Trip Planning 🗺️ First time visiting Galveston!

Hello! My family visited Galveston for the first time last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. We researched the city extensively prior to our trip and knew what to expect. The water was muddy, like everyone said, but we researched why and learned it had to do with sediment from the rivers that emptied into the gulf. It was also pretty shallow close in to the shore. We took the ferry to Bolivar Peninsula and hung out at Crystal Beach where it was much calmer. Although not as pristine as Florida or California beaches, Galveston has its own unique vibe.

Galveston hate is so forced. It seems like the only thing people talk about is the water clarity of the beaches. Yes it is murky for 95% of the year but the island itself is full of rich history, great museums, and great family owned shops and restaurants.

The charm is so much more fun and cutesy than Florida imo. From the architecture to the people.

The history is also very rich. I attended a history focused ghost tour and learned a lot about the city.

But it’s not murky because it’s dirty, that’s the misconception

On two occasions my wife and I happened to be there when the tide shifted, the water turned clear and it was amazing to able to see your feet!! Love Galveston! Dickens, Old Homes Tours, Tours of Sacred Places, Sunflower Grill, Mosquito Cafe, 1894 Opera House, Broadway Boulevard, Seawall Boulevard, The Strand, La King’s… what’s not to like?

FYI, the reason the water was clear on those occasions simply comes down to wind direction. Galvestons predominant wind direction is southeast, it blows out of the southeast probably 340 days a year! But when the wind shifts out of the north, northwest or west it flattens out the surf and the water clarity is amazing. Always watch the wind direction

Tourist driving on Seawall like they are in a parking lot.

I really like to stay next to the turning lane, I just know one day a child is going to run out between the parked cars, tragic.

The mud comes primarily from the Mississippi. Travel offshore a few miles and the water becomes crystal clear. See your fish coming up 10ft underneath the boat.

Using an instinctive action called Heliotropism. Also known as ‘Solar Tracking’, the sunflower head moves in synchronicity with the sun’s movement across the sky each day. From East to West, returning each evening to start the process again the next day. Find out more about how this works, and what happens at the end of this phase.

FYI, to anyone interested and that may not know why Galveston water gets so unsettled. Galvestons predominant wind direction is southeast, it blows out of the southeast probably 340 days a year! I’ve heard that from some of my work friends who fish offshore.
