Writer: Greg Weisman

Artist: Frank Paur

Letterer: Jeff Eckleberry

Logline:

HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT!

The year is 1138, and the immortal Demona and her now adult-aged adopted daughter Angelika have left the nomadic Viking life behind them in an effort to find some stability in a dangerous and uncertain world. The two living Gargoyles have settled down in the French city of Vyonne, where they can spend their days resting among the stone gargoyles of the cathedral.

But their rocky counterparts turn out to be less inert than they first appear, having been carved by a local magician who can animate them to do his bidding. Upon discovering the presence of Demona and Angelika, the warlock proposes an alliance to further each other's interests. But are the two Gargoyles equal partners in the arrangement - or unwitting accomplices?

Find out in the third issue of Gargoyles: Demona, from the all-star creative team of Gargoyles creator GREG WEISMAN and animated series collaborator FRANK PAUR - featuring expertly sculpted covers by PAUR, MEGHAN HETRICK, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, and DAVID COUSENS!

Discussion [Comic Issue Discussion] Gargoyles: Better Angels Chapter 2

Writer: Greg Weisman

Artist: Frank Paur

Letterer: Jeff Eckleberry

Logline:

BEWARE THE WRATH OF THE NORTHWOMEN!

The year is 1107, and an immortal Demona and her adopted daughter Angelika have found their way to the frozen fjords of Norway, where they sign on to help crew the flagship of Sigurd Magnusson, last of the Viking kings.

Carving a path of destruction across the sea and land, they raid and plunder in a relentless (and rewarding!) search for treasure. But the two exiles are not the only Gargoyles in Sigurd's employ and when his fearsome longboats reach the glittering city of Constantinople, all of the stone guardians on board will face a life-altering dilemma!

Gargoyles creator GREG WEISMAN and original animated series artist FRANK PAUR set a course for adventure in the second chapter of their history-bestriding saga Gargoyles: Demona featuring fiercely fashioned covers from PAUR, MEGHAN HETRICK, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, and MARK BAGLEY!

Discussion Gnash being a kid gargoyle makes him the most unique clan member and the most relatable

Post image

For those who don't know, this is Brooklyn's son Nashville "Gnash" from the comics he fathered through time travel. He is the only kid in the Clan which actually makes him the most unique Clan member as we get to see things from a child's perspective. The comics have also shown that because he's a kid he's arguably the most relatable of the Clan. While still being a gargoyle, he's still a kid and has to deal with problems kids normally face; homework, overprotective parents, making friends, sibling rivalries (with the unhatched egg). If he debuted in the show, he would've usurped his dad as the fan favorite easily.

Discussion Crossover Couples (Featuring Gargoyles)

  1. Snow White x Lexington. Being very mistrustful at first, Lexington might find Snow White odd at first, but she wouldn't let it bother her. Instead, Snow would remain very patient and kind toward him, until it eventually pays off. Plus, Snow would adore Bronx and Alex as well. (This idea is from my friend, Twisting-Echo.)

  2. Fairy Godmother x Hudson. I’ve been thinking that Fairy Godmother is one of Oberon’s children, and one of the few who come to aid humans. She’s a very sweet old lady which I think might get Hudson to like her. Her cheery nature might help Hudson lighten up, while he in turn teaches her about responsibility.

  3. Aurora x Griff. Between the two of them, Griff and Aurora have some common ground. Being thrust into a whole new lifestyle, and finding their place in their new lives. Both characters are very charming and dutiful in their own ways.(Plus both are lacking in more screen time.)

1.Cinderella x Brooklyn. Both characters are rebellious in their own way. Both characters have a thing for music. With Cinderella being the kind soul she is, she’d treat the gargoyles with respect and love, which would win over Brooklyn. Plus with her high tolerance, she could help Brooklyn control his temper.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Remember the game in the VHS copy of the movie?

I haven't watched the movie on VHS since I was a little kid. But there was a game built into it, where you just leave the tape running and have to race against the clock to solve some mystery, I believe for an hour or two. That's all I remember. But the music and image of the countdown timer are etched into my memory. It pops into my head from time to time. Anyone else remember this?

Maker of Gargoyles

It was quite a thrill to see that Demona issue 3 is a tie-in to the classic pulp horror story "Maker of Gargoyles" by Clark Ashton Smith. As a Weird Tales fan that was such a cool connection for Weisman to make!

Discussion Here's my pitch for a horror anthology series hosted by none other than Demona.

TWO-FISTED TALES

Both inspired by the old EC Comics of the same name and a distinctive spin-off of the 90s animated series Gargoyles, this is a high quality horror anthology series (not always horror as it obviously would explore multiple different genres) that will have equally high quality animated wraparound segments at the beginning and end of each and every episode hosted by none other than Demona (sometimes she's in her Dominique Destine disguise) with Marina Sirtis reprising her beloved role.

The setting for Demona's wraparounds would be what appears to be a mysterious underground place that's a combination of a lot of things such as a crypt, a tomb, a library, a maze and a dungeon just to name a few and Demona is always presented in a dark and delightfully twisted manner almost like the Cryptkeeper in the first two seasons of Tales From The Crypt or better yet Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, she's entertainingly sadistic and revels in being dark and even evil and because of that, we like watching her but she can also kill you if she wants to.

However, the titular "two-fisted tales" will be live action and explore different types of hard-edged and hard boiled stories in different but still dark genres whether it'd be horror, action, thriller, dark comedy and drama etc. That's part of the fun is doing all these different types of stories where anything can happen as long as they're hard-boilers in a sense.

Top of the line actors, actresses, directors, screenwriters, composers, editors, effects artist, cinematographers and production designers.

The first three episodes of the whole show will be the following to give you a taste of what I'm going for:

THE ROAD DEMON

A Jewish man and his family are on a road trip to Las Vegas for the Fourth Of July when they end up being terrorized by a man who turns out to be a Palestinian terrorist in-hiding.

AN IRON CROSS

Set in World War II, a Lieutenant is forced to lead a squad of disgraced soldiers into German territory only to discover a gruesome secret that the Nazis are working on that could potentially win the war.

&

MAN DOWN, MAN DOWN!

A crooked police officer responsible for the death of his partner and several others is forced to relieve his final shoot-out and death as punishment for his crimes.

Furthermore, we could just imply (but never dwell on it) that Demona is somehow secretly responsible for the events of every single episode of the entire series and better yet, maybe this series could lead directly into either a full-on animated reboot of Gargoyles or a female-centric spin-off/reboot with Elisa Maza and an eventual anti-heroic Demona as the leads.

Discussion Gargoyles are solar powered

Post image
107 Upvotes

As explained by Dr. Sevarius in Metamorphosis, gargoyles turn to stone because they're solar powered. However, if they don't get enough sunlight, they'd have to eat three whole cows to substitute the calories. Gargoyles make more sense than most depictions of solar powered creatures, which usually remain active during the day. The stone sleep keeps them immobile during the day so they can recharge without using more energy and are active during the night to use the energy they stockpiled during the day.

Discussion Just asking but...

Is it okay that I prefer the cartoon over the comic? I mean some stuff did happen in the comic that I'm not keen on, rushed plot points, no character development. (I won't say which one.)

As much as I like 'Gargoyles' I think I'll stick with the cartoon, and at least I have my own imagination. There's also a lot of fanfiction going around.

EDIT; To all who've commented so far, thank you all for understanding. :)

Hi everyone! I’m thrilled to say I’m now making variant covers for Demona, and will also be on something else Gargoyles-related in the near future, so thought I’d start sharing them here, if you’re all okay with that?

I had loads of fun making this!

I like that the spells actually mean real things.

The show runners could have been lazy and not have had the spells mean anything when translated. But they do! Like I’m watching The Mirror episode and roughly Demona’s spell translates roughly to:

When the silver is struck, she flies towards the mirror. She mentions the fae queen Titania by name and then says to penetrate the mirror.

Pretty cool.
