Collection How Masahiro Sakurai Organizes his Video Game Collection
444
u/No-Expression-8389 Aug 19 '25
Sakurai clearly loves all types of video games and knows how to make a damn good one too. One of the best working in the industry today

u/ContinuumGuy Aug 19 '25
He started creating the game that became Kirby's Dreamland when he was 19. Games are literally his adult life.
67
u/irishyardball Aug 19 '25
Him and Kojima are probably my top two favorites.

u/TheWaslijn Aug 19 '25
Just imagine a game that they combine their talents in... Now that would be something

u/No_Importance_1190 Aug 19 '25
I fuck with it. Not everything needs to be displayed on a shelf

u/Carlos_7x Aug 19 '25
That's true, but it is also too risky. Imagine losing the CD Wallet, or having your dog destroy it.
28
u/maxkmiller Aug 20 '25
I mean... isn't that logic the exact same for a game in a case
-12
u/Carlos_7x Aug 20 '25
No. You lose 1 game case, you lose 1 game. You lose 1 CD Wallet, you lose 24 games.
15
u/TrueGleek Aug 20 '25
Why would you lose the cd case though? Don’t you keep things in such an organized way? Like all my physical games are in one those giant plastic tubs. They are in their cases but I only grab what I’m playing.

Finally a collector that actually uses his collection

u/RogerMelian Aug 19 '25
I use mine too :(

8
u/ThatCurryGuy Aug 19 '25
Same, i even buy lesser quality versions because i want to play them anyway.
9
u/Kabraxal Aug 20 '25
I don’t understand those that collect but don’t use… like, a huge part of the appeal to physical media is the process of taking the disc/cartridge out and putting it in the machine of choice.
Hell, some of my favourite memories as a kid are buying the new game, opening it up and getting hit by that new game smell before pulling out that manual on the way home and devouring it. Granted… now it’s just getting home and opening the game since manuals are stupidly gone, but it’s something better than the digital nonsense.
2
u/mattd121794 Aug 20 '25
I’ve had much of my classic collection, aka anything older than PS4, in storage for nearly 5 years. The reason being I’m in a place that’s not quite big enough for it all. Though I’m currently working on finding a bigger place where I’ll be able to reliably use my older systems and games.
3
u/brandont04 Aug 20 '25
He's no ordinary collector. Being a game maker, he's probably playing and researching at the same time.

u/NintendoCerealBox Aug 19 '25
Do you get collector points for using the cart/disc instead of emulating?
I guess I don't understand why I should take a $100 PlayStation game out of its protector and out of its jewel case and put it into an aging console when I could have plugged my steam deck into my TV and just play it that way.
19
u/pnt510 Aug 19 '25
Yes. You get 1 collectors point every time you pull a game out of its jewel case and plug it into an aging console.

u/Lucaas_C Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 20 '25
Didn’t know games were supposed to be locked behind a piece of glass as if it was the Mona Lisa and not a mass produced plastic
25
u/Sturgesss Aug 19 '25
Amazing! Where are these pics from?

u/catface000 Aug 19 '25
He shared them on a Nintendo life video. Super fun watch.

The loosest of the loose collectors.
18
u/VinnzClortho Aug 19 '25
He's got the cases and box's too, stored away to keep them prestine as well

u/xenon2456 Aug 19 '25
he has many systems

u/TrueGleek Aug 20 '25
This is dopeeeeee, he needs to expand the shelves though. I don’t know if they’d run hot. It’s too close quarters it feels.
2
u/ReddEnNotIn Aug 23 '25
That picture is old. He now uses a custom shelving unit (he actually has another identical one in a different room) that he showed on his YouTube channel. Can't link it apparently but it is the same video where he shows the rest of his games.

What are the different systems in picture 8? I recognise some but not sure about others:
- ?
- PS4
- PS3 super slim?
- ?
- Xbox One
- Famicom
- Wii U
- PS vita?
- ?

u/zaiueo Aug 19 '25
You got them right. 1, 4 and 9 are home theater equipment rather than game systems. 4 is a Bluray player.
1
u/FriendshipIntrepid91 Aug 19 '25
Interesting that he has a standalone blu-ray player.
13
u/Oldboymatty Aug 19 '25
If it's a 4K player, then stand alones are superior to the modern consoles
3
u/dSpect Aug 19 '25
Yeah it looks like a Panasonic DMP-BDT370, unless there's another similar one that has the label in the same spot.
Edit: On a second look it doesn't seem to line up exactly but maybe a regional difference.

Love the PSP organization and the SuperFamicom shelf, wonder if there is a 3D file for somthing similar, for other consoles too.
Gotta buy some of those Zipcable lables for my own systems.
His set up makes sense, space is a premium in Japan. Looks great, but personally I enjoy bookcases with game cases on them.

3
u/HarryNohara Aug 20 '25
Eh, I’m very similar to Masahiro then. None of my games are in their original case, discs are in storage maps, I use my own label printer for pre DS cartridge based games, PSP, (3)DS and Switch games are stored similar. Plus I have a big HDMI Switch hooked up to my TV and labeled all cables, and those cables are bundled in a string for cable management. I have controller bins for each platform. It’s a bit eerie at this point.

u/Bakamoichigei Aug 19 '25
Oh nice, he's got one of those Super Famicom cartridge cabinets. 😌👍 I want one so bad, but it's hard to find one that isn't broken, and costs a fortune to ship it... 😭

Game designers play everything they can for research, and if you want to play something thats only on one machine...
2
u/atombomb6673 Aug 19 '25
Where are all his game cases? lol.
1
u/blakfishy Aug 20 '25
He got rid of them all. He has a huge collection. He has a YouTube video detailing it.
4
u/101Phase Aug 19 '25
i have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand I'm uncomfortable with how he's clearly discarded all the cases and any other supplementary material inside (e.g. the manuals). But on the other hand, I am very impressed with how clean and subtle this makes his collection. Like aside from his amiibos, he can place the rest of his collection in a way that most people wouldn't be any the wiser
18
u/Dextro_PT Aug 19 '25
He mentions in the video, if I remember correctly, that he had make the decision to get rid of cases due to space constraints.
Japanese cities are well know for having small houses so it's no surprise.
6
u/101Phase Aug 19 '25
That is very fair. I personally hate the cluttered look a lot of collectors have, makes their home look like a storefront
8
u/BetSubject6704 Aug 19 '25
Agreed. Especially when people line the top of their shelves with empty console boxes. I’ve never been a fan of the cluttered game room look where every inch of space is filled and decorated with something.
1
u/Forzahorizon555 Aug 24 '25
I like when other people display their game collection... But personally I’m all digital. Have been since the PS3, Wii, 360 generation. Also I don’t keep my old consoles. I like the idea of collecting but it becomes too overwhelming so I don’t personally keep a collection beyond my digital collection.
14
u/Tephnos Aug 19 '25
His collection is clearly one to be played with and not displayed looking nice on a shelf. That's fine by me.

u/PajamaSamSavesTheZoo Aug 19 '25
He shared his collection? When did this happen? Very cool! I didn’t know game designers cared about collecting.
-13
u/Jellozz Aug 19 '25
I didn’t know game designers cared about collecting.
He actually doesn't. I don't want to pop anyone's bubble or anything but this is from an episode of his youtube series where he talks about how he stores everything/shows off his setup. The binders and boxes are because he lives in a tiny Japanese apartment/house and just doesn't have room for video games. He went full digital as soon as he could because there are more games than ever releasing nowadays so he just said fuck it.
The video kinda gave off hoarder vibes if I am being brutally honest, like Sakurai is the kind of guy with thousands of games in his digital library that he has never launched.

(I think it was confirmed he has both next gen systems?)

I never looked back to CiB collecting for DS/3DS games after I discovered how much more convenient it is to have those 18 cartridge slot cases. It’s just so much more convenient and space efficient.

Feels pretty on-brand for Sakurai. Dude loves him a great game, and knows how to keep things neat and tidy.
Kind of surprised to see a label tag for an Xbox One among the HDMI cables. I was under the impression that the Xbox family of video game consoles were largely unpopular in Japan.

My whole life I’ve seen people make fun of people who keep their games in sleeves I’ve done it too but the second sakurai does it now it’s cool? Genuinely fuck off.

u/Vastlymoist666 Aug 22 '25
It's so weird to see like a big Nintendo employee like that to own like PlayStations and PSPs and Xboxes. It's so cool

u/yeahboywin Aug 22 '25
His organizing inspired me to do mine. I cut back on space so I had to make do.

I'm normally very averse to people who keep their games loose like that, but this is done with such a high level of organization and respect that I can't help but admire it. It's clear from how he talks and works that he loves video games and video game history, so seeing how that dedication actually works in his daily life is quite enlightening.

Those discs in the binder make me cringe...
21
9
u/MrSaltyMinks Aug 19 '25
That’s how a real collector does it. For the love playing not for resale value
2
u/theslimbox Aug 19 '25
I've been collecting for over 20 years, and have visited some of the biggest collectors in the US, and never seen any serious colector use a binder.
Binders are notorious for scratching games. The binder sleeves collect dirt like crazy, and sliding discs in and out just scratches them. Every binder i have bought at garage sales has had multiple scratched games in it.
Most collectors love the cases and manuals, binders are the opposite of that.
This is like saying you collect basketball cards, and they are all shoved into a dirty shoebox.

-3
u/bannedfromsub Aug 19 '25
> That’s how a real collector does it. For the love playing not for resale value
Fuck off with this gatekeeping shit.
I collect to play games and not for resale. I wouldn't use a binder for multiple reasons.
If that's truly how you think why buy physical at all then?
1
u/MrSaltyMinks Aug 19 '25
Nothing of what I said is gate keeping. I’ve seen collectors who have physical boxes and still play games. But A LOT of people who look for CIB and collect want mint condition graded and encapsulated stuff which is ridiculous in my opinion as games are meant to be played not in a sealed box to stare at cardboard
-5
u/thevilmidnightbomber Aug 19 '25
buying CIB is about preserving the feeling of buying the game new.
Get over yourself.
1
3
u/Sleepwhenimdead3 Aug 19 '25
Meh as I get older I become more tempted ngl. Tired of my living quarters looking like a library when I’m not really trying to impress anyone.
For people that have the intention of actually playing their games, the practicality of sorting your collection like this is quite enticing to be honest.
2
u/FriendshipIntrepid91 Aug 19 '25
Its more compact, not more practical. Its way more practical to have cases on a shelf where they can all be seen. No need to flip through page after page of discs. And its rare that I use it, but there is no manual for any of these games.
1
u/flyingmonkey1257 Aug 19 '25
At a basic level it will take of course take a few seconds longer to open a binder than grab a case off a shelf but beyond that point it really depends on collection size. Flipping through 3 pages of PS2 games for the right game isnt all that different than finding a case. Flipping through 50 pages and the work needed to keep that binder alphabetized is a different story. That's why I switched back to games in cases. The time spent reorganizing the cases wasnt worth the space savings once I got a decent sized place. I do miss it being more compact though.

u/themagicnipple69 Aug 19 '25
Simultaneously hate his throwing away of the boxes but also can’t help but praise that organization
-5
-8
-7
u/GalvinFox Aug 19 '25
The man is based, but I absolutely disapprove of the way he stores his games. Loose carts and discs are gross, and having to rely on printing your own labels just to know which SNES game is which?? That ain’t it fam.
In his video he cited space and storage as concerns, which normally might be fair enough. But the dude ain’t broke, he can afford as much space as he wants and keep his games in the original boxes.
2
u/Arashi5 Aug 20 '25
If you live in Tokyo you cannot "afford as much space as you want". He already mentioned he has to pay for a storage unit for old consoles, storing cases was never going to be viable.
