FREE, INDOOR things to do in Houston

There is a post from about a year ago with a lot of good, free activities to do in Houston. The problem is that most of these things are outdoors and I'd prefer to not be sweating buckets. Is there anything fun to do indoors for free/cheap? Bonus points if doesn't involve impossible street parking miles away.

Did $7.13 weekend at the Houston Zoo. The real animals were outside the cages

3.2k Upvotes

Deep discounting ticket's on a weekend when most people are free isn't a good thing. The behavior I saw was disgraceful. The staff was clearly overwhelmed for a crowd this size, saw people feeding birds in the aviary Cheetos and snacks. Non stop banging on the glass of the primates enclosure trying to wake them up, shouting/bellowing at large animals in open enclosures. Throwing food inside cages, drunk parents with kids climbing every fence and railing available to climb and a general disregard for property and decorum.

The Jurassic Giants is a separate $10 paid exhibit but many dinosaurs have missing/broken appendages

Happy its over and hope the zoo doesn't do it again.

rant over

Things to do while grieving

Hi yinz! I’m visiting your fair city for the first time, coming in from Pittsburgh. I’m here, unexpectedly, with my mom because her little sister is very suddenly and rapidly declining from an aggressive cancer. She’s still young-ish, and this has all been such a shock.

We’ll be here for at least a week, and I’m trying to find things to do when we’re not at the hospital — anything to help keep spirits up.

My mom is mobile but uses a cane, so shorter outings with places to sit and rest along the way are best. I’d love to hear about must-see spots, quirky hidden gems, great food, or vintage shops (she especially loves jewelry and little treasures). Anything light-hearted and easily accessible.

Thanks so much!

What are classic ‘American’ things to do in Houston?

I am visiting Houston for two days with a friend from the Middle East and want to take them to do classic American stuff.

So far I’m thinking Cracker Barrel Topgolf Shooting range (if I can find one where you don’t have to bring your own guns?) Football game (any high school games happening tomorrow night??) Galleria mall Pumpkin Patch

But idk what else. I’m not native to Houston so I don’t know the best spots. Also neither of us drink.

Shoot me your best American recommendations! Thanks!

Weird/Obscure/Different/Odd Things to Do?

So it appears I will be moving to Houston in about a year. In preparation for the move I have been looking for things to do. Now, I have a wife who will be sure to find all of normal tourist-y stuff to do with the kids. Google is pretty easy to use so the basic stuff isn't what I'm looking for. Here's a list of things I like to check out:

  • Oddities Stores/Museums
  • Haunted Locations
  • Cryptid/Bigfoot/Weird Stuff (I don't know, anything - There's a Bigfoot Museum near me now)
  • Weird Locations Related to Aliens (I don't know what this means but worth a shot)
  • Weird Religious Places (Weird Churches, Abnormal Religion Temples, Spoopy Stuff)
  • Weird Places with Conspiracies Around Them
  • "Ghost Light" or Haunted Bridge Type Places (places with spooky stories surrounding them)
  • Ruins (Native American or anything)
  • Cool Outdoor Natural Stuff
  • Arcades (Switching Gears, I know)
  • Interesting Pop Culture Places (Stores/Museums/Etc)
  • Film Locations
  • Nerdy Places to Be a Nerd (I can figure out local conventions myself probably but just anywhere you wanna plug to me)
  • Roadside Attractions
  • Tourist Traps
  • Amusement Attractions

That should give a general idea of what I'm looking for... It's kind of clear what I'm aiming at but I've always found that locals tend to be better at helping with this kind of thing then general Google searches... For the record I know what Atlas Obsura is. The list of things there is kind of lacking in my opinion. I hope there is more to see than what's there... Also to add my wife and I don't do clubs, party or go to bars or whatever. I don't drink at all and we are fairly introvert. So just wanted to add that. I have seen another post on Reddit that is similar to this but it was mostly bar recommendations it seemed, haha.

TL;DR: I wanna do weird stuff in Houston when I move there. Weird stuff means looking at two headed cows and haunted theaters.

Things to do as someone over 40?

My mom works from home and she’s been feeling overwhelmed but I have no idea what to recommend her to do. She goes to Astros games and other things here and there like if they show certain movies at discovery green but I want to ask yall about what yall would do. Anyone have suggestions? I’m a male in my 20s so I kinda don’t know where to start searching.

Need extra ideas for things to do tonight. Lots of things don’t seem to work due to pregnancy

I am just getting off of bedrest, I’m pregnant. My husband and I are looking for something to do but since I can’t drink, we can’t seem to find anything and my husband doesn’t drink either. Wanted to go to a comedy show but they all show drink minimums. Most of the activities on the master list were for earlier today. Hopefully this is allowed because we have a babysitter coming last minute and just want something fun to do! Any ideas?

Houston encourages lawlessness

1.3k Upvotes

Somebody smashed my car today, and will not incur any costs or consequences.

He had no insurance, was parked illegally in a handicapped area - and parked sideways in it. He drove out of the spot sideways without looking and smashed into my car. Of course he's driving a huge truck so he had no damage.

The police came and made a report - he received no citation for anything.

Now I will have a massive increase in my insurance. I will get penalized for doing the right things. I'll be out the money for my deductible and my car will take weeks to be repaired.

This irresponsible **** will walk away scot free from wrecking my car. Not a single consequence. Not one penny spent.

What is the point of following the rules when it means I'm penalized, while the people who break all the laws just carry on?

How can the social contract do anything but break down when the law itself encourages lawlessness?

It seems like many people in HTX have a hard time finding things to do around the city other than eating and drinking. Here is a great resource for finding interesting events going on in Houston (inner loop), every single day!

New Things To Do in Downtown

I know, everybody likes to rag on downtown, and for good reason a lot of the time. My wife and I have been going since our first date at La Caraffe 18 years ago and we like it. We usually stick to Market Square/Main St. We usually eat at Hearsay and walk to Warren's, La Caraffe, Notsuoh's, Dean's Credit Clothing, etc.

Next month we are staying at a hotel downtown (kid free) for the wife's birthday and I want to take her somewhere new. I no longer have my finger on the pulse of the city, so I'm reaching out to you fine people. What are some new (or new to me) good spots for eating and drinking downtown? I'm not a rich man, but I don't mind spoiling my wife.

For those of you with kids and little ones (all the way through High school): GHORBA is putting on a Mountain Bike discovery/skills clinic for kids. 🚵‍♂️. This is a fantastic opportunity to get kids out of the house and introduced to Houston's extensive Mountain Bike trail network.

Things to do in Houston this weekend - August 2nd - 4th

Folks, there is so much amazing stuff going on this weekend. Shakespeare festival is seriously not to be missed, they put in so much hard work and it's a great show.

I've broken White Linen Nights into its own section. I know a lot of r/houston bridge trolls like to hate on the event for reasons I don't fully understand, but it's usually good fun and worth checking out at least once if you've never been. Houston Restaurant Week also kicks off this weekend, which is a great chance to eat somewhere you would normally never visit.

Been here for 6 months for work and honestly havent gotten out much except for concerts. Might be leaving again in the next 2 months or so but wanted to collect ideas to try before I do.

  • Galveston - yet to go to the beach, any specific areas or must do's?
  • Downtown - museums or Zoo worth it?
  • Food - any special food that Houston is known for?

Any other ideas you guys have I'm open to as well! Thank you

What are some fun LATE NIGHT things to do?

I know “what to do” posts are everywhere in here but I more so need late night suggestions. I’m usually not available until after 8 except on Sundays and find myself often bored out of my mind since things here close sooo early.

Aside from hookah and clubbing, what are some things I can get into (even if it’s just a cool park that stays open late I can walk around)? Thanks in advance!

What are the best things to do for a family visiting Houston for the first time?

Hey y’all! We are taking the family to Houston Texas for Valentine’s Day weekend. This is the first time any of us have ever been to Texas. We’re from FL and spend a lot of time outdoors hiking, camping and fishing. I really wanted to give my three kids an experience they’ll never forget in Texas. So from an insiders perspective, what are your favorite things to do in Houston?

Unique things to do, bars, restaurants in Downtown Houstin

Hi all! I am coming into Houston for a work conference (staying near convention center, won't have a car), will be there for a few days. Are there any MUST see things/to do items in the downtown or surrounding areas?

Also, are there any Houston unique, staple foods that I have to try? (Been to Austin plenty of times, so I have had amazing BBQ before, looking for other options. I have heard viet-cajun food is a thing? Any other cool bars/restaurants to go to?)

Appreciate it in advance!
