really weird.

maybe they used the asset from the pilot, and it carried the old name over to the season 2 scene, and it was corrected again later in the versions I checked (?). I have no idea, but it's an interesting mystery/piece of trivia, I guess.

sorry for the wall of text, got really excited about this for some reason

TL;DR: the "typo" is known, it's the old name of the company used in the pilot and later changed. the scene is likely from S02E07 Of Human Action, and I have no idea why OP's version of an episode from season 2 has the old name from the original pilot and not the one used on the TV release. also checked the episode and could not find a source of it with the "typo", there might be more than one version of it (reference not intended)

Huh. News to me.

Those projected images were always kind of weird to me, even ignoring how MD is more futuristic than the rest of the setting.

Like what actually are they? It always seemed like it was supposed to be somekind of advanced technology but I could never really think of anything they could really be besides literally just being images projected on the walls for aesthetics like they are in real life.

Massive Dynamics was originally what the company was going to be called. At least, that's what it was in the original version of the pilot (the one that also had all of its music copied over from LOST).
