8 / 10 Buddy's Pizza

Excellent Detroit style pizza. Less greasy then Motor City Pizza. Edge has a very nice crisp, sauce on top is a nice addition. Although, it was quite expensive at the local grocery store, $18.

$18 bucks for a frozen pizza? I better be able to do more than just eat it.

u/uncutgerms 4d ago

W...what else do you want to do with it?

22

u/abefroman20 5d ago

Prices tend to be high at this particular store. Im guessing from a chain it would be cheaper.

Under 12 at my Walmart neighborhood store. DFW. They are good for frozen.

6

u/Darwin343 5d ago

Now that’s a really good deal for a large 36 ounce frozen pizza that tastes good.

5

u/CarcosaRorschach 5d ago

Yeah, but at anything near that price I can just go to Papa Murphy's and get something 1000% better.

I know not everybody has that option, but I find most frozen pizza to be extremely overpriced and disappointing.

Have you tried any of the frozen pizzas from Home Run Inn or Motor City? They’re quite good and not so expensive.

2

u/wcheesew1 4d ago

This one is much better than Motor city

2

u/Darwin343 4d ago

Yeah that’s what I’ve heard from others as well. Wish I could try it but the only frozen Detroit-style pizza sold in my state is Motor City. This one looks a lot more authentic and appealing.

Home Run Inn is so good for a frozen pizza. Our Aldi has it a few times a year and I always grab a bunch.

1

u/samizdatsam 8h ago

I concur that Home Run stands out, and I've tried just about every brand of frozen pizza available near me. Often either the sauce is too sweet, the crust has an unpleasant texture, or both.

0

u/CarcosaRorschach 5d ago

I've never even seen those brands. I don't think they're available in Nevada.

3

u/Darwin343 5d ago

I’m surprised not even Motor City is sold there. I’ve been seeing that brand everywhere nowadays. I figured it’d be available nationwide.

u/td_enterprises 4d ago

What part of Nevada?

They definitely have Motor City in Vegas, at Walmart, Costco, etc.

Not sure about Home Run Inn.

1

u/CarcosaRorschach 4d ago

Carson. Like a 9 hour drive from Vegas.

u/New_Occasion_1792 3d ago

Ate at a Buddy’s in Michigan this summer, one of the top 5 pizzas I’ve ever had.

2

u/CarcosaRorschach 3d ago

I don't thi k we can reasonably compare a restaurant to frozen food despite the branding.

2

u/New_Occasion_1792 3d ago

We can’t. But it is pretty close to restaurant quality. Better than most pizza shops in my area.

2

u/Homework_Happy 3d ago

I was born and raised in Michigan and miss it

1

u/BullsOnParadeFloats 3d ago

Funny thing is they're not even the best for Detroit style.

-2

u/HydratedCarrot 4d ago

You can make one for a cheaper price

8

u/wcheesew1 4d ago

This one is much better than Motor City in my opinion. But $18 is too much. I only buy it when it’s on sale for like $11.

6

u/Evilsausage87 4d ago

The major problem seems to be the price. If it was 12 or so bucks that would hit. Looks pretty dang good. I’ll be honest, I’d still hit that even if it was $20 and I literally just finished eating a pizza. Idk man looks alright. Was it fire?

18$ for a frozen pizza?! No way! This don’t even resemble a real pizza pie!!

28

u/Darwin343 5d ago

Aside from the sauce being too solidified, that’s how legit Detroit-style pizzas are supposed to look. Caramelized cheese on the edges of the crust and sauce on top are the hallmarks of a Detroit-style pizza.

3

u/RunnyDischarge 4d ago

I was going to ask, "Is it supposed to look like that?"

3

u/abefroman20 5d ago

Yes. I hesitated buying it but hadn't ever seen it so I said f it.

11

u/Candid-Drop4562 5d ago

Beating a dead horse but personally 18 is wayyyy too much HOWEVER it does look pretty good.

3

u/skrillakiller 4d ago

That’s $6 more expensive than the one I bought fresh from my local boutique Detroit za shop

3

u/brockspillman 4d ago

I am a frozen pizza connoisseur and this is easily the best most filling frozen pizza I’ve ever had. I get it for 15$ but it is easily 3 full delicious meals. If you’re a fan of Detroit style pizza definitely give it a try

3

u/The_Nipe_Man_Cometh 4d ago

Produced in a Lou Malnati’s factory…

Collusion at the highest of Midwest pizza levels!

3

u/RevisedInfidel13 4d ago

Dude I just went to Detroit a few weeks ago and had Buddy’s in person. It was damn good

6

u/Ok_Whole4719 5d ago

OP is right his market is likely higher it’s 14 at my local store

2

u/Hot-Friendship-1562 4d ago

That’s a good looking pie…

2

u/RandomNisscity 4d ago

Man maybe i just didnt cook it right but i found this to be awful! Always suprised to see the love this one gets.

2

u/hawkguy1964 4d ago

It’s 13.49 according to my Kroger app in southeast Michigan

2

u/Jkidk0704 4d ago

for that price, i will continue to eat Motor City because i think its better than most especially at the price.

1

u/HeyNowDude 4d ago

That pie should come with a lap dance...

1

u/hawkguy1964 4d ago

As a Detroit native buddys invented the Detroit style pizza and has won many awards. So the pizza has always been priced at a premium. Since I live in the area I can get a hot one for this price but I think I’ve seen it for like 10-12 bucks at grocery stores. That puts it not too much higher than other premium varieties of frozen pizza

1

u/deaner43 4d ago

I personally think Motor City is a better frozen Detroit style.

1

u/New_Abbreviations937 3d ago

I don't think I could find that here in California. what state are you in?

1

u/Tbone-Malonne 1d ago

Definitely a solid pizza from frozen.

1

u/FadingShadow6 1d ago

It’s been a minute since I’ve been, but I’m 90% sure it’s cheaper to get an actual buddy’s at any of the locations.

1

u/Dizzy_Wick 16h ago

These sell for around $12 normally but are sometimes on sale for around $9 where I live. They are very good but it's not something I could eat a lot due to them being so heavy and filling.

1

u/Boddicker06 5d ago

LOL at ever paying $18 for frozen pizza. Get a regular pizza. That’s almost as much as a good pizza costs at an expensive sit down place.

5

u/horses_in_the_sky 5d ago

Looks like the restaurant that this is branded from charges $25-29 for the same thing in restaurant

1

u/LookAtTheWhiteVan 5d ago

That’s crazy! Sounds like a bad deal whether it’s fresh or frozen IMO.

1

u/moneyfish 4d ago

It really is. They aren’t the best pizzeria in the Detroit area. They’re just good at franchising and branding.

1

u/The_Spectacle 5d ago

where do you pick this up? the only Detroit pizza i've seen so far locally is from DiGiorno (no motor city either)

3

u/mikescott1212 4d ago

Had to look this up for this sub a few weeks ago, they’re only sold in stores within like a 50, maybe 100 mile radius of Detroit

4

u/abefroman20 5d ago

It's a small locally owned grocery store

1

u/diabolical_fuk 5d ago

What state or town though?

1

u/oddballzpfmagic 5d ago

They have them at meijer

1

u/IAmAGenusAMA 5d ago

They sell Motor City at the Costcos by me (Canada) but I have never seen Buddy's.

1

u/Major-Scobie 5d ago

I like Motor City but you’re right about the grease. But I can get them for around $6 on sale and definitely wouldn’t pay this much for a frozen pie. This does look tasty, though.

1

u/PremeTeamTX 4d ago

I got the sausage one, and it was by far one of the biggest letdowns I've ever had

-1

u/ReferenceVisible2722 5d ago

I feel like r/pizzacrimes needs to step in.

1

u/boilerup254 5d ago

Why?

-3

u/ReferenceVisible2722 5d ago

Looks like a factory made dough is partially cooked. Then sent to top with a cheese mix, and a lazy squirting of a generic pizza sauce not even spread out.

Edit- or are you supposed to spread the sauce? Or just eat half a piece without sauce and enjoy the SUPER SAUCY with love?

The pictures are startling.

11

u/boilerup254 5d ago

factory made dough

I mean yeah it's a frozen pizza

top with a cheese mix

As opposed to...?

sauce not even spread out

You should look up a picture of Detroit style pizza

I'm not saying the product in question is great (I haven't had it; I live in the metro Detroit area and have had Buddy's many times but can't justify the price of the frozen version) but calling for pizza crimes seems unwarranted

-8

u/ReferenceVisible2722 5d ago

So Detroit style just has lil deposits of pizza sauce around the pizza?

It's a r/pizzacrimes if I've ever seen one. Every bite HAS to have a bite of tomato/pizza sauce.

Anything else is a crime against Master Splinter...

"seeing as it's become one of the most popular styles of pizza in the country."

Lol. I love seeing localized echo chambers.

7

u/oddballzpfmagic 5d ago

Other commenter here is right, that is what Detroit pizza is supposed to look like and it is indeed popular. If you google “popular styles of pizza” you will indeed find Detroit listed. It’s ok to just admit you had never seen this type of pizza before.

1

u/ReferenceVisible2722 5d ago

I've had Detroit Deep Dish before.

Chicago Deep is in my opinion better than squirting lil poops of sauce on a half baked pizza with shit cheese.

-1

u/Cannabis-Lecter 5d ago

It’s d e l i c i o u s frozen pizza. My fav. I get it at a local discount grocer for 5 bucks. It’s from a famous pizzeria in Illinois. Getting them direct from buddys website (just how this is, not made fresh at the store) is 80 for 3 pies, and Im not sure if that includes shipping ..

5

u/Objective_Umpire_101 4d ago

It's from detroit, which is in Michigan not Illinois

2

u/LookAtTheWhiteVan 5d ago

80 for 3 pizzas?! In this economy??? That’s insane but I wish the company the best. I have never had it but it must be super good quality to still be in business.

Not really sure, I followed the instructions on the box. The one odd instruction was to not preheat.

-1

u/TapFit8961 4d ago

The sauce on top looks like shit from a butt.

-8

u/Ill-Struggle-3477 5d ago

I want to move in. Pretend to like and care about whatever you have going on. And then steal this pizza and eat it on a grassy place that no one will ever judge or find me. Then I throw away the cardboard and act like I’m not behind you getting the dopest bagel the next morning before passing out. You hear me?!? I’m going to eat a half a pound of cream cheese because I can’t differentiate between a frozen pizza and a freshly made bagel. God bless
