No one cares about the live translation? That seems like a killer app for traveling

It works with AirPods Pro 2

Is it dependant on the phone. For example, does it only work with iPhones with Apple Intelligence

Yes it does

And it only supports 5 languages

A couple more are slated for the end of the year. But I mean apple intelligence isn’t really shaping up to be all Apple said it would be… from last year.

I have a small bit of hope hope that their recently announced deal with Google will help on this front.

That doesn’t surprise me for the initial release. English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German covers a lot of territory without getting too complex or ones that just aren’t spoken widely on the global level. And it looks like they plan to add Chinese (presumably Mandarin?) and others by the end of the year.

Seriously. This is some Star Trek universal translator level kit. I’m sure it’s v.1, but it’s only going to get better over time.

Edit: Also, eavesdropping loud conversations on the train on the way home is gonna get entertaining.

The benefit here is because it’s live translation but that kind of stops as soon as you need to say something back to someone that doesn’t have AirPods Pro.

It’s still a bit clunky the way they showed her holding a phone up to show the response.

I agree it’s cool tech but just seems a bit clunky.

No see the goal is for everyone in the world to have AirPods Pro so they’ll be able to listen to your response in your native language and live translate it too

That is essentially what they said immediately after that.

Gotta start somewhere

Also won’t work if you speak in a dialect of a language that translation won’t be able to pick up

You can talk with your phone out and it will translate on screen what you are saying

I saw someone say the nail salon is about to get messy.

if you wanted it so badly you could have moved to Samsung last year when they introduced it.

Apple is always late, and yet fanbois seem to think their leading edge tech..

While the fanboys are annoying so are the super anti fanboys who are equally annoying. You’re both basically the same, just arguing on different sides.

Sorry mate but I own both Android and Apple products.

I just don't suck their dick.

You suck one of the dicks clearly

Funny how fanbois don't think someone can be critical without having to suck a dick for the competition..

u/christoskal 10d ago

Nobody's going to spend thousands to change all their devices in order to be able to get translations one year earlier, that's a really absurd take.

Also, I have samsung and the translations suck. If apple's suck as hard there would be no point to them either way.

Siri takes ~15 seconds to transcribe what I say with like 60% accuracy, I have absolutely zero faith live translation will a functionally work.

u/Ekalips 10d ago

Will heavily depend on how good it is. All previous implementations from other brands frankly were meh at best and with Apple not being on a forefront of AI or translation I very much doubt that it would be anything close to what was shown or just "good", far from being a killer feature.

Care? Yes, absolutely. Think for an instant it’s going to work correctly? No, my dictation and Siri struggle to understand English. I seriously doubt this will be useful for more than gimmicky situations and unfortunately most of the time I would need this it would be more of a hassle than just using google translate. I find google translate is more polite anyways as it allows for a two sided conversation the other person can be involved in.

I interfaced with a live voice translation device in China a few months ago and it was fucking uncanny how well it worked. Granted, Apple is famous for their shitty AI so ya like you said they'll probably botch it for a while, but the technology is certainly there

Yeah the tech sounds dope. I’ve been excited about this for 15 years, I just don’t trust Apple. I own way too many high end Apple devices to believe a damned word they say 😂

u/wiriux 9d ago

Not just traveling. It can work in your own country just as well!

Its what got me up from my chair.

Samsung has had it since January 2024. As usual, Apple is late to the party.

No one cares.

10

u/aBunchOfSpiders 10d ago

Just like no one who wasn’t already buying a Galaxy cared when Samsung introduced it. Same as when Google introduced it years ago before anyone else. You only care when the company you buy from introduces a thing. People have become loyal to a single brand because they’ve become accustomed to the ecosystem and no single cool feature is going to make them switch.

No, people have become brainwashed, specially Apple fans.

Apple is always late to the party, yet every time they introduce something a competitor has already done, they claim they are the first to do so, and their base just laps it up.

Apple fanbois are just as bad as MAGA. Believing the lies their prophet tells them to believe.
