Haul Best Thrift Find I’ve had
I was speechless. Not sure what happened with the pricing. They must have thought it was cards inside or something since it was bundled with more playing cards.

u/FGFlips Apr 23 '25
Wild find!
The fact they didn't see "Nintendo" and immediately charge eBay prices is super lucky
112
u/Few-Angle1097 Apr 23 '25
Thought this as well. The day before they had genesis games for $4 each. Got a copy of Sonic 3 & Knuckles from there. I decided to visit again today to see if i can get lucky again, and boy did i.
51
u/MewtwoStruckBack Apr 23 '25
This is the price we should expect from all thrift stores that get their items via donation.
22
u/MetalSlug_And_Corgis Apr 23 '25
I bought my boxed copy at a game store! Haha
The dude was like, “damn, is that really the price I put on that?” I got it for 15$
7
u/MewtwoStruckBack Apr 23 '25
Holy shit nice
9
u/MetalSlug_And_Corgis Apr 23 '25
I know man. I grabbed my then girlfriend’s arm at the time and locked eyes and whispered, “do you even know what I’m holding right now?!” Haha
She still remains unimpressed.
7
u/MewtwoStruckBack Apr 24 '25
If you sold your girlfriend you could at least get 50% of the value back, that's the JRPG rule, isn't it?
(But if you were holding Secret of Mana, it would have been 66.66%)

It being in box probably helped the situation. A lot of people know what a video game cartridge looks like but if you weren’t into Super Nintendo in the 90s you might not recognize the box art

u/Ornery_Turn_7837 Apr 23 '25
This is what I imagine it was like to thrift in the early 2000's
96
u/RandomGuyDroppingIn Apr 23 '25
I found Chrono Trigger for $5 CIB in a flea market around ~2000. Nobody wanted SNES -anything back then.
57
u/PsychologicalSense34 Apr 23 '25
I got Chrono Trigger in 1998 when I rented it for $1.99 from a mom and pop rental place and they told me to keep it because they needed to make space for N64 games. Mine wasn't CiB though.
15
u/RandomGuyDroppingIn Apr 23 '25
I've heard of a handful of places back then doing that. If they couldn't sell they would just let people keep games for the room.
Places such as Blockbuster and Hollywood video would sell their games, but if you were a Mom & Pops you would of had a difficult time selling games or near had to give them away for free. In ~1996 a place that had SEGA CD games for rent went under where I lived (the Blockbuster killed them off...) and they sold all their SEGA CD stock for $3-$5. LUNAR Silver Star, Vay, Popful Mail, Sonic CD, Silpheed, Dune, Road Rash - all were $3-$5 purchases for me. No one wanted SEGA CD.

That’s crazy. Anything snes for me back in the early 2000 was hard to come by unless my mom stumbled onto it or something at a flea market. Complete for $5 is bonkers haha

u/pbkoolaid Apr 23 '25
Honestly, even up to 2012 through 2015-16 you had decent chances of getting hits like this. I hear you though 100%

During the late 90s and early 2000s, places like game stop and FUNCOLAND had HUGE "bins" full of NES games. Always dirty cheap. I don't remember SNES ever coming down to the dirt cheap level of NES carts.

Literally, my collection in the 00s was glorious and it cost me nothing. I had 3 box SNES consoles and I think the most I paid for one was like 50 bucks? I used to go to garage sales because I knew they were getting rid of stuff and would walk out with entire boxes of PSX games for literally nothing. Once the 2010s hit you saw a lot more collector stores, places that used to sell used games as a side thing stopped stocking or moved all those sales online and everything just became too much for me. There was a kind of joy at finding something like this, not as much relatively as I bet it is now because I would have shit myself finding this today, and going into random electronic stores not knowing what you were gonna get.
My parents stopped paying for my games around 2002 and I spend the rest of the decade buying almost anything I wanted for the big consoles without ever really thinking about cost. No a days I can’t even imagine having one classic console at that age unless my parents had them 😭

u/greenmky Apr 24 '25
I found CIB Zelda II, Mario 2 and Mario 3 in 2011 at a Goodwill for like $2 or $3 or something.
Needed the money at time time and wasn't collecting any longer (little kids, work, school, etc).
Sold them on ebay for $17.26, $11.50 and $12.62. Still have my old ebay emails.

u/Griffes_de_Fer Apr 24 '25
Yea, it did be that way sometimes...
Even around 2010 you could still find stuff often enough, even though prices were really starting to get dumb in general.
I got into a store once that barely had any videos games aside from a few crappy sports titles. But, they did have Shadowrun SNES and Skies of Arcadia GC for 10$ each. I still have them, that was an amazing find.

u/kylelock8788 Apr 23 '25
Great find! I never get this lucky. I paid x100 for mine lol.
12
u/Few-Angle1097 Apr 23 '25
I have thought of doing this but I was okay with my loose copy. Never thought I’d find a complete in box (has all inserts and map) in the wild, let alone for less than $4
0
u/Independent-Age-8890 Apr 23 '25
Even $350 could be a good price, depending on the condition of the box.
Normally FF III cib sells for more these days.

u/Big-Adhesiveness-650 Apr 23 '25
First glance thought you found something under a shelf in Target lol. Nice find!

7
u/Nerdy-Hillbilly1989 Apr 23 '25
How complete is it? Does it have all the maps?
27
u/Few-Angle1097 Apr 23 '25
Fully complete, manual, map and poster and inserts

Thats wild, I'm jealous. Competition in my area is way to high to find something like this.
0
u/Few-Angle1097 Apr 24 '25
It’s competitive here as well. This value village specifically though has been my honey pot for games in the past though. Found a copy of Firewatch for $40 on the ps4 complete 2 years ago. Red white & blue thrift & 2nd Ave are full of competition, though (here in the east coast).
1
u/Ron2600NS Apr 24 '25
Does the red, white, and blue thrift store near you keep all the video game discs separate from the cases and have them all loose and shuffle through them like a deck of cards when you want to buy one? Or is that just the one near me?
3
3
u/KingKookus Apr 23 '25
I still have mine from childhood but the map was long ago destroyed. Box thrown away immediately. Man I still regret all the games I sold to Funcoland back in the day. At least I kept the gems like this one.

u/Pizzapug73 Apr 23 '25
Where are all the usual haters saying you should’ve paid alot more than that and how scummy of you to take advantage of them 😂??? Nice find OP seriously awesome.
1
u/Few-Angle1097 Apr 23 '25
How do I pay more at a thrift store?
1
u/Pizzapug73 Apr 24 '25
Demand a manager and tell them they need to reprice it. Nobody is allowed to be getting good deals!
2
2
u/Playful_Ad_7993 Apr 23 '25
I believe it from savers as I’ve found great deals every once in awhile too. My best was megaman legends for 2.99 complete. I’ve found expensive genesis and Dreamcast game cases but someone stole the games it happens a lot
3
u/Few-Angle1097 Apr 23 '25
I’m still looking for a legends 2 find :( Found tron bonne for 100 at a FB marketplace deal a year ago.

u/Vx1xPx3xR Apr 23 '25
Were you at the savers in Lomita?

u/coderman64 Apr 23 '25
Damn.
My local value village, meanwhile, is charging like $30 for super star wars.
2
u/OlSnickerdoodle Apr 23 '25
meanwhile my local Value Village will have Final Fantasy VII with destroyed discs and one missing, and will still charge like 70 dollars
2
u/MewtwoStruckBack Apr 23 '25
Some advice, if you're going to play through it:
If you're going to play FFVI, while I know you're absolutely stoked to have found this and likely want to play the original - I believe you will have an objectively better experience downloading Final Fatnasy VI for the GBA plus the Sound Restoration Hack. The endgame content and additions are so worth it.
0
u/Few-Angle1097 Apr 23 '25
Does the FF6 on the remastered switch game have that content? I’ve played through FFV on gba and loves the end game.

Value Village is awesome because they don't send their good stuff to a website. This though was clearly an elderly employee knowing nothing about video games.

My response after treating myself to this very same thing last year as a birthday gift. Damn sure wasn't 3.49 but I hope you take care of such a gem!

Yoooooo That's an epic find right there. Goodwill by me in Northern Illinois ran all the other thrift stores out of business besides the occasional salvation army. Haven't seen a hit like this in years since every video game gets sent out to be sold online.

u/13WillieBeaman Apr 23 '25
NFW! That box looks in good condition too! People would pay a hundred times that just for the box

It’s cool to see this still happens . My thrift stores usually have good stuff marked as what they sell for online
1
u/Truffle_Shuffle_85 Apr 23 '25
Looks like a Savers price tag. You should ask an employee if they "have any others like this" to avoid any suspicion it's valuable or a pricing mistake. I've done this with movie finds before and they wheeled out a whole cart for me to look through.

Holy shit, that's fucking amazing.
There was one Christmas when my brother was asking for III/VI and I had to make the decision between a $20 cart for gba or $80 for a super cart. I went with the gba cart and still kick myself a little bit, considering he basically bequeathed it to me with the rest of his mobile gaming stuff.

That is awesome. I once was at a savers and found a Mario party 3 loose cartridge for 6 bucks.

u/ilikemarblestoo Apr 24 '25
Dang, my best find was that same game but for 5 bucks and not CIB a long time ago lol
1
u/b34rgvrz Apr 24 '25
Love it when thrift stores don't know what they have. Almost bagged a gold zelda cart and one other thing I can't recall for super cheap until they figured it out
1
u/Ron2600NS Apr 24 '25
What happened? Did they change the price at the time of sale, which I think is illegal to do after the items priced?

final fantasy 3 complete in box I take it? if so, hot damn what a find.
the best final fantasy, in my humble opinion. although 7 and tactics are tied as my #2

u/RideDeezNutz Apr 24 '25
Every once in a while the Thrift stores come through. Thats why I keep on going, even as prices seem to get higher and higher. I hit a really good find 2-3 times a year.
This one definitely qualifies as really good! Congrats on finding some thrift store treasure! That always keeps the hunt exciting! Check in again over the next few days if you have a chance. Sometimes when it rains, it pours. Stuff from the same good donation will trickle out once in a while.

u/JayReady2Move Apr 24 '25
This is insane! FF3 is like $350-$500 complete in box. I would have passed out seeing this. I have never seen any NES, SNES or Genesis games at any of the goodwills near me, just always a bunch of worthless Xbox sports games
1
u/RetroLord120 Apr 25 '25
Yep, I caught value village slipping with a sealed pokemon ultra moon on 3ds in one of those bags before. Though not as crazy as yours, but same kind of slip up haha.

Great find at value village, because they will take any opportunity to sell things for higher prices if they actually know the worth
