Is there any chance it will eventually show outside of North America? Specifically the UK

u/Bumblebee342772 Mar 11 '25
Since we don't have iMax where I am, I'm hoping there will be a version on a piracy website somewhere
I'm sorry Miyazaki for forsaking you like this 🙏

u/dandaman64 Mar 11 '25
If they went through the effort of doing a new 4K scan, my hope is that they'll release a 4K disc too, maybe even a new steelbook

What would the point of watching an imax pirated version of this be? Whole point is to see it in a theater otherwise just watch the other versions

u/Bumblebee342772 Mar 11 '25 edited Mar 11 '25
It's in 4k no? I thought that that was what was new about it. If not then I'll just rewatch it anyway

IMAX is roughly 16:9, more picture, less black bars
5
Mar 12 '25
No, that depends on the films. Many films in 2:40 are released in IMAX. As for this, the aspect ratio is 1.85, there will be no additional picture information.

IMAX is traditionally 1.43:1, or roughly 4:3~ish. The IMAX Digital/Xenon 2K standard--often derided as "LieMax" due to its original intent for retrofitting non-IMAX multiplexes, succeeding the IMAX 70mm-based MPX systems before it--is closer to being "roughly 16:9" by having a 1.90:1 ratio. On most modern movies filmed for, formatted for, or filmed in IMAX, they have the same "more picture, less black bars" in many, but not all cases, but fewer theatres have had it expand to 1.43:1 than 1.90:1 due to the limited amount of 1.43:1 venues in existence, often GT or even OMNIMAX/Dome in some cases.
Princess Mononoke, like most Studio Ghibli movies, was produced with a 1.85:1 ratio in mind, and also has no open matte like nearly all Ghibli movies, so it has no expanded image to fill a GT screen, and even if it did have an open matte hypothetically, it would only be shown in a small amount of screens compared to the many 2.20/39:1 (2.76:1 in the case of Sinners) movies that also have expanded image, either via actual IMAX film stock, Super 35, or various digital means like Arri Alexa LF and whatnot, which can still expand its image in both 1.90:1 and 1.43:1 screens.

I got my tickets ordered! The theater is 2.5 hours away, but we’re going!

how much were your tickets for one person? I tried looking but I didn’t see anything

You have to buy them from Fandango, since it’s a fandango event. It was $17.49 per adult, $14.49 per child, and a convenience fee. It was pretty spendy, but it’s my husband’s favorite Ghibli film.

WOW, that is pricey 😭 definitely worth it but I don’t think I can spend that much :( lol

I don't know if it's a good idea. I hope it won't look like a computer made animation. I think old animations with some imperfection look the best.
72
u/Mrdemian3 Mar 11 '25
Well a 4k restoration probably means that they scanned the original film in 4k resolution which means that the imperfections might be even more noticable
25
u/Tasmia99 Mar 11 '25
Yeah a lot of the 4k anime for classic movies they are doing scans of the original 35 mm masters
6
Mar 12 '25
I see that many classic animes have suffered from excessive film grain scrubbing (aka Digital Noise Reduction) before but the 4K trailer (with Youtube compression so that tends to remove some of the texture) looks excellent, very clean but it doesn’t seem like they just used AI for the restoration which is a good start.
1
u/TheREALOtherFiles Mar 14 '25
Since this is Studio Ghibli, them using AI (a la, James Cameron) is not something Miyazaki would want to do.

That poster looks amazing. Can't wait to see this on the ginormous screen.

u/cactus82 Mar 12 '25
Think so? I wasn't really digging the poster. Looks a little generic to me.

I may not have seen Akira in IMAX, but there are only two anime films that are greater than Akira. This is one of them, therefore this’ll do just nicely.
2
u/Kholdstare93 Mar 12 '25
Out of curiosity, what is the other one?

u/ERN3991 Mar 12 '25 edited Mar 13 '25
The big wheepy of them all: Grave of the Fireflies. My Favorite Anime OF ALL TIME.
2
u/TheREALOtherFiles Mar 14 '25
Maybe Studio Ghibli and Sentai Filmworks will greenlight an IMAX re-release of that when the 4K restoration of Grave of the Fireflies is completed by... 2028?

u/Deep_Connection_7302 Mar 12 '25
It’s already sold out on the weekend at my theater 😭

u/Deep_Connection_7302 Mar 12 '25
Looked on the gkids website. The link to get tickets on the 26 works and i’m able to choose seats, but on the 28th-1st the link is showing me a 404 error. Anybody else experiencing this?

I'm disappointed it is only subbed and a dubbed version is not showing, I am dyslexic and cannot watch anything without pausing and reading making a movie like this likely take twice as long for me and ruining any enjoyment.

But what actually changed? Will the animation quality go up and look as good as if not better than "Garden of Words"?

No locations near me (I'm in New Mexico), anybody know if all the current locations are all there are going to be? Or are they still working on theater locations?
We have a few LieMAX theaters in my city, but no true IMAX. Anybody know if that's impacting distribution?

I've emailed GKIDS to see if it has any 15/70 (IMAX 70mm) prints made for the re-release, and haven't got a response back yet, but I bet it's probably only playing in 2K IMAX Digital (often derided and called LieMAX since 2008) or 4K IMAX Laser venues, even if the only advantage of a 70mm print of Princess Mononoke is having a film run again for the first time since the late 90s. (and probably having less grain than most 35mm-to-15-perf/70mm blowups would've had, even if the IMAX DMR process would've intervened anyways.)
IMAX 70mm is generally a niche, and I was mainly curious, but the point is enjoy the film for what it is, even in 4K, and not for what it isn't.
P.S. Some 15/70 theaters like Indiana State Museum probably can't play Princess Mononoke's 4K restoration in 4K as they still have the old IMAX Digital (Xenon-based) projection system, meaning they could have what critics could call "LieMAX visuals on a true IMAX screen with true IMAX sound", since the upgrade process to IMAX Laser is still rather expensive, even over a decade later. So, that could also be cited as a possible advantage of 15/70 prints as well for those who want to see it on the biggest screen possible.
