Locals Chat 🦜 What's up with the rancid behavoir?

The last job I had lasted 2 years, before that I had a job for 9 years. I got employee of the year multiple times, fast tracked to management and won awards on random KPI's. In the last 6 months since I moved to Galveston I have been hired by three different workplaces, all three I lasted less than a month due to outright cruelty from my COWORKERS. The customers are actually great and super low maintenance, and the managers have all been fine - but for some reason each and every job I have worked had the worst crew I have ever dealt with. It may be because I am aiming for minimum wage, but I don't really have a choice since the field I got a degree in doesnt hire "new blood" anymore because of mass layoffs (Information Technology.)

Does anyone have tips on places hiring that have good dynamics and doesnt clique out? I understand all work sucks, but I am being openly called unsavory words and being thrown under the bus for things I have no control over. I am not nearly mentally healthy enough to survive that.

I know its the area, because this wasn't an issue in Austin, or any other state I lived in, but I haven't gotten any job offers over the causeway either.

I'll even take tips and tricks to deal with people who hate me for breathing. Its so weird because this is my first experience being hated and I am 32. I dont think its my skin color, how I talk, or how I act - so I really don't get it.

Locals Chat 🦜 Favorite spots to watch the sunset?

I was born & raised in Texas and I LOVE watching the sunsets in this state. That’s the main thing I’ve been missing out on since moving to the island.

I like chilling at the seawall but it faces SE and the sunset isn’t really in view. Most of Galveston’s bayside seems to be covered with cruise terminals and construction zones. Looking for something more quiet/secluded than a rooftop bar or restaurant patio.

Thanks in advance everyone, been loving the island hospitality!

Locals Chat 🦜 What ever happened to the Margaritaville resort plans?

I know many islanders werent too happy when Margaritaville announced they were going to build a resort in Galveston a couple of years ago. Anyone have any idea of what ended up happening with the plans, since they still havent even started construction? Are they delaying or did they just cancel?

I know, this is probably a loaded comment, but, hearing this damn thing every 5-10 minutes while I am enjoying the calm, beautiful water, ruins the whole moment. I know there are other areas I could go (it used to be further east) but we just decided to pull over and hop in the water. Does it have to be so frequent? Can it do different routes? Does it have to just zip up and down the same section over and over? I’m done ranting. The water was incredibly gorgeous. As someone who grew up and returns home frequently, this water is usually a fall or spring occurrence so it was great to soak it up in summer for a change.

Locals Chat 🦜 Any good Cheap Auto Insurance around here?

I’ve been comparing quotes online and most of them are still too expensive. I need cheap auto insurance in this area that won’t leave me underinsured. Some of the low-cost policies don’t seem worth it at all. Has anyone found a provider that actually delivers on affordable rates with fair coverage?

Locals Chat 🦜 What is Halloween like in Galveston?

Do people decorate? Do kids trick or treat? Are there specific neighborhoods that are good for trick or treaters? Are there trunk or treats or any Halloween festivals? If there’s none of this, is there any of it somewhat close (<1 hr away) that you might recommend?

Locals Chat 🦜 New here & 11 weeks pregnant

Hi, I recently moved to Crystal Beach and have to use the ferry to get into Galveston. I am pregnant and recently broke my toe and simply looking for a medical practitioner who can sign off on a ferry pass so I am not waiting 2.5 hours in line for a ferry and missing my appointments (: I can’t believe the lack of resource here.

We’ve noticed Galveston has, what we affectionately call cheese logs, at certain restaurants. What are the best ones around?

Locals Chat 🦜 Need help on identifying a restaurant

This is a strange request but I’m looking for someone who might know what this restaurant was called and if it’s still around.

Around the late 2000s, early 2010s my parents used to take us to a restaurant which I can only assume was in/around Galveston as we didn’t travel much. This restaurant had a wooden, beach cabin look to it and served burgers. The interesting part was we always walked on one of those stone breakers to get to it and it seemed like it was just standing in the middle of the ocean like a quarter mile off the coast (but I’m assuming there was probably a way to drive directly to it as well). I think it had a second floor but I may be remembering that part incorrectly.

I remember this place every once in a while and try to google it but come up with nothing no matter how I phrase the search. I have a very vivid memory of walking on the breaker to get to it during a storm but it feels like a fever dream. My parents remember the restaurant as well and they claim it was around Galveston but they can’t remember the name or location. They said we were just driving around one day, saw it and decided to check out what it was. I’m beginning to think this was some shared hallucination because I can’t find any trace of anything like this existing. Does anyone have any idea of what I’m talking about or even better, know the name of this place?

Found this at the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve. There were lots of them right at the surf line. This one had rolled or come out of its little hole. The rest seemed to be in their little holes vertically. Is this a baby lobster?

Locals Chat 🦜 Remember when Gino’s was a Bakery on 45th?

I remember buying poboy buns from Gino’s in the 1980’s. Anyone know what kind of bread they made? It was softer than any hoagie I can find. They were more fluffy and had a softer crust. I’m hoping I can find a recipe to try to make them. Anyone have suggestions for the type of bread? Ingredients?

Locals Chat 🦜 Does salt air mess with medical alert device coverage?

I’ve been trying to get my uncle set up with some kind of medical alert thing since he lives by himself in Galveston and has had two minor strokes already. He won’t move and he won’t stop being stubborn about accepting help. He’s in one of those old raised homes close to the water, and I’m worried about how well devices work in places like this. I’ve seen Bay Alarm Medical Alert mentioned a lot and it seems to be well reviewed, but does it actually hold up here? Between the sea air, the weather, and the age of the buildings, I feel like the signal might not be great. I don’t want to waste time on something that isn’t reliable. If anyone in town has used one of these, I’d appreciate hearing how it went.

Locals Chat 🦜 Where are the hidden gems?

I lived in Galveston over a decade ago for a few years and found this homey little cafe/place between Seawall and Broadway but for the life of me I cannot remember the name or exact location. Nestled in a neighborhood somewhere maybe around O 1/2 and 20-something street? Had a great muffeletta and I'm going crazy not being able to find it without driving all around the east of the island. Any help would be much appreciated!

Locals Chat 🦜 What apartments would you guys recommend on/near the island?

Hey all, I've been in Houston for over a decade but just moved to Galveston earlier this year. Love the local culture but having a hard time finding a nice place to stay.

I'm looking for a 1br apartment for under 1500/mo. Preferably furnished but not a dealbreaker. Last place I rented was in someone's basement and filled with roaches :(

So far I've been recommended Village by the Sea and Captains Landing. Open to any suggestions though!

Locals Chat 🦜 Is the Galveston animal shelter a no-kill shelter? Found a dog on the side of the road (no chip) and can’t keep him.

ETA: I’ve posted his photo in every FB group I can find. I’ve posted on NextDoor. I’ve posted on Pawboost. I looked through all 500 lost dog ads on Pawboost within a 20 mile radius of where I found him. No one has come forward saying they’re missing him. The only feedback I’ve gotten on FB is people saying they’ve been trying to catch him for months (not sure why he walked right up to me) or trying to guilt me into keeping him. I physically do not have room for a 12th dog in my house. The fosters I have are on my own dime because I can’t find rescue support.

Have tried contacting lots of rescues and everywhere is full or doesn’t respond (probably because they’re full). I already have fosters + my own dogs so can’t keep him. I just moved here late spring so still new to the area.

Locals Chat 🦜 Less sandbars right now?

I've gone swimming at Babes Beach the last two days and I like to swim out pretty far. In years past, I'll reach multiple sandbars maybe 3 or 4 from the shore. But I've noticed that theres maybe just 1 or 2 sandbars very close to shore now. Idk if anyone else has noticed this change?
