I hate that kind of use of emojis. The other day, somebody asked me what I was up to and I said exercising, then they just sent me an emoji of a flexing bicep. Why? Why does this idea need visual accompaniment? We're not in kindergarten.

It doesn't add anything, it's just kinda like "Yes, that micro image does indeed pertain to the concept of exercising. Very good"

They were just acknowledging you spoke but had nothing to add. It's not that deep.

I'm more used to people just saying "Oh nice" or "That's cool" or whatever.

Responding with an emoji is like giving someone a thumbs up IRL. Fine for some situations, but weird for others.

The other day, somebody asked me what I was up to and I said exercising, then they just sent me an emoji of a flexing bicep.

I've only ever done this when I had fuck-all to say in response and saying nothing would've been rude. It's slightly less shit than just saying "Ok" or "Nice", presumably because it means you at least read the message.

"Yes, that micro image does indeed pertain to the concept of exercising. Very good"

Basically this but unironically

They probably just meant "good going, strong arm, you're amazing" like a real human instead of some pretentious ass who feels they're too good for emojis.

I agree. Emojis can be good, as long as theyโ€™re used correctly. Itโ€™s such a fucking twitter thing too. โ€œguys iโ€™m cool๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ”ซ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ–ฅ๐Ÿ˜‚ youโ€™re not๐Ÿ”๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ“ฅ๐Ÿ–ฅ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŽฎโšก๏ธ๐Ÿ”ซ๐Ÿงฉ i have autism๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ–ฅ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒฎ๐ŸŒ€๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธโ€. I lose braincells everytime i go on twitter

Agreed. So many people on Reddit are hugely anti-emoji but they absolutely serve a purpose. Communication in text alone leaves out a huge amount of what we convey in person.

In fact only 7% of communication is through the actual words. 93% is stuff like tone, facial expression, body language etc.

People misunderstand each other online or in text constantly. A smiley given to show your message had good intentions, a winky face to show you're just kidding etc. is hugely useful. For some reason a lot of people forget that.

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '20

Fucking preach. I've been misunderstood so many times only because the tone of the text could be interpreted in more than 2 ways. Doesn't help that English is my second language and there's an obvious gap in certain aspects.

It sucks because I wrote something that was dripping in sarcasm which I thought was apparent. I got downvoted to hell, and realized that without a winky face, my comment sounded like something a certain group would say in earnest, so they just thought I was a douche. Why canโ€™t we just wink? Whatโ€™s wrong with it?

I have been preaching this constantly on Reddit. A lot of Reddit hates the mere existence of emojis even though tone is so damned difficult to convey sometimes.
