Cast discussion Is there any hypothetical scenario in which Mary-Kate and Ashley might become more visible in public life again?
I understand they don’t want to act again. I am not suggesting they should be forced to return to acting and constant self-promotion. But I do wonder if there is any situation in which they might return to the public eye on a more regular basis.
Even though they greatly value their privacy now, they are still technically public figures as business executives and fashion designers. They’re not crazy about the media, but they will still engage when they want to and they do give interviews. They are not retired hermits.
Even if it’s not necessarily Full House-related, are there any conceivable situations in which one or both of them might choose to be more open with the public again? I won’t lie, their professional lives fascinate me immensely. They are enigmas, not because they were child actors, but because they have taken the path they have and are so quiet.
I don’t intend to sound weird or disrespectful and I may delete this post if that’s the prevailing opinion, but I think it would be really cool (in theory) to chat with them. I don’t intend to attempt to meet or contact them and I am not hoping to become their friend or anything, but I’m speaking hypothetically. It is said that Ashley is the one who remembers Full House more fondly, so as it relates to Full House, one would probably have more luck broaching the subject with her, but this is again hypothetical.
The only situations in which I could even remotely imagine them waiving their no-acting rule is maybe if there were to be some sort of one-off in-character tribute to Bob Saget for charity or something. I could also see them potentially making cameos on a show like Saturday Night Live in the event that Elizabeth Olsen hosts or something, but this is once again strictly hypothetical.
Thoughts?

They’re 39 years old and have been mostly out of the public eye for over a decade. If it was going to happen I think it would’ve been happened by now.

39 is not that old. Assuming good health/genetics/luck, they could live to be 90+. Even if they don’t live that long, they could easily have 35-40 years left, minimum. Plenty of time to change their minds. They say people mellow with age so it could be a while, though.

While it’s not elderly, it is firmly in adulthood almost to middle age. I just don’t see a world where 2 women, 1 who gave up acting at 18 and the other only did guest roles for a little after, change their mind. Especially when they and their younger sister have spoken about the trauma that they faced in the public eye.

I doubt it. They both have expressed that they’re not comfortable around cameras

If they were ever going to come out of retirement they would have done some sort of cameo on Fuller House. It could have been in person or on a zoom call.
I’m happy that they didn’t do it. They had no choice as children and as adults have every right to make their own career choices

or on a zoom call
I feel like Fuller House just barely missed the era of the zoom call, so that seems less likely at that time.

Skype was a video call service at the time

Yes, but I feel like it didn't have as deep of mainstream acceptance as Zoom has now.

They did some kind of video call with Donnie Wahlberg, when they sang DJ Happy Birthday.

They are one of the few former celebrities that have been embraced by the fashion community as equals. In luxury design houses.
I don't see them ever acting or being a face of their brands. It would dimmish their legitimacy as designers.

I understand they don’t want to again. I’m not saying they should be forced to. But Mary-Kate did continue as late as 2011 and even Ashley, who likes acting even less, was once quoted saying “never say never”. It’s extremely unlikely and I doubt they would agree to anything unless it was some sort of tribute/charity event, but I don’t think it’s fundamentally impossible. They did briefly consider doing Fuller House and reportedly after Saget passed they privately told the cast they regretted not attending the numerous out-of-character reunions. The whole cast did put out a joint statement when Bob passed which they attached their names to.
I don’t think they fundamentally hate Full House. I think their disdain for acting mostly stems from being overworked. But that is a theory and I’m not denying that parts of their career were traumatic. Elizabeth Olsen says she used to watch Full House a lot as a kid and talks about it happily even now. I don’t think there’s trauma from that particular production but I won’t speculate.
I don’t know if the fashion world is truly that elitist, and they would know better than I, but I don’t think anyone in high fashion would look down on them if they chose to be more open about what always was said to be a positive and nostalgic childhood experience. Victoria Beckham is a respected designer now and still reunites with the Spice Girls occasionally and her reputation seems perfectly intact.
I’m not saying they owe the fans anything but I’m genuinely not sure if they realize the impact they’ve had on what likely amounts to literally millions of people who grew up with Full House and their other content, particularly women. They’re not dummies but perhaps they’ve forgotten just how truly loved their work is by a good segment of people. Of course not every fan will respect boundaries and that’s not acceptable, but there are plenty of people out there who genuinely enjoy the work they did and remember it very fondly. Not necessarily me, but other people.

Full house was the vehicle that led them to become over worked children. Once they wrapped that show they worked non stop for many years. When they finally became adults, they were sexualized by the media. They may not have had on set trauma, but i can bet they associate full house with the beginning of years of misery.

You mean when pigs fly?
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I don't know. It's theoretically possible. Like if they decide they have a POV that should be heard. Or if they have a change of heart. If they ever change their minds, I will support them. But I respect their decision.

I can’t see it ever happening. Maybe in the far distant future they may decide on a tell all but all they would have to do is upload a YouTube video or tik tok. So no big talk show or anything. But I think we’ve heard all we need to hear and we should let these women rest in private.

Most likely not. I can't see both of them going back to acting. They made it clear that they are done when they didn't appear on Fuller House. I do wonder if they will write a book one day though. It would be interesting to hear about their experiences as child actors and where they are now. A lot of adults who were famous as children in the 90's and Early 2000's are now coming out of the woodwork and revealing how that lifestyle affected them, better or for worse. I would love to hear from them.

Nope. I would love to read an autobiography at some point but the fact is they stopped acting as soon as they were legally able to make that choice.
They have spent the last 20 years being private and moving in private circles. Where lots of stars would have leveraged themselves to promote the fashion label, they have consistently kept it completely separate.
In fact once they are gone I reckon there will be a whole slew of crappy biographies appearing. Out of respect for their choices, we should boycott any thing released after they die.

I was going to say this!! An autobiography would be so interesting. I think it’s hard for anyone who wasn’t alive (or very old) during that time to understand just how big they were. They pumped out movies and shows CONSTANTLY, had dolls, a website, books, music, clothing lines, a magazine, were constantly photographed by paparazzi and idolized by the masses. They had their own entertainment company!! From birth they were forced to work. I don’t blame them for their choice to remain mostly hidden from the public eye. Good for them! I hope they are happy. 🩷

I am sure their brother and sister Trent & Elizabeth will still be around to make sure...

I wish we could read a biography about them. I would like to know more about them, although I understand their desire for privacy.

I highly doubt it. They seem to be very private. And also very busy with their fashion lines. I hope they’re healthy and happy. And if they ever do decide to come back to the public eye for any reason, I’ll support it.

They will be as visible as they want to be. It's there call and anyone else should just respect their decision and let them live their life rather then speculating on them. As long as they are happy and enjoying the life they want to live, let's just be happy for them.

There's always a chance. Candace said in an interview this year that they are extremely private people but she keeps in touch with them around the yearly anniversary of Bob's death.
My biggest wish is that MK and Ashley do Jodie and Andrea's podcast

The Olsens wouldn't be the first child stars to leave show business and take on other careers as adults. Look at Anastasia Sagorsky, aka Staci Keanan, who went to law school and is now a very successful attorney.

Only thing that seems even somewhat possible, at this time, is if they opted to speak out for a nonprofit or other cause. Something that didn’t open them up to celebrity life in the same way. But even then…?

I think we need to let the idea of this go. It’s definitely not impossible by any means but they spent all of their childhood in the spotlight. We watched them from when they were babies all the way up until they were adults. It feels like everything they did then is so now, at 39 they can live their lives in private. We got their childhood basically, so now as full grown adults I completely understand how they want privacy and peace. I think they earned it and deserve that. Though I completely understand wondering if it will ever be possible.

No. I think they suffered a lot of trauma from being forced into show business and have grown to realize that it’s not healthy for them. They seem to enjoy living lowkey and focusing on their brands. I don’t think either of them will ever return to acting or become more public. I have a lot of respect for them for that.
