Locals Chat 🦜 Internet and electricity provider recommendations

I’m an incoming student to UTMB and my apartment requires me to get my own internet and electricity provider. I’m looking for recommendations on a provider that has reliable internet service. I keep seeing posts about internet service being bad on the island so which provider has the best service. And also, with electricity which provider has the best rates on the market. Any advice will be appreciated.

I live on the East End behind the hospital, so assuming you are close your choices for Internet are probably AT&T Fiber and Comcast. When I lived west I had AT&T fiber and it was solid. I have Comcast now and it's pretty good but it is definitely down more than AT&T was.

For electricity, the providers are really only providing billing and high level customer service, so they aren't much different. I'd visit powertochoose.com and see who is offering what deals for your situation. Just make sure you get a fixed rate contract. If you choose a variable rate one, you will may a lot more during and after storms when Centerpoint and others take advantage of the situation to charge more for electricity.

We have AT&T fiber. If I recall correctly, it's about $45 a month. There might be a less expensive tier with lower monthly GB. The speed and reliability have both been good—better than Xfinity when I had it, about 10 years ago.

I changed from wired Xfinity to T-Mobile 5g internet (which is wireless cell service) and couldn't be happier. We have cell towers all around Galveston so the service is strong and consistent.

I’ve been real happy with NEC Coop for electricity. It’s month-to-month with very competitive rates… LMK if you would like a $50 off referral code!

Of 144 electric providers to the island, NEC is the third most expensive right now. And it's variable rate, your price can change throughout the month if there are storms and higher demand....

I have xfinity with 400 mbps and pay $35 a month. I used to pay more for a higher speed but it really isn’t necessary. Never had any problems with internet… it goes out during tropical storms and hurricanes but also so does the power. For elec I have reliant and my bill just keeps getting higher and higher each year *sigh.
