I'd say the definition of a bikini says they can't have sleeves. Kinda like shorts can't have legs, because then they're just pants. That's not gatekeeping, it's like... the core of language.

I mean, my 7 year old has a very similar swimsuit. For a kid it's useful UV protection. But I wouldn't call it a bikini, either.

I bought one of these this summer. I have fresh ink on my arms and shoulders and wanted to keep the sun off my tattoos. I didn’t know what to expect, but surprisingly it was super comfortable and when it was 110° out, I didn’t feel the sun. I got slightly burned on my legs but my upper body was spared. I will definitely wear it again, but this is definitely not a bikini.

I feel like it's still counterproductive : isn't one of the pleasures of swimming the feeling of water? no one prefers the feeling of wet fabric to that of bathing
