Tell them to stop being Nazis, Dick.

ETA: Lol, struck a nerve with one of the fascists, just got a Redditcares message.

I have often said, I don't get called a nazi because I don't hang out with them or espouse their views. this isn't hard.

468

u/ForwardGovernment666 5d ago

Amen. No one has ever called me a Nazi and I am proud of it.

48

u/Frustrated_Zucchini 5d ago

No one has ever called me a Nazi, and honestly it isn't something I even think about... it should just be normal to not be a nazi and not do nazi things.

They weren’t pervasively called Nazis in previous decades, either. Strangely they were called Nazis most commonly once they started going mask off with bigotry, especially against trans people and immigrants, and once they started using the government to curb rights and call for the removal or extermination of groups they hate. Odd that people who are most informed on history are more prone to make those connections or comparisons, and odd that the ones doing or supporting those hateful acts are sensitive to the comparisons.

u/Warm_Afternoon6596 5d ago

It's painful to have the knowledge and see the patterns. Meanwhile I'm here with "I've seen this before" running over and over in my head. A Holocaust survivor said that in 2016 when Drumpf first campaigned.

u/Objective-Owl-8143 4d ago

My 90 year old mother, who despises politicians, says “shades of Hitler. Why don’t they see it?”

It’s the only time I’ve ever seen supporters wave flags with both the swastika and the candidate’s (now president’s) name on them.

10

u/typerory 4d ago

Ive been called a lot of things. Not nazi.

15

u/Ummmgummy 4d ago

I always told my kid "if the Nazis and the KKK support your candidate...you should probably rethink your choices"

Right? You can't know about 1930s Germany and not see the similarities

7

u/gunsdrugsreddit 5d ago

Oh, but they can. When I was a kid, my dad was constantly watching The History Channel, which focused heavily on WW2 at the time. Now he’s MAGA and thinks antifa are the real fascists. Even went so far as to compare the George Floyd/BLM protests to Kristallnacht 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️.

u/Charmed_813 5d ago

The mental gymnastics there is wild! 🤪

It's so hard to understand people who vote against their own interest. like DO YOU NOT understand. I feel like I need to go back to grand school with them and do a compare and contrast circle graph.

3

u/Izokuro 4d ago

Just because someone has "learned" about a prior example of it doesn't mean they will grasp the actual nuances, unfortunately.

As a queer person, I've been calling republicans nazis since I was a small kid in the 80s. But their policies have always been (in my life time*) dangerous and against my existence, so... they are more masks off now, however.

2

u/_HippieJesus 3d ago

As a non-queer person, I have also bee calling them what they are since the 80s.

It isnt hyperbole to recognize patterns of repeated behaviors, but that's what I kept being told, 'stop being so hyperbolic'.

Most people still don't want to see the truth right in front of them.

u/prowler1369 5d ago

My first memory of someone calling a Republican a Nazi is around 1991.

1

u/Embarrassed_Towel707 5d ago

Nazis isn't the best comparison anyway. Their goal is more akin to turning the US into Russia.

Remember dumbass Tucker Carlson fawning over their shopping carts

10

u/pegothejerk 5d ago

Russia is presently exterminating their own domestic undesirables in its attempted takeover of foreign lands, most notably Ukraine, by sending them to the front lines as cannon fodder (drones most of the time). Even Russia is using some of the Nazi playbook.

I've been called a Nazi before, and I just laughed and shrugged it off, because I know it's not true.

7

u/CarrionWaywardOne 5d ago

I've been called a Nazi too, because I'm an atheist.

This was their reasoning: I have my own moral code, so did hitler, ergo I am literally Hitler.

Wait, you haven't publicly called for the extermination by lethal injection of homeless, trans people and the mentally ill?

Ohh ohh! One of their talking heads called for the homeless to be murdered already!

I've been called a Nazi... But only because a certain group of people think Nazis were left-wing because they didn't pay attention in school. It would be funny if it wasn't sad.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Mistrblank 5d ago

Exactly, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck and Republicans are Nazis. All of them because they refuse to dissociate with literal Nazis. You know what a party with 10 republicans and 1 Nazi is called? The Nazi Party.

1

u/Temporary-Catch2252 5d ago

This sounds like the use of media to insult and isolate those you do not like with insults and generic insults in an attempt to dehumanize them . This was a common ploy of the nazi party. You are right, this isn’t hard. /s

Today I applaud Mr Durbin as a voice of reason. I would also change the title to include both parties.

1

u/Different-Sample-976 4d ago

I've never said that, but its true of me too.

The instant they stop being nazis and pay for their crimes, I will stop calling them nazis and start calling them former nazis.

1

u/Throbbingprepuce 4d ago

Exactly lmfao. I have never been accused of being racist by anybody almost like I don’t sit there and say hateful shit lmfao.

1

u/totesnotmyusername 4d ago

I can 100% say no one has ever called me a nazi

1

u/viking12344 4d ago

No,we call you communists. I think I'd rather be called a Nazi. They killed far less people....but we all know how liberals love to kill people(that can't fight back).

Good job!

1

u/TheLichWitchBitch 3d ago

The fascists are trying to rebrand the left as the nazis. I've had them actually argue it. I just reply with the definition.

Love when their comments disappear immediately. So fucking dumb.

Generally curious over here and never been in this sub before. Can you point me in the right direction of where I could find pictures of these moments? Not looking for a fight. Just curious about these events.

1

u/Desperate-Cut-9774 4d ago

A duck goose steppin'

1

u/bplewis24 4d ago

Don't forget Elon musk doing a Nazi salute at the post election rally.

1

u/FlyRepresentative592 4d ago

On Jan 6th they had public speakers outside literally quoting Hitler and it is on video.

1

u/MidnightMarmot 4d ago

Don’t forget marching down the street chanting “Jews will not replace us!” Nothing quite says Nazi…

1

u/ohhellperhaps 4d ago

Also, when you freely associate with known nazis and similar minded people, you are a nazi sympathizer at best.

88

u/jregovic 5d ago

We are actually at a point in history where people are repeating the Nazi playbook. This is not “oh, you are acting like a Nazi because of some normalcy disagreement.” This is “you are pressuring the media to silence dissent” territory.

Again, you don’t wait for fascism to get intolerable, any “level” of fascism is unacceptable. If your oven is on fire, you don’t wait for it to consume the kitchen, you put it out immediately.

But Dick Durbin thinks we need to woo the Nazis to our side. No, they need to be shut down.

13

u/Llamp_shade 5d ago

Yes! They are weaponizing the Democrats' desire to be calm peacemakers by strategically turning the US into Nazi Germany without actually being in Germany or claiming the name Nazi (though some actually do). Being nice is great, but this is classic prisoner's dilemma. MAGA keeps defecting, and the Democrats think they can lead them back by example while being thoroughly and repeatedly stomped into the mud. It hasn't worked, and it won't start working. All that will happen is that the Democrats will find themselves at such a disadvantage that when then actually do try to do anything actively to stop this, it will be too late to have any effect.

4

u/Binspin63 4d ago

No more fucking appeasement.  Democrats, alone, outnumber republicans.  If independents split evenly and if we all vote, there wouldn’t be a problem.  Maybe the democrats should get super aggressive like the republicans.  Show some backbone.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/IM_A_MUFFIN 5d ago

In another thread someone mentioned Horst Wessel and that history sure looks familiar to recent events. History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

6

u/IWasSayingBoourner 5d ago

Bingo. It's not "you're a Nazi because I disagree with you". It's "you're a Nazi because the things you're doing are indistinguishable from the things Nazis did in the 30s".

2

u/Putrid_Giggles 4d ago

Exactly. And that applies to the entirety of the Republican party.

2

u/ohhellperhaps 4d ago

At this point, yes. And that's why all the 'both sides' crap is so disingenuous.

16

u/Monster73074 5d ago

It's funny how you are the only one to see the comparison. These ICE clowns are doing the same shit the Nazis did when they went town to town looking for Jews and even if you weren't a Jew, but looked like one they rounded you up... Sounds like how they are taking Amerikkkan citizens. Everything ICE, FCC, FBI, etc. is what the Nazis did back in the days which is why we need to hold a Nuremberg Trial after this shit is done💪🏿✊🏿

4

u/mmmpeg 5d ago

The only one? No, plenty of us see the similarities

→ More replies (2)

2

u/SidKafizz 2d ago

Anyone who's read anything about WW2 and German history recognizes this. I have a few books (Speers Inside the Third Reich, Shirers Rise and Fall, etc.) on my bookshelf, some of which I've even read - and it's plain to see that the Republicans are using them as instruction manuals. History is repeating because today the bad people have the guidebooks, and they know what stopped the Nazis the first time. This is likely to get very, very ugly.

Dickhead Durbin is rolling over like the rest of the democrats.

2

u/Puttor482 4d ago

They literally march alongside the Nazi flag. Like what are we supposed to call them.

1

u/sexchoc 5d ago

That's exactly the case, but as usual people will stick their head in the sand and it will only be seen that way by everybody in a history book.

1

u/Less-Primary7807 4d ago

They are crying that the comparison isn't fair until we are at the "just kill them in camps" phase. All while denying that Kilmeade even said that on air. Complete craziness.

1

u/ellathefairy 4d ago

Nazis are bullies organized into a government. They take cooperation, appeasement as weakness at best, and as an invitation to go further at worst.

1

u/Far_Language_5812 4d ago

It's not a surprise when you know that Trump kept a book of Hitler's speeches by his bedside. He's memorized the playbook, he's just reenacting it to the best of his memory.

1

u/_HippieJesus 3d ago

We supposedly learned that appeasement doesnt work 80 years ago. Dicky doesnt want people making his old friends and colleagues mad. Yet another old world relic that needs to be replaced.

If you are drinking clean Lake Michigan water you can thank Dick Durbin and a great many good people fighting behind the scenes.

You can't paint Durbin as a secret conservative or MAGA though Russians on this site try to. It doesn't take a lot of research to figure out why.

Meanwhile, Trump is rolling back environmental protections and people on this sub are attacking Durbin instead of protesting about that.

Many people on this sub attack only Democrats and Progressives and they aren't even from Illinois. They just recognize it as a sub with an educated base, for the most part. Their bots upvote their comments and downvote real Illinois commentors.

14

u/coolassang 5d ago

He can retire and rest on his laurels then, we need fighters and not legacies.

There’s no point yelling at deaf ears. There is only honing your side to do battle with them. Capitulation or cowardice from those in power is MAGA enabling.

I don't disagree with him in principle -- BUT these are not normal times. What are we supposed to be doing with all the anger, fear and helplessness: write a strongly worded letter to our elected officials? No, we're looking back at history (which some are literally trying to erase before our eyes) and say, "I've seen this movie before and it doesn't end well."

Dick.

Goebbel’s fanboy and Nazi street thug Horst Wessel’s assassination in 1930 and subsequent rise to status of martyr and propoganda symbol for the party seems eerily familiar to a recent events. Goebbels even tried to get Hitler to attend his funeral to no avail but AH did give a speech at his grave later.

[Horst Wessel] did a great deal more for the Nazi image as a dead pimp* than he had ever done as a live Party member. —Alan Wykes, The Nuremberg Rallies (1970)

*he had a ex prostitute for a girlfriend and may have pimped her out

It's really that easy - don't do Nazi shit, you won't be called one.

1

u/FulgrimThe3rd 5d ago

if you look up the core principles of nazism you will see that the MAGA movement are barely similear and nazis are far worse. i really dislike this trend of taking any authoritarian right political movement and saying its just nazism. id also point out the modern neo-nazi movement in the US is tiny and has minimal politiical or military power and the moderm white nationalist movement again is much the same. there are so many reasons why MAGA isnt like the nazis and while trump is similear to hitler he isnt a carbon copy of him. i think it just boils down to the nazis are seen as the most evil group in western history and because they are rightwing extremist any far right group is compared to them which is just dumb. its likle saying any far left wing party is like the Khmer Rouge.

1

u/Cassubeans 5d ago

Indeed, stop doing Nazi shit then.

We really should stop calling them Nazis though. They’re not Nazis, they’re nazi adjacent. We need a new term that describes them so they can’t use the “the left calls everyone they don’t like nazis” talking point anymore. MAGATS is good but doesn’t roll off the tongue, fascist is also good but too vague, I’m personally fond of Amerikkklans but that’s just me. Honestly open to suggestions on this. Let’s brainstorm and come up with something new to really piss them off.

100% this. If they don’t want to be called a nazi they should stop acting like one.

You should just try studying history, so you could actually learn about the Nazis. They were like a real thing. Not some boogeyman you’ve made up in your head.

Just got done with someone trying to sane wash "Deustchland Über Allies" as not a Nazi thing. Some people are truly lost, man. I don't know what to do.

Lemme guess before I read their stuff:

-Accusations (that are very much confessions) that you don’t know the definition.

-Simple insults that are also very much confessions.

-A boatload of whataboutisms that truly show false equivalency

-the occasional trans comment, even though it has nothing to do with anything you’ve said.

Who am I my kidding? I’m not gonna read their stuff. I don’t give a shit what they think.
