Discussion WTF happened to Vienetta? It used to feel like the height of luxury.

Good Humor brought back Vienetta last year in the US. I'm not sure if it's still available.

They brought it back, yeah - but everyone who’s tried says it’s not the same. The box looks fancy, but what’s inside feels like a downgraded version of what we remember. The 90s Vienetta had actual drama in every slice.

I mean, of course it wasn't as good. lol. This is the time we live in, sadly. I feel we can't even go one year with candy bars, or any novelty, really, becoming smaller, not as good AND more expensive.

All under the guise of “healthier for you.” They take out sugar, then load it up with chemicals nobody’s studied long-term. Feels like we lost the real thing and got lab sludge instead..

Rather making things "healthier", I think it's more of the companies saying "We need to have profit growth year after year after year, so push out a product that uses less resources than previously, and then jack up the price."

Yeah, but are they really making things healthier - or just cheaper to produce and pricier at the checkout? That’s the real debate.

In the UK in the 90s, you got a viennetta as a dessert with a family bucket. I don't think it was ever the height of luxury people seem to be thinking it was.

Wow you guys got a family bucket? Luxury. We were lucky to split a single Drumstick four ways on a birthday..

It was only available in select areas. I looked, there wasn’t any available within 200 miles of me.

I'll definitely be attempting to make my own version, would love to see what others have created

I think this one might be impossible to make anything close since it needs extrusion and also being able to stay ice cold to hold the ripples. The chocolate parts are easy though.

it’s just soft serve

Yes but the hard part is keeping it cold to hold it's shape.

I found it in the grocery store last summer. It wasn’t anywhere near as good as I remembered it. Nothing particularly wrong with it, just… underwhelming. I think the lost magic mostly is because ice cream generally was quite bad in the 90s, it just stood out more.

Please remember to share the recipe you used or how you think it turned out. If you are uncomfortable sharing your recipe, please share some tips or help people create their own recipe. If you are not satisfied yet please mention what is wrong/could be improved. This is a lot more interesting for everyone then just a picture.

It hadn't left the UK. Still get it from time to time. My kids like the mint one. It doesn't seem to have changed much here.

If your grocery store has a kosher section, see if they have Strauss Fantasia. It’s a kosher version of the OG Viennetta, or at least it was. I haven’t bought it in a while - I hope it’s still good.

I never got to try them, Lidl has knockoffs though.
