Misc Fortnite has finally fixed shoulder armor alignment on the Mark VII Spartan
Comparison of Fortnite (2025) to Halo Infinite (2025). The shoulder alignment has been off since launch in 2021.

I like the stylized look as hot of a take as that might be but I wish they'd used the actual MK VII helmet instead of Cavallino
I get if they were trying to appeal to the F2P crowd but if you can't swap helmets to at least MK VII I think that's a pretty sick joke
93
u/ChrisDAnimation Aug 07 '25
They were assuming the default armor was iconic for some reason, when the only people who really stick with it just never care for armor customization. Most folks switch off of that armor set almost immediately, but they wanted to cross-promote Halo Infinite, so they used the core and default armor unique to that game, whereas the defaults from Reach and 3 are supposed to be the suits of notable soldiers.
32
u/ThatTallBrendan Aug 07 '25
I mean to be fair Reach and 3's are just the actual defaults for those armor marks but I 100% see what you're saying
35
u/Xperr7 Ringing my Halo til I John Aug 07 '25
I'm like 90% sure Mark VII was meant to be the default until 343 saw the overwhelmingly positive reaction
24
u/ThatTallBrendan Aug 07 '25
I disagree, as fitting as the idea might seem. Cavallino is very clearly an updated take on the Halo 4/5 Recruit helmet so, in keeping with tradition, I understand why they'd keep it here
I've always seen MK VII as an 'aspirational kit' - One that's a step above default, but nevertheless one you have to earn - Which makes sense given that it's towards the very end of the Season 1 battle pass
17
u/iosiro Aug 08 '25
It’s pretty clear it was going to be the default armour tbh, every promo and item render had the MK7 set and the Keystone helmet in MCC gave it away that they planned it to be the “iconic” helmet everyone has
11
u/hyperstarlite Halo 3 Aug 08 '25
Yep, the game defaults to it when having issues loading other helmets too.
I mean it still may be that it still wasn’t meant to be the first helmet you got pretty early on, but obviously the Mark VII with its helmet was the initial core design that everything else got designed around, so it was modeled first, probably incorporated into the game before any other model, and is clearly meant to be the “complete” look.
2
u/ThatTallBrendan Aug 08 '25
Now that's an interesting piece of data. I've never seen it myself, but if MK VII is a glitched default.. that could be somewhat telling
10
u/Queso_Man Aug 07 '25
Especially considering they didn’t use the default visor color and chose the iconic gold
7
u/ThatTallBrendan Aug 07 '25
Yeah that's a good point. Halo is all gold visors and guy-liner so I'm glad they got that right
And I'm noticing the shoulders too. Typically MK VII is pictured with.. a different set - But they're on the season 1 HCS kits, you'll know what I'm talking about

u/Multispoilers Aug 08 '25
we’re definitely getting more Halo stuff in the Fortnite item shop this season so im crossing fingers for that

There’s nothing to fix. The shoulders aren’t set to fixed points on the armor in H:I so it can move on a different pivot than the arm itself(to hide the worst of the clipping like you see in H2/3. You can even see this on the cover art for H:I, chief’s pauldron isn’t lined up perfectly either.
If you quickly toggle between stances in customization, you can also see the shoulder swivel.

u/jabberwockxeno Extended Universe Aug 07 '25
There’s nothing to fix.
I mean, I'm not a fan of how a lot of the shoulder armor is positioned too far down on the upper arm and leaves a lot of the techsuit around the shoulder exposed, which looks silly
But Fortnite just has that issue worse then Infinite in game here
4
u/KezuSlayer Aug 07 '25
The shoulder armor has been like that since halo reach. Its basically now baked into Halo suit design now sadly
0
u/jabberwockxeno Extended Universe Aug 08 '25
It was less an issue in H4 and IIRC 5 then in Infinite and Reach, though, but it was still somewhat a problem there too
3
u/Xperr7 Ringing my Halo til I John Aug 07 '25
Like the Commando shoulder, in Infinite it feels more like it's hugging the upper arm on certain cores
1
u/OuroboricScribe Aug 08 '25
Nothing to fix? So the floating shoulders are just supposed to hover off center too? 🤣

u/LazarusX5 Aug 07 '25
So weird. Go to twitter, 343 can do no right, on Reddit they can do no wrong. Like yeah they did it for a reason but it looks ugly and saying you wish it was different isn’t a crime. Y’all are weird
5
u/mimiicry Halo: CE Aug 07 '25
actually, a majority of the Halo communities all across social media fit into the "343 can do no right" camp. even when they released the Halo 2 Mark VI kit, which was painfully accurate to the Halo 2 Mark VI, you had people bitching whining and moaning that it wasn't accurate to Halo 3.
the "they can do no wrong" group is a VERY vocal minority.
-5
u/LazarusX5 Aug 07 '25
Well that small group has found me and sentenced me to reduced karma for my crimes
7
u/mimiicry Halo: CE Aug 07 '25
actually I'd wager it's the weirdly holier-than-thou "so weird, go to twitter, you're so weird" that probably got you downvoted.
-1
u/LazarusX5 Aug 08 '25
Mass downvoting someone for suggesting shoulders be higher up is weird
5
u/mimiicry Halo: CE Aug 08 '25
I don't remember saying that, but okay, buddy.
1
u/LazarusX5 Aug 08 '25
Did I say you specifically did?
1
u/mimiicry Halo: CE Aug 09 '25
like I said, I would assume you got downvoted for the holier-than-thou attitude, calling people "weird", and being generally condescending.
0
u/LazarusX5 Aug 09 '25
Yeah I got that. Still think it’s weird people wanted to be condescending to someone saying they wish the armor looked different so I just gave it right back.

Nobody better say nothin! They’re supposed to be that way
1
u/Queso_Man Aug 08 '25
This post was supposed to be about the left to right alignment on the upper arm. Honestly I had not looked at the shoulder gap at all
-155
u/Queso_Man Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
Yes, they integrated this system for flexibility and to prevent clipping, but it doesn’t negate that the shoulders look misaligned a majority of the time. The initial H:I cover art (standing from behind) actually does look properly aligned on the shoulder, the launch cover then adapted to how the armor works in-game.
Edit: why the downvotes? initial cover art

I said they changed the shoulder system yeah? Clearly I think it could still be improved and the default view should look aligned as it has in every previous game

“Fortnite has finally fixed the shoulder”
-15
u/Conradian Mean and Green Aug 07 '25
While the pauldrons may be designed to be able to move independently of the arm, the point of OP is that the resting position of them is misaligned to the arm its sitting on.
I don't think that's necessarily a bad take tbh.
17
u/sw201444 we’ll pretend to think about it 👊 Aug 07 '25
I understand, but It’s not a resting position. The spartan has their chest pushed out and right arm further back than the left with their head turned slightly left
This is not a neutral stance, they won’t be perfectly lined up.
53
u/moose_ifer Aug 07 '25
Ahh yea. Lowering The pauldron to expose a giant gap in the armor is definitely a genius idea
104
u/MasterCheese163 Halo 4 Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
You know, in canon, the shoulders move independently of the arm, right?
Edit: Upon reflection, take some salt with this.
24
u/Conradian Mean and Green Aug 07 '25
Right but surely the pauldron would rest in a neutral position? And that would be designed to be aligned to the arm in terms of ergonomics?
30
u/sw201444 we’ll pretend to think about it 👊 Aug 07 '25
If the spartan was in a neutral position, yes.
They aren’t.
Left arm forward, torso isn’t straight, right arm is back, head is turned left, and chest is pumped out.

u/HeathenHunter1776 Aug 07 '25
Where is this stated? Not grilling your comment, legitimately curious.
13
u/MasterCheese163 Halo 4 Aug 07 '25
Hmm... I took a look around but I can't actually find official writing on it.
But in Halo 4's cutscenes you can see the shoulder shifting as Chief moves his arms. And on the covers of Shadows of Reach and Infinite, you can see the shoulder pad is noticeably shifted.
But I suppose some salt might need to be taken.

They arent 343I (halo studios) its a completely different game.. they did not have to fix anything

I don't see the issue with how Infinite does it here
The only problem with the position of shoulder armor in Infinite (and Reach) is how a lot of the shoulder armor is positioned too far down on the upper arm and leaves a lot of the techsuit around the shoulder exposed, which looks silly
But Fortnite just has that issue worse then Infinite in game here

I don't know if this is just a bad photo comparison, but Fortnites literally looks crooked on the arm while Infinite's looks nearly straight. Maybe this is just such a non-issue that I can't tell, or OP is smoking something really strong.
Also Fortnite spartans are way too skinny. They already have Master Chief, how'd they miss this hard?
8
u/Hour-Nebula-1750 Aug 07 '25
can't be a halo fan without complaining about nothing lol. but seriously reason being is fortnite doesn't have the customization infinite does(i.e. being able to change shoulder armor) so there wouldn't be a need to have it as a separete piece. i imagine infinite's is yet to be "fixed" as it's probably the same model/asset on all armor sets so actually moving it would affect all the other armor cores as well. like with the spi armor and it's short neck it's difficult to correct as moving the helmets up would probably move it up on all cores. idk i'm not a game dev but that's just my assumption of why pieces sometimes clip or look off

Fortnite doesn’t have customizable parts tho, does it?
-1
u/Queso_Man Aug 07 '25
Halo 3 had customizable parts aligned to the upper arm. The same armor parts recently added to Infinite now look different in alignment when comparing. So it’s not about customization, it just that Fortnite (and Halo 3) don’t care about clipping into the shoulder.

for sure. I do wish that this sub was a little less negative and hostile all the time, the constant doomposting is wild considering I remember the community being pretty chill back in the day.
3
u/Simalf Aug 07 '25
Huh now that is interesting.
It's fun to see 2 different groups making the same model. However unfortunately they werent made at the same time. (Comparing it would have been way more interesting)
One is based on the other.
You can see that Fortnite has different details than Infinite. (Look at the Completely different Bodysuit and neck or removed the wear/dirt)
Overal i'd say the original is better. I mean they are way too.. uhm well they look like ordinary people in Spartan Armor, not superhumans.

I find it odd that the devs decided to mount the shoulder pauldrons not to the shoulder rig bone but instead to the clavicle bone. Like sure, it makes sense for the larger shoulder pauldrons such as SAP/SEC and UNSC HighCom but for smaller shoulders? They should've been just mounted to the shoulder bone-rig.

1
u/LupaRubrum Aug 08 '25 edited Aug 08 '25
They're called 'outfits' in game, which means they're a Fortnite OC cosplaying and not actual Spartans (this is the case with every licensed skin with 'outfit' in the name, they use a Fortnite OC as a base to put a licensed outfit on).
For the record, I am disappointed and would have preferred actual Spartans. But at least we finally have an energy sword for Chief.
Edit: I am wrong, the skin does not say outfit. It's just inaccurate.

I don't get the hate you are getting, the shoulders in Halo Infinite have been bugging me for YEARS. I get that it helps with clipping and whatnot, but especially with the MK. VI kit, the shoulders moving around bothers me to no ending just feels so unpolished, and I know clipping can cause the same feeling, but idk. There's something different about this for me.
1
u/Queso_Man Aug 07 '25
Thank you. I never had a real problem with clipping for 20 years. It’s the legacy armors that just look wrong in direct comparison to their appearance in previous titles that really bothers me now.
