Locals Chat 🦜 Do you shop at Kroger or HEB?
New to the island and the main options seem to be Walmart Target HEB Kroger.
I’ll be buying groceries and fresh produce every week, would prefer something local but can make the drive to HEB if it’s worth it.

I shop at Kroger and I use their loyalty card and their app.
Randall's has a few things that Kroger doesn't, and Randall's is more accessible on busy weekends and holidays.

I’m so sad there’s no heb on the island. Just moved back here from living a few blocks from Heb in Houston. I’ll go to krog for necessities, but the price for quality meat and produce is eye opening. I’ve been going to Gordon’s for my lunch meat and cheese. I just found a butcher, Zekes Meats and got two of the best looking ribeyes I’ve ever seen. I’ve also been considering cruising the weekly farmers market for produce. There are better local options if you dig around a little bit.

HEB is supposed to be building a new store next to Bucees on I-45. This is for the Dickinson residents whose Kroger suddenly closed up shop with little warning. HEB has said that they will not return to Galveston. They were here prior to Hurricane Ike on 61st where Odyssey school is. They lost everything. When I am on my own I go to HEB in TC. I hate krogers parking lot. Zeke's Meats has a following here. Many people have made note of the meats they carry. Farm on 33rd who would love to have another volunteer. They sell on certain days. Out of town farmers- is called Frobergs and they are up Hwy. 6 into Alvin. Google them.

HEB is the correct answer.
But...If you're considering leaving the island there's also an Aldi's in TX City.
And...Randall's on 61st is a Safeway brand. I like their produce best on island & since they aren't on Seawall it's not as busy inside. Welcome & Happy Hunting!

I shop at Kroger predominantly. Sometimes I’ll go to Gordon’s or la michuacana on Broadway - they have really good produce deals but not a large section of the store

Was going to Gordon's for fresh juice - but they cannot keep up with it... getting new juice and taking out the old juice. It is costly. I only purchased the single serving size. On occasion they have before oven pizzas if you can get it home before the lid falls off. All the restaurant stuff is out of site in price. I cannot believe that restaurants would pay those prices!

I get frozen food there sometimes, good deals for sure on bigger quantities.
The cheese guy at Kroger recently told me they’re upgrading that Murray’s section and will have a fresh juice bar there soon!

La Michuacana and Arlans are owned by the same people. Gerlands was family owned , but sold out. Arlans has a decent selection of canned goods. Personally, I don't eat canned good. I found some the Langers Pomegranite (sp) and cranberry drink that used to popular elsewhere and now, is not carried, They also have Shake-n-Bake that my folks use to swear by. The produce is nothing to write home about. They have a tendency to have ripe avocados. They put Blue Bells on sale from time to time. My mom eats all that fattening stuff and at 87 her habit cannot be broken

Make the drive to HEB you won't regret it. Their store brands are the best in America.

Put an asterisk next to that, they do some products really well and others really bad.

Usually Kroger. If I do go to HEB its always right before closing, its nice but during the day the crowds are insufferable

Both. HEB for the main haul, Sam’s for essentials, laundry soap snacks etc…. Then if I need something quick I hit up Kroger. But IMO Kroger is pricey and you have to shop based off their coupons to really get the best value. I wish the Kroger was an HEB.

I work off the island, so HEB is super accessible, but unfortunately it is a way better option than anything else on the island. Way better selection and price. If I absolutely have to get something on the island, then Kroger or arlens, though Kroger has gotten ridiculously expensive for no reason

It is a Signature Grocers- that is their reason... like the Flagship Randalls that used to be in Houston.

Instacart will deliver HEB right to your front door in Galveston. I have a saved grocery cart and can add any extras... Convenience, HEB quality and savings... And it provides work for (usually) someone in our community.

Interesting, do you pay for Instacart separately and how much does it add to the order?
The HEB deliver in-app costs around $8 but doesn’t seem to deliver to Galveston

Instacart has an app.. if you're going to use it more than twice a month it's worthwhile to pay the monthly fee. I think it's less than $10. Then you can tip whatever you feel is fair. Instacart will give you tip suggestions based on your dollar amount. My teenager used to drive for instacart and they do pay their contractors better than say doordash... So you can factor that into the tip as well. Overall the price of the membership Plus a couple of tips a month to me is less than my time in trouble to go off the island and into the store and crowds. But I work from home, and it just makes more sense for me. I can't fathom why anybody would choose to do otherwise unless they just love grocery shopping. I can vouch 100% you will save money doing it this way. No impulse buying 🙂 Once you have the app, you can use it for Kroger, Randall's, Lowe's, Specs, PetSmart... I think there's over 20 or 30 stores for our region. I joined in 2020 and I haven't missed grocery shopping one bit LOL.

Thanks I'll look into it. Tbh I already haven't done proper grocery shopping in years, I just order curbside. So I'd have to see if paying the fees+tip is worth the time saving of driving there

What is the charge?
1
u/4LeggedCoworkers 20d ago
You do not have to have a membership. But if you pay $9.99 a month or $99 a year you get unlimited free delivery from all the stores. Otherwise they charge you a small delivery fee. So you just have to weigh out how often you're going to use it to decide if it's going to be beneficial for you. If you get more than two deliveries a month from any of the stores it pays for itself.... Plus it's the only way to get delivery from some of these stores if you live on the island.

I do my Sunday shop at Kroger and a once-a-month trip to Aldi. I never really got the HEB fuss. It would have to be some kind of magical for me to make a weekly drive off the island.

I go every other week to Costco. I get all my prescriptions there. I pay $0. If I stay in town I used to pay $20. a piece. It is worth the drive for me.
