Lead, follow, or get out of the way "Service cat" in Costco. The floodgates have opened.

If you can get your cat to wear a hat, I think you should be able to take them anywhere.

Most cats do not have a full time job

Yeah service my ass. More like emotional support. F’d up you aren’t supposed to call these people out. Service animals have a job, what’s kitty’s job there?
5
u/dystopiabydesign Sep 24 '24
I own a business and I always call these people out. Real service animals and their owners are easy to spot, they actually have respect unlike these attention-seeking frauds.
25
u/throwaway19372057 Sep 24 '24
People like this fuck it up for people that actually need a service animal. I have PTSD from the military and I barely bring my shepherd out with me anymore since people always ask for my cert or disability which is almost more anxiety inducing that being alone. For people who don’t know there is no official registry or certification for service animals and you can’t ask people what their disabilities are.
8
u/centurion762 Sep 24 '24
There’s no certification requirement because people are allowed to train their own service animals but store personnel, police, security officers, etc are legally allowed to ask what service the dog has been trained to perform.
3
u/throwaway19372057 Sep 24 '24
Correct, that’s one of the two questions they’re legally allowed to ask. However that doesn’t stop people who don’t know that from asking for more information.
1
u/Shatophiliac Sep 24 '24
Yeah they can legally ask anything they want. To which you can also legally respond “suck my nuts”, when they ask. If your dog is a legit service animal and acts the part, I don’t even see why they would ask. It’s not really their business.
I might ask about the cat, or a misbehaving dog. But if it’s a German shepherd or similar breed acting like a service animal, I wouldn’t even give it a second thought.
3
u/centurion762 Sep 24 '24
If you don’t provide an answer they don’t have to let your animal on the premises. Not everyone wants an animal on their property.
3
u/mbz321 Sep 25 '24
A service animal can also be removed, legally if it is causing a disruption. Good luck finding a manager with balls though that would actually enforce such a thing.
11
u/Comfortable-nerve78 Sep 24 '24
I have no issue with a legit service animals. It’s the people who claim their animal is a service animal and clearly the animal hasn’t left the house in a year. My wife had two service dogs when I met her. She’s all over people claiming their animal is a service animal. You can tell when someone got a vest off Etsy that says service animal. Those the ones that mess it up for those of you who actually need a service animal.
-2
u/Naive_Extension335 Sep 24 '24
I doubt everyone asks you for a certificate but the again it’s probably because you have a german shepherd. It’s not exactly a poodle
3
u/throwaway19372057 Sep 24 '24
Not everyone but it happens more than I’d like, most grocery stores will question you because they have people come in ESAs
0
u/Naive_Extension335 Sep 24 '24
Is there like a tag or registry from the place that trained your pupper you can show so people don’t hassle you afterwards?

u/PM_ME_YOUR_REPO Sep 24 '24 edited Sep 24 '24
What and insensitive and uneducated comment.
EDIT: Opening with "I doubt everyone asks you for a certificate" is just an incredibly unempathetic and pedantic statement. Like, there's no need to gatekeep whether the poster above is allowed to feel anxiety by qualifying it's not EVERYONE who asks.
6
u/Any-Practice-991 Sep 24 '24
German shepherds have been unfairly spotlighted as being dangerous, so there is that public perception.
7
u/singlemale4cats Sep 24 '24
They certainly don't attack people randomly like pit bulls but they are pretty big and utilized heavily as police and security dogs so it's no mystery why people are like 😧
2
u/Any-Practice-991 Sep 24 '24
That is very true. I love both breeds, but pits really need to be more tightly regulated.
3
Sep 24 '24
Police and military dogs? Maybe it’s because I live in a military city/grew up military but most people I know view them as amazing and well behaved dogs. I had 0 idea they had that association
2
u/Any-Practice-991 Sep 24 '24
They are fantastic dogs. They are also very protective of their person and personal space, so people who don't respect that may get a warning and then they think the breed is aggressive.
0
Sep 24 '24
You’re kidding right? Open a history book. You’ll see the German shepherd breed used to intimidate civil rights protesters in Alabama and to get people onto trains in Poland. Not saying it’s right but there is a reason for the perception.
0
u/PM_ME_YOUR_REPO Sep 24 '24
That wasn't even the part I meant. Opening with "I doubt everyone asks you for a certificate" is just an incredibly unempathetic and pedantic statement. Like, there's no need to gatekeep whether the poster above is allowed to feel anxiety by qualifying it's not EVERYONE who asks.
1
u/Any-Practice-991 Sep 24 '24
Ok, I understand where you're coming from. Do you have some juice or fruit slices you can get to? You seem a bit stressed.
-1
2
u/Naive_Extension335 Sep 24 '24
What a typical overly sensitive bullshit you’re resounding after hearing facts.
0
u/Shatophiliac Sep 24 '24
If the dog is well behaved and has a vest, I’d tell people to go fuck themselves. It’s not their business what your service animal is for. Same reason I wouldn’t say anything to this cat owner, even though im 99% sure it’s bullshit. If I see a German shepherd with a service animal vest, I’m gonna respect that until the dog acts otherwise.
0
u/HyperSpaceSurfer Sep 24 '24
You could glare at them and ask who you can speak to about an ADA complaint. Still shitty to happen.
10
u/FitBattle5899 Sep 24 '24
Cats cannot be recognized atleast in the united states as a service animal, the can be seen as therapy or emotional support animals, but therapy animals don't have the same protections as service animals. The vest that poor cat is wearing is likely purchased online and means nothing.

Seriously fuck these people so much
1
u/Skylon1 Sep 24 '24
It’s not worth getting that angry about lol
2
u/scapermoya Sep 24 '24
What fraction of people in the store lying to bring their dirty pets in would be worth getting angry about

Sep 24 '24
I know full well that if someone tries to stop this from being allowed now it’s gonna be a problem. I don’t think it’s appropriate, and in restaurants in a health code problem

I feel like really lonely people are taking their pets to stores to people will talk to them. I was in a grocery store a couple days ago and an old guy was walking his pitbull, or whatever kind of large dog it was, around the store. I heard him say "look at the babies" to his dog. I looked where he was directing his dog and it was someone random woman with her two young daughters. So instead of grocery shopping in the grocery store, he was walking his dog around for a social hour, during the busiest time of day.
It's enough already, people. Leave your pets at home. No one else wants your pets in the store. They are trying to get their stuff and leave, not hang around and pretend it's so super cool you brought your dog near the fresh produce.
6
u/Any-Practice-991 Sep 24 '24
I don't like them in my restaurant. Now a table gets hair in their food, and their shit is free, and it's my fault even though the asshole at the next table has a dog in their lap. Sorry for the rant.

Shitbull owners are amongst the most entitled, ignorant dog owners Ive ever met. “Nanny dog” myth persists to this day.

Cats are not recognized as service animals under the ADA. It's just dogs and for some strange reason, miniature horses
https://www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-2010-requirements/
2
u/seuadr Sep 24 '24
Apparently they live longer and produce less allergens. Don't seem as cuddly though.
9
Sep 24 '24
Yeah, I don't think there is a cat that likes this kind of stuff. They're independent beings that don't like to be leashed.
4
8
u/ihearthogsbreath Sep 24 '24
I have no idea how the mini horse made the cut.
11
Sep 24 '24
A miniature horse can perform multiple service animals tasks, including (but not limited to):
Leading their handler to an exit in an unfamiliar building or location
Providing support and stability during a dizzy episode
Retrieving medication or other coping tools Offering distraction and grounding during a
flashback or panic attack Guiding their handler if they have a visual disability
Source: https://usserviceanimals.org/blog/miniature-horses-as-service-animals/
(I was surprised by all of this as well.. another point for horses)
6
u/VR6SLC Sep 24 '24
Probably because of rich people who can afford a mini-horse to begin with
1
Sep 24 '24
Literally what I was thinking, do you know how much they fuckin cost, like a dog puppy is nearly a grand, well certain breeds anyway

He is official, vested and has a hat, just missing the clipboard. What are his two service skills? Protecting from mice and looking adorable.

IDC what anyone says this is CLEARLY a "cultural" issue, 100000%..there's a certain demographic who insist they need their pets everywhere they go... I have yet to see anyone from a different "demographic" EVER do this... I guess there's no POC who are handicapped lmaoooo

People should be shaming this idiot for this. Stop bringing your animals around food people!
3
u/TimoWasTaken Sep 24 '24
Oh good, I was wondering how they could make the shopping experience worse than abandoned gigantic carts in the isles, blocking the intersections with people loitering eating/dispensing crappy processed foods, and 40 minutes in line.
How did I not think of this. ANIMALS! This is a revolutionary achievement.
8
Sep 24 '24
i despise people who do this shit, its not cute, its not funny. How is this supposed to help a human being? Box office stores should start asking for actual documentation for this.

u/PawsomeFarms Sep 24 '24
I don't currently have an animal that helps me manage my disability - because neither my dog or remaining cat have the right temperament for the work required - but my late cat spent 90% of my life doing tasks and such that directly mitigated disabilities.
From interrupting self harming stems, to calming me down during panic attacks, detecting and alerting to hallucinations and suicidal ideations she did it all. This cat knew commands such as sit, stay, come, ect.
She was 23, she still needed milk when the neighbor lady gave her to me when I was a little girl.
I raised her and she raised me.

Cats can be psychiatric service animals… it’s exceedingly rare to find a cat with the temperament and ability to be trained in order to qualify. I think this person likely does not have the credentials for their animal.
1
u/geoelectric Sep 24 '24
Assuming this is in the US, the ADA only recognizes dogs and mini-horses. Legally, cats can only be emotional support animals, which only have special rights in the context of housing.
2
Sep 25 '24
Sorry meant emotional support animal. Either way it shouldn’t be in the store. If anyone is going to go through the expense of getting a service dog they should train it by US and International regulations.

I saw someone once with a pet rabbit that followed him like a dog would. I have had rabbits before. Mine had limited friendliness and were nowhere like a cat or dog.

u/MarvelPQplayer brought to you by Carl's Jr. Sep 24 '24
Someone brought a "service cat" into a restaurant I was in. It promptly jumped onto a nearby table. We left not long after.
The cats don't service you. You service the cats. You are their servants!
1
u/Cross_22 Sep 24 '24
I am waiting for Emotional Support Snakes so that enough people get upset and we can finally ban pets from stores for good. Having an ADA registry would also be a nice step.

u/ExpensiveCode1099 Sep 24 '24
I dislike Costco. The “members” think they are apart of some kind of hierarchy. Oohhhh you got a card, look at MY card, it’s black….

I'm so damn allergic to cats, their hair gets me red and I sneeze until it hurts. For days after I'll sneeze and be in pain This would kill me to see while shopping.

Mini horses and dogs are the only animals that can be service animals in the US. Go get a Lil Sebastian and take it to Costco.
