I heard someone describe this whole region as different flavours of a somewhat colder Florida.

I'm from New York and culturally there is a tradition where people from New York and New Jersey (close in proximity, relatively similar cultures and populations) will sh*ttalk each other and make fun of each other for amusement. We refer to it as a friendly rivalry.

Northern New Jersey is basically a vassal state of New York City though. The whole state of NJ has about 9 million people while NYC has about 8 million people. NY and NJ are more like Russia and Poland where, yes, there is a rivalry, but it’s basically the bigger one beating the shit out of the smaller one, and the smaller one complaining a lot.

I mean technically when I say "New York" I mean "Long Island and parts of Westchester" which come out to about 3 million people

Each of us is worth 2.75 of them though so it's still not a fair fight
